Sorry for not including "cut." That was unprofessional of me. Besides, cut will be the least used out of all three. Unless you're doing some serious editing on notepad or mail cut doesn't have much to do with it... however maybe we'll be able to edit Office/iWork documents in the future.

Cut could also be a way to bulk delete a bunch of text without just holding down the delete key in the keyboard for a while. That's actually the only way I've used cut so far haha.

How often do you use copy/paste on your computers? That might be some indication of whether you see the need for it. I use copy/paste 100 times a day on my computer when using it heavily.

This is actually mostly irrelevant, IMO. As a content editor for a website, I copy and paste text all day every day. I've never kept track, but I do know that Quicksilver holds my last 60 items copied and I'm never able to go back more than about an hour or so and still find stuff there.

The fact is, I use my computer as a workstation and my iPhone is a supplement to my daily life. There are a few times copy and paste is useful on the iPhone yes, but it's rare that I absolutely need it in order to do something or I simply can't.

Yes there are users that will use their iPhone for business purposes and will have a higher need for it, but how much you use it is far from being proportionate to how much you use it on your computer. The iPhone is simply not meant to be a desktop replacement.

And I'll use copy & paste a lot more than I'll use Spotlight. Copy & paste is a welcome addition to the iPhone feature set for me. I use it often on my computer, and I need it a lot on my iPhone.

It just depends on your individual needs.

Spotlight is kind of cool... say you want to hear a song.. just type the name of the song and it pulls it up click it and it goes to ipod and plays it... Well at least I thought it was cool...

I have been quite frustrated many times by not being able to copy/paste on the iPhone. Don't you ever need to copy partial text from an email to send to someone else? Delete large portions of an email? Copy some text from a web page to put in an email, text message, or note? Copy that darn code from the text messages that we get when someone sends us an email and paste it into the web page field? Tried to write a long message or blog without wanting to change the order of what you've typed (by copy and pasting into a different part of the text? Copy a web link into a twitter update?

If you've never needed to do that stuff, I can certainly see why you don't need cut/paste. :)
+1

Coming from another smartphone, I was so used to having cut/copy/paste that I felt hampered, and I still do. I am thrilled that it's finally coming, so I won't have to delay certain activities until I'm with my iBook.

Cut/Copy/Paste and Universal Search (Spotlight) were my two biggies, and from my perspective, I don't think they can by overhyped. Yes, I happily gave up my Treo and don't regret it, but having used those features regularly for 10 years, it was a constant "D'oh! Can't do that."

I think it's cool, too. I just don't use a Mac very often, so I don't get to use it much. But I can see it being pretty handy on the iPhone.

I don't think it's over-hyped at all. In fact, considering how innovate this CCP solution is, I think it's under-hyped. Apple said they were going to take their time and do it right, and from what I've seen this is exactly what they did.

i would much rather have an easy way to switch email accounts rather than cut and paste. how they missed this one is beyond me. how there isnt a huge uproar over this is beyond me... am i off base here?

I absolutely agree. I love my iPhone and can't wait for all the new features in 3.0. But I still wish they improved the email part. I use emails a lot, 2 personal accounts and one work (exchange) account. When I'm reading an email I hate to have to tap tap tap to go back to the email accounts and then tap tap tap back in to read an email in another account. I wish they'd make this easier 'cause I used emails so much through out the day. I know Blackberry is best with emails, but I just like the iphone to much so I guess I have to live with it for now.

It's not hyped enough. Already on the net, the iPhone haters are demising it as if its just your everyday generic cut, copy and paste feature that already existed. Watch the video and its not. Lots of thought from Eng. and intelligence were put in for this feature.
Why does everyone say the 3.0 implementation of cut, copy, paste is intelligent and such? I honeslty don't know. Would someone explain to me what makes it so different than other implementations of cut, copy, paste.

Copy/paste is something that was overhyped by the iPhone detractors. Just like MMS has been. So apple are really just using the hype these people created to their advantage. How many new features do RIM roll out in their OS to existing customers for free? Its putting a new breath of life into my iPhone (1,1 so no 3G for me) and whenever I end up having the justifiable funds to get a new Phone (probably 12 - 14 months from now) it would be an iPhone because of how I know the platform seems to have longevity.

However, since getting 3.0, I am really impressed by how it works, but the feature which brings me closer to my Apple pc experience has to be Spotlight. My MacBook is really minimalistic, I only have 4 Apps in the dock, nothing on the desktop and my default way of launching apps and finding things is Spotlight.

I feel like this was Apple's way of showing the competition how things should be done in the future, I also feel like the doubts I had about upgrading to an iPhone 3G or the next generation have been dispelled by how they have addressed these overhyped issues. Even though I don't use MMS (my older phones supported it but never ever seemed to work properly) and I only felt that I missed copy/paste about 5 times since getting my iPhone last year, the features in devices like the Palm Pre, and especially the Open Source philosophy in the Android platform were making me seriously consider making my next phone one of those two. Since the announcement and using it a little, I feel like I will stay loyal.

That's where copy/paste is succeeding. Its making some Blackberry users think 'wait a minute, Apple seem to be listening to their users', its helping Apple keep their existing userbase and its only going to help attract people who are used to Nokias/Sony Ericssons/Samsungs because of the mix of rich functionality with a real ease of use, and also the fact that with a firmware update, you basically get a phone upgrade. So yeah, of course its overhyped, but every iPhone hater's first argument is 'no copy and paste, the iPhone is nothing compared to my BlackBerry blah blah blah..'

Wow, some people just love a moan! A lot of forum members requested time and time again for cut/copy/paste, and finally it's happening. I for one am glad, and yes I know it's a standard feature for other phones, but us iPhone users had to wait.

Just be happy that for once Apple may actually be listening to it's customers, because we all know it doesn't happen very often...

I dont think so. I really have no use for it. I might use it here and there but if i never had it, i wouldnt miss it.

In a business Cut and Paste is needed badly. This was one of our major complaints about the iphone and no invites in the calendar which both were fixed.

I know this is off topic from the thread, but just thought I'd add this- that's one of the things I love about spotlight on the iPhone now, and I'll use it quite a bit for sure. Not to be a complainer, but I wish that when it loaded up the song it just loaded it as if that was the first song you were playing and then after it goes off, it'll move on to another song in your library and keep going. As it stands, it loads only the single song in the iPod app and when it's done, you have to manually go pick something else to play

3.0 as a whole is over-hyped. Ive been using it for 24hrs and i am like, Ive been doing this on my old phone. Still good to have though.

Quite possibly because it is a Beta and most of the features are dormant at the moment maybe?

Not only that, but 3.0 has massive amounts of updates for developers that will be wonderful for the user. But won't be seen until those apps start coming out, and when current apps can take advantage.

It might be overhyped, but given the sophistication of the device, it was absurd not to have it in the first place. I think it'll be one of those things where you don't see what the big deal is until you have it, then you won't be able to imagine life without it, kinda like the iPhone itself ;)

Cut, copy, paste should have been there from the beginning. The failure to bring MMS to the iPhone on launch day was controversial, but clicking a link to see a silly meme can't be that hard. I'm surprised you guys haven't gotten video yet frankly... even in the 3.0 update. I'd be up in arms about backgrounding or the lack thereof if I were an iPhone user, and its surprising that you're just now getting things like IM-push. Its been a long wait for you guys.

It's not "hyped" at all. It's something you won't need the majority of the time, but when you DO need it it's a major pain if you don't have it. Rather like a First Aid Kit. :p

I'm thrilled Apple have (finally) added it, and added it using intuitive gestures.

I've lost track of how many times I've been emailed a password/booking reference and need to enter it in a webpage, but couldn't copy and paste nor could I "Cmd-Tab" back and forth between web page and mail app. EXTREMELY frustrating.

I'm really tired of seeing people post stuff like this over and over. Yes, we all know you've been doing some of this stuff all along on your 8-year-old cell phone. Who cares? The point is that now the iPhone is finally getting updated to allow for it and that's great news because now not only does it have the basic features that older phones have, but it makes it completely surpass those in terms of functionality everywhere else. I'd like to see those ancient cellphones allow average people to write apps and let me have games to play

I agree with you. It's just a matter of that old Apple fanboy sense of entitlement. "I should get everything, and even when I do I'll still bitch about it." It's funny how people expect significant software updates like this, and yet if you bought any other cellphone at most you would be getting bugfixes and at least you would be getting nothing at all.

Hey, thats how I felt. Not everyone is going to have the same reaction.

Can you test what happens when pressing the backspace key while a block of text is highlighted?
