Hi guys. From what I understand is, Core i5 is the new brand of Intel processors for Notebooks, and Core i7 is the new brand of Intel processors for Desktops. Correct me if I am wrong.

I am in the market for a new Notebook as I sold my MacBook Pro to my mother. I don't need it right away, and I heard about the Core i5 coming out, and Windows 7 will be coming out too, so I might just wait for both. What advantages will Core i5 have over Core 2 Duo? How much faster will it be? Thanks! :D

Core i5 will have bigger advantages over Core 2 Duo since Core i5 (or i3 | i7) don't have the outdated FSB (Front Side Bus) bottlenecking everything.

This means the CPU connects directly to the RAM modules and latency decreases since the information/data doesn't have to go thru an unneeded step as the Memory controller.

Also the new i5 CPUs will bring in Hyper Threading meaning each core can deal with 2 threads vs the 1 core 1 thread approach of Core 2 Duos.

Okay, thank you. How much of an advantage will it have over everyday computing? Not much probably?

I am thinking of picking up a Dell or Toshiba right now but I think I can hold my cravings for a new laptop. :D

Core i5 also encompasses Clarkdale (2/4 threads, Turbo Clock) and Lynnfield (4/4 threads, Turbo Clock) on Socket LGA 1156.

This is going to be fun.

The front side bus isn't a bottleneck on a notebook. Still it does take the chipset off of the board to lower the BOM for a logicboard if you're going to use the IGP.

You sold your MBP to your mother? I would give it to her, not charge your own mother. She raised you from age 0 to age 18!

That rant aside, Core i5 or whatever the codename might be, will have advantages to the current Core 2 Duo series. But if the old MBP worked for you, there's no reason to wait for things you don't need/use.

I paid for it on my own and her TiBook broke and she said she didn't have enough money for a new one and she would be willing to buy it off of me if I wanted to. I sold it to her for a great price, so it's not like I stiffed my own mother.

Not sure. On the Intel website and Wikipedia it just says it is available to the market in September, whether manufacturers pick it up right when it is released or not all depends on the manufacturer.

Lynnfield and Clarkfield are scheduled for September.

Arrandale should be in before the end of the year and Clarkdale is Q1 2010.
