My Q6600 was stupidly fast coming from a Core 2 Duo. The Core i5 750 is even faster than that.In the infamous words of Monty Burns... "Excellent".
I won't lie, my i7 system's top purpose is gaming and some basic AV work. Eyefinity is nothing more than a nice luxury, but it is a luxury that's definitely nice. My only "issue" right now is that my 3x 24" monitors aren't all of the same make, so it's a little awkward with the bezels. Not too bad though. I'm hoping next year to maybe see if the price will come down on the Dell U2410 so I can pick up three of them (and sell my current monitors).
The same thing happened with the 4770. On launch the prices were low but afterward the demand dragged prices up. A lot of vendors had to compensate with price drops on the HD 4850.I'm just glad that I was able to pick up a 5850 though. With TSMC's yield problems, both 5850s and 5870s have become very hard to find, and AMD even recently semi-officially raised the price of the 5850. Thankfully I bought mine not long after they were introduced, so was spared the now-long wait and price increases.
Shipping to the Midwest and delivered by the 13th? Wow. Did you have an expedited form of shipping? I'm in San Diego, closer to Shanghai, yet my delivery date is the 16th (Apple says the 17th). The computer left China today, the 11th, with the following shipping type:
Service type
International Economy Distribution - Indirect Signature Required
now i've got my eye on these things! looking forward to hearing from the first ones that get em. i'm eying one maybe for xmas!
If this follows other items from China the product goes to Anchorage, AK to clear customs then heads to Memphis for distribution. So being closer to China doesn't help.
ASUS had a demo board with USB 3.0 at Computex 2009. SATA 6 Gbps was only delayed on P55 because Marvell had IDE compatibility issues. Compound that with Intel releasing the news that they wouldn't support USB 3.0 until 2011 on their chipsets only provided an additional boost to the Light Peak bandwagon.
Damage control had to be done because a lot of people started to believe that USB 3.0 had been completely abandoned. USB 3.0 is coming out in 2009. I never said the components were shipping today.
Benchmark prediction:
Safari feels snappier.

I cant wait until 1030am on the 13th. Thats when fedex and apple say my new beast will be here. I still operate on a borrowed G4 powerbook 15" and now I get to upgrade to a lightning fast i7 with 2TB and 8GB. The ball on my mighty mouse just broke for the thousandth time so I cant wait to try out this mighty mouse either.
I dont know how I am going to get anything else done from now until then?
Oh, I upgraded from a Q6600 to the i7 920. You're right, it was an amazingly fast processor. Overclocked it's still fairly competitive too. I simply wanted to rebuild to a mATX system, and I was looking at buying quite a few new components to do it, so went to the i7 920 (almost went with a i7 860, but I'm semi-tempted to eventually to replace the 920 with a Gulftown depending on how the prices are).My Q6600 was stupidly fast coming from a Core 2 Duo. The Core i5 750 is even faster than that.
Every time I mention buying a new monitor my friend asks if they can buy mine so they can have matching triplets. I'd love to get a pair of U2410s but prices are still out of my budgeting for computer hardware. I look at Samsung's PVA displays but I keep crawling back to Dell and 1920 x 1200 kills off any 1080p choices.
The G2410 with the LED backlights gets some good marks on the rendering of blacks and its low power consumption even while being a lowly TN panel.
A 5830 would be very useful right now. I've heard that it could be introduced around January. Not sure of the validity of that though. The same thing happened with the 4770. On launch the prices were low but afterward the demand dragged prices up. A lot of vendors had to compensate with price drops on the HD 4850.
This time there's no sibling card to take the pressure off and the 5770 has some promise but is riding solely on DirectX 11 versus performance over the pervious generation. I'm hoping for a 5830 to fill the gap between the 5770 and 5850. 1120 to 1280 shaders binned off of the 58xx line. I don't think there's much more you can squeeze out of the 800 Shader Juniper XT and perhaps a 256-bit memory interface.

Not quite. PCs with USB ports pre-dated the original iMac. What Apple did, that was "revolutionary" for the time, was that they dropped support for all legacy ports. They only supported USB (and ultimately Firewire also). That's fine, but to imply that Apple is simply ignoring USB 3.0 while other vendors are embracing it is disingenuous. That it will be shipping in DIY mobos "soon" is different than seeing it show up in Dell and HP machines. Or are Dell and HP ignoring USB 3.0 too simply because they aren't shipping yet?
Don't forget it was Apple, with the original iMac, that really got the USB ball rolling while PC vendors were still clinging to parallel ports (ugh) and PS/2 (ugh) connectors (in fact, I still see PS/2 connectors on current PCs - ugh).
Apple is rarely given credit for pushing USB into the consumer mindset.
(That said, I assume we will see USB 3.0 in Dells and HPs before we see it in Macs.)
Just remember I didn't say that Apple was going to skip it.That's fine, but to imply that Apple is simply ignoring USB 3.0 while other vendors are embracing it is disingenuous. That it will be shipping in DIY mobos "soon" is different than seeing it show up in Dell and HP machines. Or are Dell and HP ignoring USB 3.0 too simply because they aren't shipping yet?
Well the do it yourself crowd should see it this or next month. OEMs should be shipping soon. USB 3.0 just isn't dead like some people have started to believe.(That said, I assume we will see USB 3.0 in Dells and HPs before we see it in Macs.)
