Oh, I was very much happy to see Apple offering a Lynnfield-based iMac. Now if only they'd provide better GPU upgrade options :p.
I think this is the first time since the iMac G5 2.0 GHz ALS where it was a hard decision between the all-in-one and the Mac Pro (Power Mac G5) for overall performance.

Sadly not a lot of people play it anymore, but I happened to find a server that features stock maps and tends to be fairly consistently played by a large group. There used to be a Something Awful "Goonsquad" server that was fairly popular, but it hasn't been around for awhile :(
Maybe we can join up on Steam for some other games. PM me because my crew can always use an extra player.

Yeah, I'm definitely concerned for what's ultimately going to happen with GT300. The amusing thing is, the nVidia fanboys constantly talk about how once GT300 does come out, it'll be so much faster than the Radeon 5870. The only problem with that argument is that while nVidia continues to work on GT300 to get it released, AMD continues to work on R800 revisions (as well as their next-generation GPU), so nVidia will release GT300 only to then see AMD release a revised R800 that either competes on-par performance wise, or provides slightly lower performance but at a much lower cost (such as with the 48** series).
I suspect a 5890, minor revision is in the future for ATI. I'm sure that AMD is happy about this settlement.

The CEO of nVidia reminds me of what you'd get if you combined Steve Balmer with Steve Jobs: a persuasive CEO that seems to be able to get fans and investors to buy into everything he's doing (the Jobs comparison), while also acting completely crazy and going off the hinge during company/shareholder meetings (the Balmer aspect), lol.
That's a rather accurate depiction of Jen-Hsun Huang.

And good ol' Charlie. Some of his stuff is good, but you have to be careful, since he's definitely very much anti-nVidia, lol (just as FUD is often anti-AMD/ATI).
Charlie does cross the line fairly often in his "journalism." The scary thing is that he's been right about nVidia lately. 1.7%, wood screws, and all.

Day of Defeat. Greatest game OF ALL TIME!!!11onw

Dunno why you look for the stock maps, there are many customs which are almost as good graphically and superior in gameplay. The trick is finding one that doesn't have a crappy download speed.

Call of Duty World at War tried and failed at being a competent World War 2 FPS. There is no balance at all to the guns, once you unlock the Stg there is no reason to use anything else. Load up on Betties which will kill for you after you die, use martyrdom which will drop a grenade even when you die to make up for the fact that you weren't fast enough when you were alive.

Pity then that DoD's graphics look a bit plain in comparison and I miss the ironsights in CoD that you actually use instead of firing from the hip all the time.
That's probably part of the problem, in that my past experiences with servers running custom maps, was that the download times for the content were horrendous, and so I'd get tired of waiting. Most of the popular servers that still remain though seem to be much better overall, so I may try get back into playing on some of the custom maps.

I was never really able to get into CoD:World at War, to be honest. My interest in WWII FPS games sorta peaked with DoD:S (I've mainly always preferred multiplayer to single player for WWII FPSes). One of my all-time favorite multiplayer games is still Return to Castle Wolfenstein (which I had for both Windows and OS X). Fun times :D

Yeah, and the i5/i7 860 iMac is quite a good deal too, considering you get such a high-performance system with a S-IPS 27" screen for less than what the entry-model Mac Pro costs (although do you find it amusing also that Apple charges $200 for the i7 860 upgrade from the i5, when the actual volume cost difference is more like, $80? lol)

Will do. I'm usually on for awhile on Saturdays and occasionally Sundays.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking too. Hemlock within a few weeks, and the 5890 in late December/early January.

That's a rather accurate depiction of Jen-Hsun Huang.
Yeah, did you see his quote recently referring to how his household is entirely Apple products? I'm glad to see he's praising Apple, but quite a bit of amusing commentary was made in the enthusiast community over the fact that the CEO of one of the world's largest GPU makers (and a guy who has considered himself a pretty intense gamer in the past) runs systems that often don't have much graphical horsepower, lol.

Charlie does cross the line fairly often in his "journalism." The scary thing is that he's been right about nVidia lately. 1.7%, wood screws, and all.
Oh yeah, I loved the wood screws report during FERMI's initial announcement and when Huang was shown on stage holding "FERMI", lol.

It came, it came!

It is Friday and the i7 was delivered this morning 4 days early to Bishop, CA. . It is big. I am setting it up now. Will report more later. Yippee.

i7? Where are you?

Hey. I ordered an i7 with base everything on Oct 30. Anybody else order around then and have gotten a shipping notification? I've got nothing yet. Still stays shipping November.

Hey. I ordered an i7 with base everything on Oct 30. Anybody else order around then and have gotten a shipping notification? I've got nothing yet. Still stays shipping November.

I ordered my i7 with 8MB of ram and the new remote on the release day but still hear nothing from apple!!!

The Geekbench score for me is 8273. i7 with 4GB memory.

I was trying to migrate from another iMac using a wireless router method. The migration stalled after 9 hrs with 4 minutes to go. It looks like the applications made it but the internet login did not, nor the bookmarks, nor anything in the Address-book.

Great looking computer somewhat intimating size. The mouse is different and will like that after using it for a while. I did not like the keyboard so using Matais tactilepro 2.0.

i7 Coming Soon

Hey. I ordered an i7 with base everything on Oct 30. Anybody else order around then and have gotten a shipping notification? I've got nothing yet. Still stays shipping November.

Checked this morning and my i7 (ordered on Oct 30) is now "Prepared for Shipping" so coming soon! Next week will be a good week!

It's arrived!!!

Well my i7 iMac has finally arrived (ordered on Oct 20th) & I have to say after playing with it for a couple of hours the first impressions are VERY good.
The display is stunning & it's very quiet too. I was worried about noise with the bigger quad desktop processor, but I needn't have been as its just as quiet as my wife's old 24" 3Ghz (whisper). Very important to me as its kept in the living room so any noises would have been annoying.
I really like the new mouse too. I haven't been a fan of Apples earlier efforts at input devices, but the magic mouse seems a big improvement - well done Apple.
So far my only criticism is with such a high resolution screen text is small & can be little difficult to read, so you'll need 20/20 vision to see. I've made good use of magnification & have already increased my font size in my web browsers.
Despite this though it's quite excellent! :)

Under the deal, AMD will withdraw its antitrust complaints against Intel in Europe, the U.S., Japan and South Korea. But the European Union has already issued a ruling that ordered Intel to pay a $1.45 billion fine for "anticompetitive behavior." And in the U.S., there is speculation that the Federal Trade Commission may be close to filing their own case against Intel.

Meanwhile, though Intel still controls about 80% of the microprocessor market, its competitor AMD will get a welcome boost from the settlement money - and from the "oversight provisions that will make it difficult for Intel to violate," according to AMD exec Thomas McCoy.
