Seriously. Take 3 minutes and watch this video and tell me that you or your family will have no use for an iPad. I was somewhat skeptical with all the 'revolutionary' hyperbole from Apple, but wow!! All for $500.00. It's a no-brainer. And yes, I realize that the vid is not an actual iPad, but you'll get the idea ...

Freaking awesome.

Content such as this would have been great for the iPad demo - devs and publishers will be bringing it to life, in no time.

This is only the beginning, and at $500, I'll take one now.

Apple's need for secrecy destroyed this launch. The platform is all about the software and they showed very little of it. The possibilities really are endless and I expect the iphone os 4.0 launch will show much more as developers will have had time to play around with this.

I'm more disappoint it isn't a stand-alone computer, but a glorified ipod touch

I totally agree.

The hype reached a fever pitch without a peep from Apple. People had unrealistic visions of some new, futuristic OS (Courier-style perhaps, but why fix what isn't broken?) and hardware capable of everything (it will have wacom pressure sensitivity, the ability to switch between e-ink and a 1080p display, a foldable OLED screen, and cost $300!!).

Apple's strategy, I think, is extremely sound and it will be a successful product. But it fell far short of what people were expecting. This was only exacerbated by the poor presentation on Wednesday. It already has it's foundation in the iPhone, and it doesn't help when you demos mirror those used during the introduction of that device. There was no need to spend so much time on Safari and Google Maps when they function almost identically to the company's most successful products. The iWork demo was a step in the right direction though.

They needed to show how this expands on those other devices. They should have developed more custom software (iLife was a huge missed opportunity). More time should also have been given to a greater variety of 3rd party developers. As well as more time given to develop for it. Focusing on games was a poor move. Brushes was the highlight during this part of the presentation. They definitely needed more developers like that - creating fresh and innovative uses for the enormous touch screen.

Lets face it, the iPad's size coupled with the multi touch display is it's biggest selling point. We needed to see better and more examples of how the apps will take advantage of that fact.

Camera?

I am beginning to wonder if apple may just squeeze in a camera by the time it comes out?

That is the only thing holding me back right now.

Why, so we can get pictures up your nose? that's why it doesn't have a camera... pretty simple actually.

100% trolling.. I've checked your posts, you are just here to stir.. stir.. stir. Grow up.

How is my opinion Trolling ?

Your being silly

If my opinion can stir a reaction out of you so Deep that you feel you need to check all my past posts, than it must be a valid opinion.

Calling me a "Troll" is lame .

Really, I'm Just Here to have FUN !

Apple's need for secrecy destroyed this launch.

Nope - it made it.

Without all that secrecy the buzz would have been pre-iphone sized. Techies only.

On friday night primetime there was a huge piece on "can the tablet survive the hype".

And who was hying it? Everyone but apple.

I'm more disappoint it isn't a stand-alone computer, but a glorified ipod touch

it IS a stand alone computer for what 90% of people use 90% of the worlds computers for out of work hours.

email
web browsing
listening to music
writing letters
home finance spreadsheets
looking at pictures
light picture editing.
playing games

That is what ordinary people use computers for.
That is what the iPad is designed to do WELL.

In fact if it wasn't for the current lack of camera for skype - i can't think of a single thing my mother will use her macbook for that an iPad wouldn't do well if not better

If you have a laptop this isn't really aimed at you.

Why, so we can get pictures up your nose? that's why it doesn't have a camera... pretty simple actually.

I think that is wrong. Did you see the case/stand at the end of the presentation?

The camera will come soon.
Then it shall be mine! Mwa ha ha!

PS, what do people who don't like the iPad think of the Modbook?

The Modbook is essentially a MacBook (or MacBook Pro) and the specs depend on the level of the Apple hardware they use.

.. the Modbook is an Apple-approved endeavor in which Axiotron purchases a MacBook (or MacBook Pro) and converts it into a tablet by adding a Wacom Pen Screen (with 512 levels of pressure sensitivity). They also offer a process by which you can send in your Macbook (or MacBook Pro) and have them convert it for you at a discounted rate.

The newest Modbook can be souped up with a 2.13 GHz processor, 512MB to 4GB of RAM, and a 60GB to 250GB hard drive starting at $1,649. With the Modbook, you’ll get all of the usual ports and connections, plus an iSight webcam (something the iPad can only dream of--for now).

But if apple had launched that - What do you think the sales would be?

50%?
20%?
10%?

Agree absolutely. Jonathan Ive must have farmed this task out to a subordinate, who promptly failed. Expect that outer bezel to be cleaned up in the shipping version. Yuck. :apple:

"Cleaned up" how? Painted silver or something?

All of the other similar "slates" have similar bezels... Would you rather your thumbs be on the screen?

So is adding a plastic strip, machining a different aluminum back panel, and adding a 3G radio chip worth $100++?

Good way to tell the status of the user. Identify the really big spenders. It's like wearing a badge of honor. I'm a 3G type of guy and you're not. Why, you got a problem with that? You want to know why the 3G chip is worth $100 more, then look at this breakdown:confused:: http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/news/0BBAEEDDA8AC728DCC2576BB00744BEE?

That extra $100 is what they call raking in the profit and anyone that runs a good business can figure out that much that it's not pure component cost. :D

I'm more disappoint it isn't a stand-alone computer, but a glorified ipod touch

Of course, you're disappointed. I can tell you're one of hordes that wants full Windows 7 with Microsoft Office running in the background on an Atom-powered HP Slate and getting two hours of battery life in an enclosure of the same size as the iPad. Dream on. Your dream device would be a stinky pile of failure just as every past Windows tablet has been. :p

Then again, maybe your dream tablet is running Android and selling for $250 from the company that makes the JooJoo. Yeah, I'm sure he'll promise JooJoo customers a camera, two USB ports, 12-hour battery life, 100,000 apps and life-time product support. I'm fairly certain that "CEO" that's pushing the JooJoo has no backing or cash or any support whatsoever. I'll bet there is only one or two JooJoo concept devices and the "CEO" couldn't ante up two cents to buy a production run of components. People like this are all talk and couldn't deliver a real product to the masses. You think any U.S. publishing company would be stupid enough cut a deal with JooJoo's "CEO". Hell..., no.

Apple has way more than what it takes as a company to sell the iPad (glorified iPod Touch) even if consumers don't want it now. In two months consumers are going to be begging to have it even if they have to max-out their credit cards again. You wait and see.
