I noticed it and had at first assumed it was a service manual or similar. But the story does say it was purchased with an iPad...so maybe?

It looks like the size/shape of the iPad, but the material and Apple logo are perplexing. The material seems to be paper. The kind you would find covering a notebook. And the Apple logo appears to be glossy and black. If anything, I'm guessing it's a custom cover, not something Apple did. It doesn't fit Apple's branding.

Anybody else notice that the screws from the bottom seem to be relocated under the SIM tray? (at least one of them)

I absolutely HATE the new design. It is a step backward in my opinion. Going from sleek to square is ugly. But will I get the new iPhone no matter what yes. I just reallly really wish that that is not the case

I'm not saying the phone's features and hardware specs will be completely different, but more-so the look of the phone. A lot of people, including myself, are disappointed that the screen is smaller than on previous iPhones. I don't mind the case design, but a lot of people don't like that either.

So perhaps Apple just made a different case/design for the phone? I don't think that would cost tens of millions of dollars.

The internal components of this phone were not made for a different case, however. They were very clearly designed with very close tolerances for this case. Redesigning those internal components for a different case is what would be prohibitively expensive (and time-consuming). As for screen size, there is no way that could be changed without a complete redesign, either. There is no room in this design for a larger screen. Doing either of the things you suggest would indeed cost tens of millions of dollars. Sorry, but we are not likely to see anything beyond minor changes like the placement of screws we see in this second prototype.

I just have a hard time believing that Apple lost/had stolen 3 prototype iPhones. One was on flicker, then gizmodo, then this Vietnam incident. So i think apple may have done 1 leak on purpose. But losing 3 prototypes? What happened to Apple's security.

That would be a prohibitively expensive ploy just to give Steve a "gotcha" moment at WWDC. It would cost tens of millions of dollars to design and produce a second fully-functioning successor iPhone, tens of millions which Apple would have no hope of recovering. Apple is a publicly-traded company with a fiduciary responsibility to its shareholders. It just couldn't justify such an expense.

None of the iPhones leaked to date have been shown as "fully-functioning". The Vietnamese phone was stuck on the one screen, and the Gizmodo phone was remotely locked. iTunes did recognize them as iPhones but that wouldn't cost tens of millions....

All we know about the TwitPic phone is that we have photos. That doesn't mean it ever left an Apple facility.

I dont think they purposely went after gizmodos editor and kicked in his door for fun :D

That doesnt mean anything.
The amount of R&D and money put into creating that iphone is not anything to joke with. Just wait a month or so and you'll see.

Nearly all Apple products are leaked prior to release. Its a kind of sport. And now that Mr Burns has called in the lawyers the leaks are moving off shore.

It's funny, except for the Gizmodo editor who will pay the price for being an idiot. Most people would agree that being an idiot is price enough to pay.

A different phone to be released, doubt it, however the shape of the new phone might make is suitable for new docking strategies (iMac slot) or inductive charging (aka wireless charging).
