They’re just going to call it “New Siri” or “Siri 2.” Little chance they’re going to give up a decade’s worth of branding when they can fix most of the public perception issues (which are more pronounced in the tech community than in the general public) with some re-launch marketing and demos.

I think they do need to rebrand and go in a different direction. Siri is forever tarnished.

I've never expected much from Siri and it always works for the simple things I ask of it.

why so visceral toward an inanimate object? once apple fix it UI and change some of it management and stop listing to the moronic VP's, the software will get better.

Double-edged sword. There's too much invested in the name Siri to change it, but it's so tarnished in the public's eyes that I see little likelihood that people give it a second chance.

In my experience, I find Siri to be 99% useless. It's inaccurate, rarely understands anything you ask it, and more often than not just wants to send you to a web page for answers when it does.

There's little chance I ever take it seriously in the future, no matter what they say they've done with it.

Yep...Siri is disabled on all my devices. Nothing personal, but, between voices I do not like and a high fail rate, I gave up.

Changing the name alone isn’t enough if the performance doesn’t match expectations. I used a simple prompt to compare how Gemini, Bing, and ChatGPT responded. Below, you’ll see the best of four results generated by Bing. Gemini completely misunderstood the prompt, and ChatGPT took over five minutes to produce a result. Apple’s Image Playground even asked me to change my description and try again.

“Create an image of an orange tabby cat driving a red car with an open sunroof. Beside it, a black-striped mackerel tabby cat sits in the passenger seat. The car is in motion, driving along a scenic country road.”

Even tho Siri functionality sucks and is a joke the name is ok.

I’d be ok if they would just make it work.

If they do rebrand it it should work flawlessly else don’t rename it.

And if it works flawlessly, then why rebrand it? Word will get around quick enough and folks won’t be forced to learn a new trigger phrase.

Apple should be mindful of the lesson learned in Britain when its National Spastics Society in 1994 changed its name to Scope. Charity leaders made the change because "spastic" had become a term of derision, a playground insult and worse, and the charity didn't want to be associated with (and even to foster) such negativity because of a name.

So, what happened? Very quickly the same British schookids who had taunted their peers as "spastics" began to taunt them instead as "scopers."

Even if Apple gives Siri a new name, the old reputation will quickly be assigned to the new name unless the new product is so dramatically improved that people will recognize the vast difference. The smart move would be to make Siri so much better than before that it will actually change the name's reputation. A mere name change without a dramatic improvement in functionality is likely to just make things worse.

They should call the new voice assistant 'Gurman'

Usage:
'Hey Gurman, what's the weather today?'

'It might rain, or it might be sunny. But if you wait, I'll probably issue a correction by lunchtime saying it'll snow, before confirming it's actually just cloudy.'

'Thank you – the only thing more predictable than Siri's errors is the ever-shifting Gurman forecast. Fitting name for the new AI'

'Sorry, would you like me to search that on the web?'

🤦‍♂️

Looks like ChatGPT gave you the best results. I wonder if the placement of the steering wheel has to do with the location of the person asking the question? If asked in America, is the car image a left hand drive, if in England would it be right hand drive?

Apple is in the worst place they’ve been in over 20 years. The completely failed WWDC last year should have had them ready to make real progress this year. And a design change of IOS ain’t it. I’m known here as an Apple Fanboy. But this past year has tarnished Apple in my eyes, and it seems there’s nothing coming today to right the ship.

Call it "Dan" - outta respect for Alan Partridge. If Apple continues along its current trajectory of AI misfires, then history will repeat.

Not immediately definitely. Maybe many years later when Apple Intelligence is working well, Apple might consider such a move.

I remember before Siri launched it was rumored to be called “Apple Assistant” or “Assistant”. I wouldn’t mind that name. Or simply, “Hey, Apple. . . ”
