Houston (duh)
I'm getting this often now... not sure why it is all of the sudden starting.

My wife's 1st gen iPhone doesn't have this problem btw.

Often, my phone will look like this
(full bars but no "E" or 3G sign)

And then if you try and use data such as Safari - it will get this message:

Turning the phone off and on will fix it sometimes, but not every time.

Is this a common "bug" now? Any solutions?

I actually had this problem on my 2g iPhone. I think did a reset network settings and a full reboot holding home and sleep/wake buttons to fix it.

I'm right there with ya. I tried resetting the phone, and when it started up, I got the "E" symbol next to my full bars, but it still doesn't seem to be receiving any data (e.g. - can't connect to my email servers, safari won't work, etc.)

Hopefully it's coming from AT&T tinkering with the towers?

Happening again...

I know this is an older thread, but I just thought I'd bump this to the top because both my iPhone and my boss' iPhone say they cannot activate the cellular network this morning. And according to her, this has been going on since later last night. I've tried the Reset Network Settings and then a hard restart, and neither have seemed to remedy the problem as of yet. I'm assuming that ATT is dinking around with the towers or something. Anyone else having similar problems this morning?

I'm facing the same problem right now.. have been since this morning. I have tried shutting off the phone and turning it back on, but it's not fixing the problem.

Same here

Yep, having the same issue all morning. I'm in the Boston area. Tried rebooting, resetting network settings, toggling airplane mode on/off, no dice. Show full bars and the 3G symbol, but data not transferring.

Another data point: tried to web chat with an AT&T rep on this, but wasn't given the option to even get into a queue, just got booted. They may be getting slammed if the downage is widespread.

Me too. I'm in Connecticut. It was fine at 7:30am EST, but now at 8:50am, I'm getting the error message. I'm going to hold off on the network reset, especially since I'm not near my itunes account to restore any settings.

Same for me in New York. Was working just before 7:30am EST and is now dead.

Cannot Connect

I'm getting the same thing, am in the DC metro area. It was fine yesterday. Last email was at 7:20 a.m.

Grateful to know what is going on. . . Thank you.

Ny

I'm in the NY area so it looks like maybe its a northeast deal? While I'm not glad we're all having problems, at least I know its not just my two phones here.

Richmond

Same problems here in Richmond,VA. Worked this morning on the way to the gym at about 6:50. Did not work after I left the gym around 8:45.

Happening in Chicago as well

I checked to see if it was just me, but it appears to be widespread.

Hello, I am a new member from Maine. I just got my 8GB iPhone on Sunday and it was working great until this morning. I too get the "could not activate cellular network" when I try to access safari, email, youtube, pandora etc. It looks like you are all from different areas on the New England area. Possible widespread network problem??

ATT must be readying true MMS Support for Apple to announce today..........

Hahahahaha yeah right!! I'm kidding, I know MMS would be working like our texts are right now. Just kinda funny it's happening today. Hope ATT resolves it soon for us.

Problems in MA

This appear to be a national issue - but just for the record - I'm having problems connecting in Springfield, MA

I guess this is wide spread. I have had this problem all morning. I live in Montclair, NJ and work in Newark, NJ and I have had this issue all morning. Can't get e-mail, can't get on Safari. Forget the App store. I guess they're going to fix this soon.

Could not activate cellular data network - NJ

FYI, as per ATT, 920am EST, systemwide outage, "they are aware of the problem and are working to fix it as fast as possible", not ETA at this time. :(

UPDATE: 1010a EST, NJ back up

another one here: either it says "could not activate cellular data network" or it says "could not connect to mac mail sewrver".

sucks because i can't access mobileme through my work computer because our company still used IE6 and apple in it's wisdom dropped IE6 support.

i'm glad my GF followed my recommendation and bought a blackberry and not an iphone. she has much less trouble with the service. ok, this time it's ATT and not apple but still the blackberry seems to be a lot more robust on average.

cellulat data network - back again

I'm in CT and my connection works again. They must have been updating the network as I now have a full strength 3g connection, and previously I was only getting a somewhat good Edge connection.

Boston Back Up

I'm in the Boston area and I'm back up and working.. checked my mail, got on safari and the app store!
