It could. It could not. No telling at this point.

As for need -- usage varies. Just because some don't see the need for X storage capacity doesn't mean that there aren't those who can use it. Not everyone can or will use cloud storage.

Forget about the music, people who really care about storage space for all of it have iPods.
Not all do. No one solution is best for every person and situation. I care about storage for my music and it's in lossless format. I have no interest in managing a separate device like an iPod. A big reason why I switched to a smartphone a long time ago was convergence.

Anyone who has dealt with any tech for any amount of time knows that there's no such thing as too much storage.

We’re at a point where people find that a bigger phone is better than a tablet.
Also subjective. Everyone's needs/wants/preferences/priorities/etc are not identical. Everyone does not find a bigger phone better than a tablet. If that was a universal matter there would be no market for tablets at all.

Never assume that what works for you works best for everyone. Best is always highly subjective regardless of topic.

No, it's just not necessary. The future is the cloud, man! Better to sell you iCloud storage space in perpetuity than a one-time extra hundred bucks to buy a handset with more storage.

Cloud is nice till you travel a lot. I always get my apple mobile devices with the max storage available. Too much time in airports and on planes.

Exactly! All my music is in lossless format and I don't carry an iPod and a iPhone. The whole point of the phone was to have everything in one device.

To handle that compromise I use individually curator playlist for my music and only sync those playlist rather than my whole library, which I don't need anyway.

I'd love a larger capacity. I've got 100gb of my 128 used and I'm always adding to my music library. As well as photos and videos. I hate streaming and cloud storage. It's not reliable enough for me, especially with shared data caps.

If 4K 60FPS recording is a thing, it would be dumb not to have something higher than 128GB imo.

I already have a 160GB iPod classic to use in my car but still have a 128GB iPhone and iPad for my music. I don't use the cloud and prefer to have everything physically on my devices. I even bought a MBP with a 512GB SSD for the extra storage. I do have a 4TH HD connected to it for TV shows and movies and my iTunes music library. Your experience is not the same as everyone else's.
Me too. I don't want to have to depend on a good signal. I want my library available to me whenever wherever.

Preaching to the choir for me.

I just wish Apple would make a memory slot like Samsung has for their phones, and let me pick a large memory card to use. This with adding us to use our computers USB for copping and pasting files to and from the iPhones.
But don't think any of my wish's will happen also the phones will stay with the same memory phone plans they have alway had.

Most Samsung phones do not have SD Card slots. They've moved away from that. Try HTC.

I think this is the biggest reason that people are buying the highest capacity phones. They want their music library with them. I have never wanted the extra storage space for pictures or anything else.

It is for me. I listen to music on my Metro ride. That's underground. No signal. Also when I travel abroad. Can you imagine the data charges if I had to rely on the cloud?
Nah. I want my music on my device.

Anyone that travels much, whether underground, or like me by air, streaming/cloud is not a realistic option. We need what we want on the device.

For me its necessary. We travel a lot (part of my new husband's job) and especially when we visit my parents who live in the middle of nowhere. there is no cell phone reception, wifi reception is spotty at best "it works when it wants to work." With 4k video, live photos, movies for the kids to watch, my entire music library, Im constantly running low on memory and i like to have everything on hand with me. hopefully crossing my fingers they do come out with the 256 GB on the iPhone 7.:)

Won't see 256gb offered for at least another year...so 2017 at the earliest.

Why...part of the reason is the iPP. I know the iphone is Apple's top money-maker, but it doesn't look good if the iphone gets 256gb and the iPP does not. Another reason is the 16gb base model on the iPhone, Air and Mini - Apple loves that so many people are paying another $100 to get the intermediate storage model. Expect Apple will milk consumers one more year before they up the base.

So in 2017, we'll see the following:

- Base model iPhone and iPad Air will be bumped to 32gb, probably also the Mini. Only a very small chance the base jumps to 64gb...if the camera gets bumped to 4k video, then this increases the chance of 64gb base
- iPP 2 will debut, base model will be 64gb. Possibly a 128gb becomes the intermediate, and the 256gb gets introduced.

That's what I think...we shall see.

What in the world are you storing on your phone to need that much space?
people who use social media heavily. those apps have huge caches and the user takes tons of photos and videos constantly every day. Also games.

Or people who have music collections larger then 115GB, the available space on a 128GB iPhone. I would love to be able to have all my music with me, instead, I have just over 10,000 songs on my 6S+ the rest of the 5,500 on my 6S.

Amen. Those that don;t travel much have no idea how hard it can be to get consistent connectivity.

It is possible no 256G in 7 but there is for 7plus. "Plus" version of iPhone has slight higher gross margin with higher price which equal more revenue, so if Apple could find a way to make more clear differentiation between 7 and 7plus, they could help drive more people buying 7+, which translate to higher overall iPhone revenue.
With some rumor/perception of tough year, in turn of growth, for Apple to come in 2016, Apple will look for any opportunity to get more revenue, and getting more people buying 7+ instead of 7 will help on revenue.

Added: Specially for people "need" 256GB. They are buying base on the "need" not "want", so force them to get 7+ is a way to ensure higher revenue, vs if 256GB offer both in 7 and 7+.
