A few items over the past week have got me thinking. Maybe we have this idea of a 3g phone all wrong.

What if it is 2 phones that we are talking about.

Phone 1. Update existing iPhone design with 3G. This is possibly the reason for the shortages we are seeing nationwide. Perhaps this gets refreshed very very soon to cover the lack of iPhones.

Phone 2. New iPhone Pro. This is what the ramp up and build for an "advanced" version of the iPhone. We might see this in June. Perhaps have GPS, second camera, OLED, etc.

yeah, that's what i've responded sometimes in the some "3g iphone next tuesday" threads.

apple needs to add something more than 3g for iphone in order to keep the current price points. though the features you listed have nothing to do with "pro". a pro iphone would have enterprise features, such as ability for the it-department to administer the phone over the air and slide keyboard for email heavy user and stuff like that.

what you describe sounds more like multimedia-iphone. i'm not sure about price/benefit relation of oled yet, gps, 2nd camera for sure. other features of such phone would include 5mpix camera with autofocus and lens cover, video recording, geotagging of photos etc. in short, things that are common in european smartphones.

besides that, apple also needs something cheap to gain sales volume, especially if they plan to enter china. actually they wouldn't even need 3g as i think china is even behind the us in 3g network coverage.

Maybe you didn't get my point. Both phones will have 3G. The "pro" version could have a combination of bells and whistles that we have been hearing about (you know how reliable rumors are). OLED, GPS, Video Chat, etc. are just a few of the possible things that might make a "Pro" version.

And this "pro" version is the one Hon Hai won the contract for and parts have been procured for recently. The rumors peg an initial build of this in May.

I think the "standard" iPhone version is the one that is flying under the radar. This will have 3G and may be coming out very soon.

Remember the invitation to WWDC, Two bridges. While this may reference OSX and iPhone development platforms, it may also refer to the two iphone versions too. (I know, I know WWDC isn't about hardware)

They wouldn't separate the market this early on. It was years before an iPod Mini was released (although it has no bearing on this), Apple would likely get the concept of an Apple phone out there for a while and then build upon it.

iPhone Nano in some form will likely be released in the distant future. But no. At this stage Apple have 1 product to try and storm the market with.

3G does mean a front facing camera, since 3G+video calling have gone hand in hand since the network started. OLED and 32gb are progressional technologies, once they get cheaper they will be used.

I severally doubt the idea of a Pro phone at this stage. What I could imagine is a mini tablet "pro" device but come iPhone OS2 and it'll have features aimed at the pro-phone market.

Actually 3G doesn't necessarily mean a front facing camera.

I would disagree that 3G and video calling have gone hand in hand. Very few 3G phones currently have this feature. If you name a few, I will name twice as many that don't.

3G is not the Holy Grail of wireless. There will be 4G and 5G cell phone technologies in the future. It is simply a faster network that enables new and exciting features. It is all about cost.

It only makes financial sense if Apple chooses to have a loaded "Pro" version and a lesser "Standard" phone. Look at the macbook and macbook pro.

Only time will tell what Apple has up its sleeve. I was merely stating my thoughts with what limited data we have available to work with. In the meantime, lets watch, wait, and of course speculate because that is all we can do. ;)
