People will move to whatever is the next trend.

This. Right. Here. Last year people were talking about how the 5.8” X was the perfect size and the sweet spot. Fast forward a year and those same people are saying how the X/XS are too small and the XS Max is the sweet spot. Since the XS Max is the newest thing people are going to get it to be “in” with the “trend.”

Seriously afraid to ask about the size of your jeans

It fits into my jeans pocket comfortably.

I can remember getting a Sony Xperia Z in early 2013; that device was amongst the first to have a full HD screen and it was 5", considered big at the time.

But it had huge, sharp bezels, was the most uncomfortable phone to use ever and was a no-no for fitting into a jeans pocket as I felt like I was getting constantly stabbed by it, especially sitting down.

I don’t agree with that. I think a lot of members and from what I read, were saying the 5.8 X was actually relatively smaller than expected when they first purchased it. I think the 6.5 Max isn’t necessarily a trendsetter, but it offers the larger display and bigger battery, that’s really what you’re purchasing. Larger displays have been the trend for years now, and Apple it’s finally matching what other competitors have been marketing for years with larger displays.

I definitely don’t think I could go back to a smaller screen or device, amen I don’t think I’d want something bigger. The XS Max fits perfectly in my hands and feels really great. I honestly hated my X. I wanted to much to like it, but I found it so small (coming from an 8+). This is the sweet spot for me.

I'm reading this tread because I'm thinking about getting a new phone. I know the XS is an upgrade to my X but it still looks like the X. Going with the Max would definitely feel like I got something different but... as someone else mentioned, I'd like the screen but not the size of the phone. I liked how easy it was to carry an iPhone 5 or 6. I'd slip them into my pocket then forget they were there. I notice the X most of the time and definitely wouldn't forget about the XS Max. I really don't want to return the phone if I get it so I'm wondering if I'll regret going big.

FWIW - I usually have my iPad with me or in the car while I'm out. I use that most of the time.

You will have a lot on the forum recommend the XS Max because it is the “new” product from Apple. However, I will recommend the XS as it is not too big but it is not tiny either.
