not sure if this has been asked. I have an iphone 5s and i am currently on the mobile share value plan with at&t and my contract is up on september of 2015.
If i buy an iphone 6 on launch day and replace the 6 with my 5s (same line), would at&t unlock my 5s since the 6 is now taking its place on my contract ?
Thanks

post 19 :)

Everyone hates sprint that's why :) Sprint and Verizon use CDMA. As long as good ESN you should be able to use it on Verizon. The problem with sprint is that their phones do not come factory unlocked. from what I know its a pain to get them unlocked. They are usually the most expensive. If you buy full price I think they require that you stay an active customer for more than 30 days for them to unlock it free.

Personally I wouldn't get a sprint phone. I would prefer to buy a Verizon full price on craigslist.

Sorry I'm not biased but SPRINT really :)

Look what I found:

Unlock your Sprint device
.

Many Sprint phones or tablets ('devices') have been programmed with a master subsidy lock or 'MSL' that locks the device to certain operational parameters for use on Sprint's network and prevents the device from attempting to be activated on other carriers' networks. Sprint will provide any applicable MSL code, upon request, provided you have met the unlocking requirements provided below.

Not all Sprint devices have an MSL code or a locking function that can be unlocked by Sprint (e.g., Apple devices cannot be unlocked to accept another domestic carrier's SIM card). On certain devices, not all functionality may be unlocked (e.g., for some smartphone devices, Sprint may be able to unlock the CDMA/voice functionality of the device but unable to unlock the GSM/UMTS/LTE portion of the device). Even if unlocked, Sprint devices will not necessarily work on another carrier's network.

Sprint. Customer for 90 days. Pay your bill on time. Will not unlock for domestic US carrier use for any reason. International unlock only. Any third party unlock is scamming you. Although there are legit third party unlock services for about $150 that will unlock Sprint phones for international use. These are irrelevant to US customers.

Sprint's recent update to their unlock policy blames everything on the manufacturer.

Sprint pairs the ID of the SIM card with the MEID of the phone. If they do not match (i.e., you use a non Sprint paired SIM) you get no service.

EDIT: See the link in my signature.

For those of you on AT&T, my contract is up in February, but I was able to get an unlock to go through on the website. I kept talking to customer service reps on chat and they kept saying no. But on the third try on the website it just magically went through. So it might be worth it to keep trying.

Yes just google ATT unlock request. You get 5 free request a year. I would wait a couple of days for your old phone to register as not being under contract.

Where is the link to this mandate?

Why is ATT not mandated to have theirs unlocked. That wouldn't be fair to Verizon...

Verizon uses the lower c block of the 700 mhz spectrum.

FCC rules state that any devices operating on that must be UNLOCKED and throttling isn't allowed which is why Verizon doesn't throttle it's 4g users, they just charge extra.

AT&T doesn't operate on that frequency with their 4g so they have that advantage.

yes! 100% don't pay Verizon for their bogus international plans!

i have brought it to india and it doesn't work.

It's iphone 5 A1429 (verizon).
It has worked well for verizon and at&t while in US.

Any idea??

Whenever i put in a sim(GSM) , it search then it go to No Service Zone. (unable to load network list when manual option is selected)

I would try resetting network settings. But ask a friend with a local working iphone or try a different carrier. Some zones are deadZones. If its a Verizon phone works all gsm bands. I'm sure its a reception issue or some carriers require you put configurations in the phone for it to work. T movie used to be that with with iphone 5.

No one knows if the new Verizon Iphone 6 will work the same way the 5C or 5S but everyone speculates that they will. APPLE was sick of making two different model phones after Iphone 4. (Iphone 4 Verizon had no SIM Slot) so they told Verizon: " Listen we will make you a CDMA phone even though the rest of the world only uses GSM but your phones will be unlocked to GSM. Take it or leave it!"

Verizon was probably cornered and said ok because we are not going GSM!

Advantage of having a Verizon phone is that you can go both ways CDMA or GSM. so yes straight talk (GSM)or anyone else will work. Friend of mine is moving to Italy and has a Verizon Iphone 5s. Told him to keep it.

Thank you.

1) Verizon iPhone 5C/5S are not compatible with Sprint (also because sprint will not activated devices not sold by them

2) Apple wasn't the one that said "Take it or leave it" that is false, FCC made it mandatory that Verizon leave the GSM portion of their devices unlocked when Verizon purchased the 700MHz C Block for their LTE network aka Band 13.

The new iPhone 6 / 6 Plus even more of a universal model than iPhone 5C/5S with larger # of LTE bands. Still Sprint and Verizon CDMA remains on two separate models because Sprint is now owned by Japan's Softbank and they have different TD-LTE much like a few other parts of the world.

Predominantly AT&T / T-Mobile / GSM Factory Unlocked models A1522/A1549 will be the ones sold in majority of the world.

A1522/A1549 CDMA aka Verizon model will only be sold in USA.

A1586 / A1524 model aka Sprint model will be sold in USA, Japan and other countries that have TD-LTE networks.

Please stop spreading false information and misleading people

Verizon will not activate any device not sold by them PERIOD!

NO, NO one should buy a iPhone from Craigslist especially NEW! Only scammers are selling devices new on Craigslist and most of the devices are purchased on EIP / 2 Year contracts, Scammers then do not pay the bill and unsuspecting customers are left with a brick because carriers blacklist the device!

Normal people would not buy a device at FULL PRICE and then sell it on Craigslist for a discount.

Only time one should buy iPhone brand new off craigslist is IF

1) Person provides receipt that clearly states FULL amount paid (you can find the full price of the iPhone on Apple.com

2) Person is listing the device for higher than Apple.com price with receipt showing device has been paid off in FULL -- this is normal as someone would do so during first day or week to make little cash.

OTHERWISE Carrier / Network Blacklists the device IMEI = WILL NOT WORK IN USA EVEN IF UNLOCKED!

Sprint iPhone Unlock = Virtually impossible due to their policies, the success rate of non-customers = 0

Lastly, Sprint is changing their Unlock Policy, starting early 2015, however we don't know what kind of limitations they are going to have in place, most likely the requirements for unlock will remain the same, however they may allow the use of domestic networks? I highly doubt it tho, perhaps only international usage.

So please don't misguiding people, thanks

1) Make sure 3G is ON as some carriers only have 3G networks and no 2G network (yes I know India mostly has 2G networks than 3G but they are in the process of upgrading

2) Restore the device with the new SIM inside, makes sure you have the correct APN settings.

3) Make sure the device is not blacklisted: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/nso/enterDeviceId.do?&zipRdr=y (type in the first 14 digits of the IMEI (IMEI = 15 numbers long)
