Wish I could change the default search engine for searching the Internet using Siri, it’s always Google no matter what settings you have set. o_O 📱
For what it’s worth, you can turn off web searches from Spotlight by going to Settings->Search->Show Related Content (toggle off). It won’t stop google searches from Siri unfortunately.

Personally, I like using Spotlight for searching on my iPhone for Photos, Notes, etc and using Safari for web searches where you can choose the search engine.

I don't see any way the consumer gains anything by this.
If Apple, with a commitment to generating shareholder value, lost a $20 billion/year income stream, they'd want to replace that...and some of that burden might fall on us. Those base M4 Mac Minis were lauded as offering great value, and I'd like that to continue to be the case moving forward.
iOS isn’t out to scrape every last bit of info on you and your family/ peers…
Because their monetization model is different, relying on hardware, app. store and services sales. Most any private sector computing platform business model needs to be monetized some way (at least the mainstream leaders like Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, Facebook and Google; Linux is probably its own discussion). The question is, how do you pay? If someone came to market with a Facebook alternative that charged a monthly subscription but didn't have ad.s or collect personal info., some people would use it...but it'd be a minority, I think. Wonder what % of YouTube customers pay for YouTube Premium?

Honestly you should give it a shot. It’s so much better than Google.

I was like you, thinking “who would pay for search?!?” But a friend convinced me to try it and, well, here I am paying.

Interesting and I've heard good things about Kagi...Depends on what you do, though, I guess? I don't really use search all that much, and the web, other than a few specific sites, isn't needed for my job.

Is it worth it for day to day? I currently use DDG.

You don’t seem to understand. They are not going to change the default search engine to something worse and deliberately create a worse user experience just because Google stopped paying them bribe money.
You’re not understanding that Google makes money from Apple choosing it as the default search engine, so they will continue to pay… nd it’s not “bribe”, you’re clearly not understanding that

This really feels like a judgment where a lot of unofficial ‘quiet words’ were had in the judge’s ear.

As in:

This is yesterday’s antitrust case. The world is moving on from search with GenAI being paramount.

Google are already producing GenAI and really might be the first to AGI, which will have massive geopolitical and economic implications …

So:

Don’t upset the goose as it’s laying the golden egg.

I can’t imagine how or why the deal still exists. Seems really dumb on Googles part. They have the best search engine by a mile. If they stopped paying tomorrow, what’s Apple going to do? They’re not going to update all their customers’ default search engine to something worse.
This is them paying Apple to not develop their own search engine

Serious question. Would anything change if google didn't pay apple but people still chose google as their default search engine?
No. Google is the best free option by miles, even if it isn't as good as it used to be. I am convinced Apple would still set Google as the default even without payment. Bing is probably the only one who could handle the traffic and it's just not in the same league as Google. DDG has privacy angle, but they probably couldn't handle the traffic Apple sent their way, and even if they could, it's really just a re-skinned Bing.

People need to seriously think through what would happen if Apple replaced Google as the default. It'd be the introduction of Apple Maps all over again.

Agreed, and it makes me think Google is getting more than just default search from Apple they must be getting something with a perceived value greater than $20B per year.
How about first pick of the fruits in Apple's walled garden? Unlike outside the garden, where users fend for themselves, those in the garden thinks Apple has their best interest at heart. "If Google is the default search engine, it can't be bad, right?"😇 O sweet child of summer.🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️🫣

Let’s have that Linux discussion! How would Linux fit into it all??…

And as far as Facebook goes if the alternative company was charging and it wasn’t outrageous and offered a utilitarian type of site (FB), a social site (IG), and a private e2e message service (WA) AND had all sort of celebs, athletes, influencers and politicians etc. on board then yeah, a sizable amount of ppl would $upport it I think…

As for paying YouTube customers I’d say at least 8%?…this includes their TV service too right? Plus ya gotta figure those who love the streamers and all the different content creators on there..

And ppl saying Apple doesn’t really have their customers interest at heart ..eh, from what I hear on these boards, ya gotta keep the shareholders happy…this allows growth (?), so they can R&D etc and create new PRODUCTS for their CUSTOMERS (see what I did there?)…to do this at the best of their ability, sometimes, they gotta do business with companies that view consumers as the products and not the customer….just my guess…

Multi-factorial. The people who produce open source have to make a living, ideally in occupations that provide and reinforce coding skills, and despite the high enthusiasm for 'free stuff,' Linux still commands nowhere near the mindshare amongst the general American public of Microsoft Windows, and likely MacOS. It's still more on the radar of enthusiasts, and when one takes a closer look at it, a confusing mess of 'distro.s' (with some weird naming), etc... I watched a YouTube tech. sector influencer (Switch & Click) share her 'journey' into Linux, and she started with Mint (I'd heard of Ubuntu; wondered why someone would go with Mint over Ubuntu (since I didn't know the difference), but it was indicated Mint is supposed to be similar to Windows), but then changed over to Fedora.

All the cheer-leading in the world doesn't change the fact at the personal computing level the Linux world looks like a confusing mess that requires a higher level of sophistication than most 'non-nerds' care to cultivate and commit to it. I wonder what software app. availability, hardware compatibility and so forth looks like?

The level of simplicity and polish produced via the mainstream private sector for-profit commercial products means Linux isn't going to fit into it any time soon.

People go where people are. The free model that's already got the majority will continue to be patronized heavily by those people you mentioned (e.g.: influencers). Efforts to put out alternative social media platforms come out once in awhile...but it's the free access like TikTok that seem to gain serious ground.

$216/yr for searching? Okay, but no. We use Brave and google, no bloat, no ads and we party like it's 2003.
It's $5/mo for 300 searches which is generally enough for me. It more than pays for itself for me in time and frustration saved, even if it was double that I"d still pay it. Google ads are not the only concern, the quality of the results suck and the AI Overviews are horrible.

To each their own, but try it out before you write me off. There's a free trial with no payment needed and you can see for yourself. Or ignore it, and then ignore me and don't respond to this – but there's a reason 50k people agree with me, and it isn't because we like spending.

A smart colleague recommended it to me and I tried it, and have used it since. Not affiliated, just a happy user and I think it's not very well known because people have exactly the reaction you do here.

I rather pay for products vs. be the product. :)

I recognize not everyone can afford that or will choose to make those tradeoffs, however.
