Well I got it to them and collected it cost £23 in travel.

Case was replaced under warranty.

Bluetooth is now unavailable and my video output is a funny colour.
I rang the service centre. He said it was not tested long enough! so why the **** did he say to go pick it up?
I now have to wait until Tuesday for an "engineer" to call.

I hate apple.

This is exactly why I don't want to have my machine sent in to fix the cracks. The one time I had to send it in for service, I was stuck without my machine for a month, not because of the original problem, but because I had to send it back immediately because the tech screwed it up. It took them longer to fix the problem that they caused than it took to fix the original problem. In my experience, Apple's "engineers" are half-ass.

I can't be without this machine for a month because of a cosmetic problem. If it were another dead logic board, it would be one thing, but this is just hairline cracking of the case. It has no effect on my daily work.

The bottom of my right palmrest has a crack on it. There's a chip on the palmrest where my palm sits.

On top of that, my screen flickers and even after getting a new logic board, the problem still persists. They're getting me a new LCD as we speak, but that won't fix the "sleep" problem I'm suffering, either.

My cracking situation appears to be spreading. Now my magsafe adapter is also starting to crack.

Has anyone else had the Magsafe cracking problem?

Stuff like this makes me wonder if Apple even cares about built quality. How could they be unaware of this? I worked a long time to save up for my Macbook because I thought they were superior machines, but with all the problems I've been reading about lately on here, I'm terrified to even touch my Macbook.

Much of what you read here is untruthful and/or exaggerated. Not all, mind. Your post is just silly. Apple has the best engineering and manufacturing engineering. I have never met anyone personally who did not get a satisfactory result from them. They are a large company, so I am sure it must happen on an infrequent basis. But, it sure as h**l is not an acceptable way for an Apple store/employee to conduct business.

If you really feel 'terrified', post the specs of your laptop, with serial number. I will make you an offer for it. I have been in this industry for over 25 years. Apple is the best company I have ever dealt with.

Sigh.

I spoke the the apple service centre (asc) they said to ring apple.
Apple told me that it should be fine to just take the macbook into the asc and get the case replaced.
Sooo I rang the asc and he said you will need to ring this number to get confirmation that the repair can be done.
I rang the number and it was just another asc who could do nothing to help.

So I spoke to apple again to see if I could get it sorted out. They said that the case is not covered by warranty and if they fix it it will be an exception.
(this is after I have already been told it will be fixed)
I complained stating that every item bought within the UK has a year warranty for all parts against manufacturing defects.

They said I have to take the Mac to the asc so they can asses whether or not the crack is down to misuse or not.
Its insulting that they wont take my word for it that it is a manufacturing defect.

So I have to travel up there or send it with no guarantee that anything will be done.
This is getting to be as poor as what happened with my G4.

If anything has ever made me want to go PC its apples customer service.

Are these the same people you spoke with when you took the compressed air, and vacuum cleaner to your G4?

don't feel bad when they won't take your word, you maybe a good honest person, but most are not. I was at an Apple store one day. I was buying some RAM and a few other things. The couple next to me was trying to return their iPod Nano because it was broken. The whole ipod itself was bent in a 90 degree angle. They swore up and down that it was like that when they got it. Seeing as how the box had not a single sign of damage it was obvious that the girl had it in her back pocket and sat on it. Thats why they want you to take it to an ASC. Because of people like them not you. It's sad, but we have to live in a world of dishonest people.

First off, let me apologize for the poor quality of pictures (camera phone
is all I have at the house right now). They do, however, show what I'm
talking about. Not sure why the first one is larger than the others, but
you'll get the idea.

First, here is a picture of the back of the Macbook separating:

The other side which has not separated.... yet.

Now here is the bottom left corner of my screen.. there is a serious gap
there as the case splits away from the screen.

Mind you this laptop has been in my possession for under two weeks, and
has only left the house ONCE (and I babied it every step) to the Apple
Store, where the "Genius" told me this was normal and he could do nothing
about it. I paid over a thousand dollars for this thing and I have to put
up with it falling apart on me?

Apple says they can do nothing.

So... still want to buy it? ;)

Looking at your pics and comparing my laptop's condition to yours, it appears that you guys are looking awfully hard for gaps, cracks and other anomalies.

Ever since I saw this thread, I've been looking at my laptop to determine if I've similar issues. I didn't see anything until I saw the posted pics and compared them to my laptop. I indeed have similar gaps that I didn't originally account for (behind the laptop where the vents are and the LCD frame). The thing is, I'd have never noticed them without looking at the provided pictures.

I'm not going to get bent out of shape over this. These appear to be more of design flaws and not actual defects (such as the mentioned 'cracking'). When the gaps and 'cracks' start to get so big that it causes operational issues is when I'll start to get concerned. Also, my gaps don't appear to be as bad as some of the ones in the pics...makes me wonder how you guys and gals are treating your laptops.

I've treated this laptop with the utmost care. It has only left my house once and I was very protective of it that one time (took it to the Apple Store). Here at home it sits on my table. I have no pets or anything that could remotely harm the computer. I wash my hands every time before I use it. I take extra measures to be very gentle and careful with what I buy. I saved up months for this laptop, it is not some random thing I toss around and scratch up. Like I already said in my post, these flaws were not caused by me. They were already present when I took it out of the box. It was shipped to me in this condition.

Photos dont lie.
Apples engineers damaged both of my macs whilst trying to fix faults caused by poor manufacturing.

Update of the situation.

The bluetooth came on on its own? its now working fine.

I spoke to the apple service centre and he went few a few things to fix my monitor but nothing worked. So my output is still purple.

He said to ring apple and ask them. The wanted to sell me applecare before they would even talk to me. I got nothing from them.

So I will be paying out again for my warranty repair.

sigh.

just noticed that all the macbooks (i've seen) that cracked were on the white ones. are the black macbooks made of something else?

Just to let you know, I've had the same problem with calling in with problems. You will get service, but you have to agree that if it is not a hardware issue that you will pay whatever amount it is. You also need to be very clear that you are not interested in buying apple care. AND reinteract that you are calling about a hardware issue... I just tell them the truth: i know what I'm doing with software and don't need the phone support so I buy my ac just before it expires.
Don't let apple's used car sales approach to warranty repair deter you - you should get the computer fixed under the warranty conditions.

I got my macbook back today. New logic board.
They had stuck a label on my suede case, it left a huge sticky mess.
They have kept my case and say they will get it cleaned.
This is after I stopped him from going at it with meths.

My macbook has black fingerprints all over it and the base is scratched to ****. The base they changed under warranty.
Apple have no customer support and the quality control is non existant.
I am so sick of this.

When I had to send my Macbook in for service, it was returned in similar condition. It had deep circular scratches on it, as if it had been spun like a top. I called Applecare, and they took care of it by replacing my case.

They fixed it, but I was pissed, and I'm still reluctant to send my machine back to them for service.

I can't wait until my warranty is up and I don't have to feel guilty about cracking it open and servicing it myself.

Well, I sucked it up today, and decided to send my cracked Macbook in for service. They're replacing the topcase and bottomcase.

I'll update you on the quality of the service.

Well I've got to hand it to them. When they want to they can get the work done quick. I sent my book in on Wednesday, and had it back this morning.

They replaced the bottom case, and I've got to say, I think they've improved the plastics since I purchased my Macbook. It feels tougher/thicker.

But, as always with Apple service, quick doesn't mean good. I sent my Macbook in without a scratch, and it arrives with scratches, and not light scratching, deep swirly scratching. Not only that, but the "new" bottom case that they put on has a bunch of numbers carved into it.

This is the second time this has happened to me when sending this computer in for service. Apple techs get this computer in their hands and abuse it. It went in far cracking that was barely noticeable on the bottom case. It comes back with scratching that anyone can see. It looks worse now than it did when it went in.

Am I going to do anything about it? Probably not. I can't keep sending my machine in for cosmetic reasons. I wish I never had sent it in to begin with. I should have known better. These jokers don't give a rip about how they treat the computers they work on.

Apple needs to train these "engineers" on how to treat other people's possessions. Or, better yet, build these computers so they won't fall apart to begin with.

It's been roughly a month since my last post concerning this. This morning I took a look at my Macbook, and guess what?

My bottom case is cracking, again.

I guess I'll call Applecare, again, and have my case replaced for the 3rd time.

Now I'm pissed. I love this machine, but I've never had such a problematic computer. This will be the fourth time, in six months, that I've had to send this machine in for service.

Cracks on WMB

I have joined the cracking club! I've had my white macbook since October 2007, and in the last week or 2, the wrist rest bit has started to crack. I am sure this is where the lid hits it when it closes.

When I read someone elses post about cracks by the vent, I looked and sure enough, there are very obvious hairline cracks on the lip at the edge of the bottom piece of plastic. I can post pics at some point if people would like to see.

My other problem is with the slot-loading drive, which sometimes squeezes together so that I physically have to pull it apart in order for it to eject disks. I know this is (a bit) off topic, but does anyone else have this problem? Is this covered by warranty? Feel free to direct me to other more appropriate threads if you like.

I'm very dissapointed as until about 2 weeks ago I had no problems at all with it, just some minor niggles. I was so impressed that I was very tempted not to buy another PC, except for gaming. However from these problems with build quality, and, apparently customer service, I'm not sure if Apple are as good as they seem?
