I would go through the apple store to be honest or if you feel like you. An do it your self etradesupply.com is a great place to buy new parts close to oem

I would have it done by apple, if your going to take it to a 3rd party mobile repair shop in the high street you might as well repair it yourself, a complete front assembly "digitizer and screen" will probably cost about £30 on ebay, it wont be genuine but the parts a high street repairer uses wont be either and they will charge you about £80 for fitting it also, its dead easy to do yourself, two screws and patience is all that's needed.

my screen is utterly shattered. and I'm worried about cutting myself because every time my finger with a screen I can feel the shattered glass. when I press certain buttons have to press it very hard and sometimes the keyboard doesn't even work i'm thinking about buying one on eBay but it's only $20 should I be suspicious? here is the link:

maybe the site URL won't work on a computer I apologize I only have my phone right now.

That's for just the glass - you'd have to somehow separate the existing broken glass from the digitizer (which it is bonded to) before using the replacement glass and that's a far from trivial task

Ok, as long as you are careful you should be ok, maybe wear rubber gloves when repairing?, ok that link is for the digitizer only, you will have to separate the glass digitizer from the screen and attach the new digitizer glass to your screen which is allot of work and the chances are it wont look right after or sit flush, I recommend buying the complete front assembly which incudes the screen and digitizer as a single complete part, all you will have to do is remove your touch id / home button from your phone and screw it onto the new part, it is held in place with two small screws, below is a link for the part, it's £35 not sure what that is in dollars but it's certainly cheaper than having apple or a third party do it, but if you don't feel confident it may be worth paying for someone who is experienced to do it for your piece of mind.

There are loads of youtube tutorials online for this also.

This.

I would just get the entire assembly (glass and digitizer) and replace both. I did this on the 4S and it wasn't easy, but not terribly difficult for a noob like me.

5/5S is FAR easier as you don't have to disassemble the entire device. Like someone said, it's only two screws and some very careful prying and fitting.

Well, the front glass has no functionality although the quality of the glass could determine how easy it is to scratch and shatter.

As long as you are comfortable doing the repair yourself, it should be fine.
