What about the front screen? Any ideas on how to replace that at least expensive price?

A SquareTrade Warranty is looking pretty goo right about now huh? $80 for 2/yrs. including drops and spills. $50 deductible. PM if you're gracious enough for a referral. I do have a 50% coupon although I haven't read the terms. I'll forward it to you.

The exact same thing happened to me. Was just looking at my phone a few mornings ago, and noticed a hairline crack in the glass all the way down the middle of the back of the phone: from top to bottom.

No idea how it got there. Never dropped it. Never "leaned on it wrong". Just went in to the Apple Store, cited my dropped calls issue, my proximity sensor issue, and the crack, and the Genius told me he'd replace my phone because of the crack, and that the dropped calls and prox sensor issues were user error.

 Got a replacement phone, though. Was very polite throughout the entire process.

User error? Seriously? I wonder if I could argue that the case is defective in not protecting the iPhone entirely. It's not like I played football in it. I take it to and from the office in my pocket and I definitely don't remember anyone or anything bumping into me.

Maybe if you don't talk BS like a Bumper case is defective because BLA BLA BLA, the Apple rep might help you.

Agreed. The bumper case is not defective as it never advertises covering the back of the phone. I don't think that you should take this approach with Apple in trying to get your phone replaced. Good luck, OP.

Did you have any luck getting the phone replaced by Apple? Mine has also cracked and wondering what the best way to activate Apple's warranty is? Any ideas?

I have my appointment with a Genius in an hour. I'm hopeful. Did you see the other thread? It seems that Apple has been very nice about replacing broken phones.

That's very comforting! Thanks!

I wonder if the new glass is heat sensitive. I live in Las Vegas and the temperatures right now are over 100 degrees and dry. Anyone else with cracked glass live in high heat areas?

I was skeptical at first. But after looking at your pic, I realized that looks like a crack from leaning against something. Pressure right near the middle of glass cracks just like that. (as opposed to a "spider" from the corner which would come from a drop)

They should have used Lexan (sp) or some such plastic for the back. I Wonder how long it will be until folks offer custom logo backs? A skull &crossbones Apple (see wallpaper thread) or maybe a boltface logo would be sweeeeet.

I'm really becoming scared of keeping this phone past the return date. Soo many possible issues being reported. It also pisses me off that the next gem version will coming will all these issues fixed.

*sigh*. Life of an Apple early adopter.

could the bumper be too tight and squeezing the iphone, putting pressure in just the right place to cause the crack?

Sorry to see these cracked iPhones. I'd love to see a nice aftermarket rear panel that isn't made of glass. Seeing how it's easy enough to take off and replace I hope these will be showing up soon.

The front and back covers of iPhone are made of glass. This glass could
break if iPhone is dropped on a hard surface or receives a substantial
impact or is crushed, bent, or deformed. If the glass chips or cracks, do not
touch or attempt to remove the broken glass. Stop using iPhone until the
glass is replaced by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Glass
cracked due to misuse or abuse is not covered under the warranty.
If you are concerned about scratching or abrasion, you can use one of
the many cases sold separately.

Taken directly form the iphone 4 user guide which can be found here

Im not being funny but its not Apples fault, glass is fragile and will break if it is dropped bent deformed etc.

Its Apples fault with putting glass on the phone in the first place but they did tell its glass and it is breakable.

Well, I met with the Genius and he said I definitely did something... i still have no idea what though. The good news is that they are going to replace my iPhone for me! Gotta love Apple service!

Congratulations. I would suggest that you get a case for your new phone, as Apple may not be so generous if it happens again.

I'm glad you got a new phone. However, you DID cause it to break, whether you recall bumping into something or not. They don't spontaneously snap in the middle. Where the crack is indicates you hit it against something.

Anyway, enjoy your new phone. Also? Buy a case.

I really like that case, but with its minimal amount of padding I wonder how well it can absorb and redirect impact forces away from the glass. Not to mention, how much does that aluminum surround block the antenna's signal.

straight from their website:

"The inside of the Vapor case is lined with a very high tech shock absorbing material that reduces the G-forces of an impact. It also creates a non-conductive barrier to help maintain the iPhone's antenna signal strength."

so neither of those concerns should be an issue

Not sure if someone asked, but what kind of pants were you wearing? Was the pocket tight at all? Because I know if I put my iPod touch in my jeans pocket and sit down, it gets quite squeezed (I'm not testing this out with my iPhone).

I wear relaxed fit pants/short/khakis. Definitely nothing tight or with a shallow pocket. Still a mystery to me.

I had a highly similar issue. I left it outdoors on a pool chair, the next morning (which was a very warm day) there was a crack and the 'Temperature... iPhone cannot be used until it cools down' error was active.

It's good to see positive exchange experiences from other members, though. I'm going to take this in soon and try my chances. Thanks to OP and others for posting feedback and sharing information!

The fact that it is metal surrounding the antennae is enough to potentially cause a problem. There doesn't need to be metal to metal contact to cause issues.

Faraday Cages do this without any metal to metal contact.

If they refuse to replace it and try to take $199 to replace it, just remove the two screws and push the back glass up. It'll pop right out and you can just buy another 'back'.

$33 from here.

Has anybody used this site? I wouldn't mind buying the white back ^_^
