User error? Seriously? I wonder if I could argue that the case is defective in not protecting the iPhone entirely. It's not like I played football in it. I take it to and from the office in my pocket and I definitely don't remember anyone or anything bumping into me.
Maybe if you don't talk BS like a Bumper case is defective because BLA BLA BLA, the Apple rep might help you.
Did you have any luck getting the phone replaced by Apple? Mine has also cracked and wondering what the best way to activate Apple's warranty is? Any ideas?
The exact same thing happened to me. Was just looking at my phone a few mornings ago, and noticed a hairline crack in the glass all the way down the middle of the back of the phone: from top to bottom.
No idea how it got there. Never dropped it. Never "leaned on it wrong". Just went in to the Apple Store, cited my dropped calls issue, my proximity sensor issue, and the crack, and the Genius told me he'd replace my phone because of the crack, and that the dropped calls and prox sensor issues were user error.
Got a replacement phone, though. Was very polite throughout the entire process.
I think Apple got sold a bill of goods on this Gorilla Glass.
And they did no testing of their own.
Well, I met with the Genius and he said I definitely did something... i still have no idea what though. The good news is that they are going to replace my iPhone for me! Gotta love Apple service!

I really like that case, but with its minimal amount of padding I wonder how well it can absorb and redirect impact forces away from the glass. Not to mention, how much does that aluminum surround block the antenna's signal.
could the bumper be too tight and squeezing the iphone, putting pressure in just the right place to cause the crack?
Not sure if someone asked, but what kind of pants were you wearing? Was the pocket tight at all? Because I know if I put my iPod touch in my jeans pocket and sit down, it gets quite squeezed (I'm not testing this out with my iPhone).
I wonder if the new glass is heat sensitive. I live in Las Vegas and the temperatures right now are over 100 degrees and dry. Anyone else with cracked glass live in high heat areas?
straight from their website:
"The inside of the Vapor case is lined with a very high tech shock absorbing material that reduces the G-forces of an impact. It also creates a non-conductive barrier to help maintain the iPhone's antenna signal strength."
so neither of those concerns should be an issue
If they refuse to replace it and try to take $199 to replace it, just remove the two screws and push the back glass up. It'll pop right out and you can just buy another 'back'.
$33 from here.
The fact that it is metal surrounding the antennae is enough to potentially cause a problem. There doesn't need to be metal to metal contact to cause issues.
Faraday Cages do this without any metal to metal contact.
