its honestly the only phone i know of thats pretty much guaranteed to break if you drop it, i would call that a poor design. What kills me is during the keynote when they were talking about the 3g they had some guy from the military talking about how the iPhone would be great for them, hahaha that thing would never pass the standards they have for adverse conditions

i guess its design over function, everyone i know carries their iphone in a rubber or ugly plastic case...i am 6 foot 4 so the drop is a little higher for me ...and it was on to a wooden floor i was shocked that it was so damaged ..it still works but there are 4 or 5 cracks in the glass at the corner

I have dropped many a phone over the years and have never broken one from a drop

Phones of the past didn't have huge exposed glass screens like the iPhone. If you want to carry around a tiny computer, then it needs protection. You risk breaking it from a fall if you don't. I never used a case with previous phones, but there really isn't much choice with phones like this. You take a risk without a case. It also depends on how it lands too. There was a video done a few months ago of someone dropping his iPhone onto cement and most of the drops did no damage. It just took that one drop at a certain angle to crack the screen.

A buddy tripped over the cord charging it one night sending it flying onto a tile floor - ended up having quite a few cracks running up and down the iPhone's screen. I was pretty pissed and took it into an Apple store to see what my options were.

The guy replaced it right there for free - I didn't argue :D
