Ditto on just taking it to the store, you might walk away with a new laptop. I dropped my ipad 2, it cracked the screen in the corner, a hairline crack. I explained to the tech that I dropped it and was cringing to hear the repair costs but he asks me how much memory it had and which 3gs it had then walks to the back and brings out a new one and hands it to me. He then explained that he could tell it was an accident instead of negligence due to the nature of the crack hence the no-hassle replacement. I did not have Applecare on the Ipad. He said that if it happened again that they couldn't replace it a second time - understandable.

Therefore the fact that you have a hairline crack may resonate properly with the techs and they'll see you aren't trying anything funny on them and they'll just as likely help you out in an unexpected fashion - all you got to do is go and ask.

Unless you have the black card, then this is incorrect. For most people, AMEX only adds 1 more year.

Given that Macs come with a 1 year warranty, it doubles it, then.

Anyway, to the OP, there is no harm in taking it to the Apple Store and seeing what happens. If there is no sign of obvious damage to the outside, then it might well just be a defective panel.

Hi all,

I have a 2010 MacBook Air. Yesterday, we noticed a hairline crack in the middle. We're not sure how it happened. Nothing dropped on it. No misuse. We never dropped it. It just appeared.

I called to get an estimate for replacement. It came back at around $600. Do I have any recourse with Apple?

Thanks in advance!

There was another macbook (pro/air - cant remember) owner that also swore he hadn't abused the laptop, but neverthess had a cracked screen. I wrote a response to him about 2-4 weeks ago - perhaps you can PM him to see if he managed to get it resolved.
