Yup, it's a defect. Mine spontaneously cracked in the summer. I didn't fix it because I live hours from an Apple store and had no interest in losing my laptop for a week in the mail. I stuck some tape over it. Life goes on.

just had a crack as well, one week out of warranty, out of country until end of year, will see if they do the right thing and replace it for free begin of january or if my next purchase won't be a macbook pro as initially planned.

Its bad apple quality, happens to lots if not most plastic macbook owners in they're lifetime. On the plus side, if you're in warranty they'll replace it for free.
They will replace it even if it is out of warranty. Mine was replaced about a year out of waranty.

I hope it doesn't happen to me, mines a 4th revision model so i might be ok.
So far, everyone I know with one pre 2008 has had the problem, everyone with a early 2008 model is fine thus far.

When did you get yours?

not true i had a early 2008 mb and had it crack.

I just had my MB crack on me. Can't afford to be without it for a week though so just going to deal with it. Just under a year old btw.

Just happened to my brother's today when he swiped his hand across the case. (This one was bought in Fall 07)

That EXACT crack happened to my wife the other week. I made a Genius appointment and had it fixed the next day before she got home from work. I'm "super" impressed with AppleCare right now. They even gave her a new keyboard.

March 2008 Whitebook here. I just got my MB from the second repair. They ended up screwing the top case on too tight on the back and indenting it the bottom case, it actually pushes out.

I called them about 5 mins after receiving the machine, had it noted. I'm not sure it's worth getting fixed until my top case cracks again. I'll discuss it when a genius in Clarendon when I got home in two weeks for break.

This has been a rather annoying flaw considering it should've been picked up during the design.
