I think it is awesome Craig replies to these folks.

It just makes me a tad uneasy that individuals then share their private email. Not the end of the world, but I would be happy with my email and keep it to myself out of respect for the sender. I'm probably just old fashioned in my thinking!

True, but I am sure that Federighi, Cook, and others are fully aware that their replies have a good chance of winding up on the 'net. It's PR.

Burn in issues probably.

That is easily remedied...All you have to do is have the clock move around the screen slowly... there' plenty of space on the screen to move it. They have screen savers like that.

My wife’s Samsung S7 has this, and it is super useful. We both use our phones as bedside clocks, only I have an iPhone 6 so I get no always-on display and the dock can be fiddly with the lightning connector. My wife gets the clock and has a tilted wireless charging pad. It’s brilliant.

This is a feature present on Nokia/MS Lumias since like forever. They always have the clock and notification icons on the screen. White color in the day, red at night. I have no idea why no other manufacturer copied this brilliant feature, the "glance screen".

It's off when the phone senses something in front of the sensor, like if it's in a pocket or held to the face, but as soon as you pick it out of your pocket, or charging, it shows this screen. Brilliant.

I've charged my phone in a stand for years. How is it no super common? There are tons of stands available on the market, I wouldn't so quickly dismiss the percentage of titled charging iPhones.

That you do doesn't mean everyone does. As for tons of stands, iPhone has a 550 million user base of, so even if 5 millions of stands would have been sold, it would still be nothing.

Well, now that it supports induction charging, there's lots of people that would like to have it charge that way.
And why isn't the article including the 8 and 8+ in this? (as they have the feature too)

The red is really, really smart. Isn’t too bright and doesn’t affect low-light vision like the radioactive green Apple puts on the Watch face for nightstand mode. Thats a major reason why I dont use it on the watch, its pretty bright in a dark room. Would prefer red and be able to adjust the brightness.

Well, kinda. Displays can do pixel orbiting or such to keep some semblance of your typical display to help avoid burn in. But that only makes a tight discrete burn in more of a smudgy burn in over time. To really get around that the phone would need to go into some sort of screen saver mode to even out the display. Either way, I would seriously doubt burn in to be an issue. We all know that the original owners will likely move on from these phones well before that is a serious concern and used phone buyers, well, you're buying a used phone. So choose one that look good :)

Return of the flying toasters!!

Green impacts dark vision recovery less than red. The mistaken belief that red is superior comes from red lights being used in black & white film darkrooms; that light was red primarily so that film was not disturbed, not human eyes.

On Galaxy phones Always ON Display is a really cool feature: digital clocks, currently playing music track, calendars, notifications... You can even take a note using a stylus. Samsung says that the Always On Display requires less than 1% of the battery per hour.

There are many more customization features and apps. A killer feature!

Pictured is 2-year-old device I think. Apple is always behind!

Green definitely lights up a room brighter than the red. We had a thread like this last year in the watch forum. I began using an all red modular face and it doesnt throw light across a dark bedroom at all. Nice when putting kids to bed, or when you’re in a theater or dark restaurant, etc...

I should email him and suggest that an Apple Music subscription should include upgraded iCloud storage. Apple has begun to nickle-and-dime us to death for their services.
They really need to adopt the Amazon Prime model. A one off annual or monthly fee that includes all services with the company. Bundle all their services together and charge one fee. It's Apple so it'll be more than most other companies fees but who wouldn't pay say $200/year to apple if that cost included AppleCare for all devices, iCloud storage, Apple Music, etc...

I didn't imply that green lights up the room any more or less than red. I made a comment based on your assertation that the green impacts your low-light vision recovery, which is the reason you stated for preferring red (you can check your original post on the matter). Now you state you prefer red because of the amount reflected from walls, which actually has more to do with the brightness of the light and the color of the walls; that's fine, I do not have anything to say about that and never did.

Also I do not contend that there was a thread here that discussed it, nor the findings. But a consensus does not trump scientific fact--unless of course you're discussing an opinion. And that does not really impact others' opinions, either!

p.s. correction to my post... red light has less impact on black & white print paper... I accidentally wrote "film".

How much do you want to bet the "screen always on when charging" option is missing on the X?
To be considered "missing", it has to have previously been present. iOS has never had a "screen always on when charging" option, unlike Android, which has always had such a feature.

Well, more accurately, a "only lock the screen while charging in response to pushing the button", because you can still manually turn off the screen, even with this feature enabled.

Not sure if you knew this, but the iPhone X uses OLED, not LCD.

BTW, OLED (and regular LEDs) use a phosphorescent material to create some colors (notably white), and that material breaks down with continued use. Unbalanced continued use causes uneven wear, and can result in image retention (burn-in).
I understand that, and I know that the article is talking about the iPhone X, but the features under discussion ("always on when charging" and "nightstand mode") are equally useful on the 8 (and IMO, all the earlier models) where LCD screens are present.

I will be very interested to see (in a few years) if Apple's OLED screens end up suffering burn-in. This could be a real problem for those of us who like to keep our phones until they actually fail (changing batteries as necessary during this time.) On the other hand, for people who replace their phones every year (e.g. via various trade-up programs from Apple and carriers), I would be surprised if a screen burns enough to be a problem over that much time.

The $1150 bedside clock.
o_O I hope people will be using their new iPhone X for more than just nightstand mode. :D

I've had my screen on all the time when charging for since my iPhone 5. I have no clue what you're going on about.

What, exactly are you talking about?

You can configure auto-lock for "never", but that means the screen never auto-locks, even when you're running on battery.

I am talking about an Android feature where the phone will auto-lock after a configured interval when on battery, but never lock when attached to a power supply.

If you believe iOS has this feature, please tell me how to enable it because I'm clearly too stupid to find it on my own.

Ah you are correct, my bad. I have my phone set to never turn off the display automatically.

I think they'll eliminate that option on the X. But who knows.
