fixed it for you! Wouldn't want to free him prematurely! ;)

Now if this guy is not leaving to retire. Then RIP Apple. Seriously, if Apple thinks I want my computer to resemble an overgrown iPad then they can loose my money and I'll be buying an Alienware.
Microsoft seem to be the only ones that still get computers? Apple has done brilliantly as well but I really do worry that they have an itch to dumb them down to ridiculous levels!!

Then again...... perhaps the man is leaving because he just is not comfortable with the talk from other employee's about where they want to take Apple after Mr Jobs leaves which is no doubt going to be very soon. I have a feeling they want to go in an entirely new direction..

IMO you don't leave a massively successful company after 22 years without a reason unless your retiring.

I'm sure Apple won't miss 'loosing' your money (seriously, why the hell can't people spell this word right), nor do they give a damn what you think, as they seem to understand what most people want, more so than any other company on the planet. I have the Lion beta installed, and it's by far their best release yet. Goodluck with the alienware.

He really is a character! Has a bit of that mad scientist/genius vibe to him.

First Jobs on an official vacation, jony seems to be rumored to be leaving for London, and now Serlet's gone. Man! must be something is wrong here...success getting into Apple's nerves?

3 unrelated events, followed by a stupid conclusion. Also..

1. Jobs has cancer, if you haven't noticed. He's on on 'vacation'. It's a health leave.
2. Ive isn't moving to London. The rumor has been discredited.
3. People get replaced all the time. No reason to think it's a bad thing. Lion looks awesome.

I wonder if Serlett's departure means more web focus since the new guy focused on the cloud? A new filesystem, being able to run web apps outside the browser, and a new UI would be nice for OSX… an internet layer built in using webkit (if that is possible) would be 3 nice new features, and with the new guy Ferengi or Fedenrigh or whatever… it could be possible?

Like OMG, I had the craziest thought! What if MacRumors had more articles about...Mac Rumors?! Whoa whoa wee wow, that would be so cool.

*Face Palm.

Boring stuff.

Exactly....so many articles about NON Mac stuff....like:
  • stores
  • employees
  • employee meetings
  • Steve's airport mishaps
  • cell phone company mergers
  • lines outside Apple stores
  • non-Apple tablet competitors info
  • Appstore announcements of what MR thinks are cool apps
  • Firefox updates
  • etc.

Mac? What Mac?

Hey, if MR wants to rename themselves to AppleRumors then I'm game. Until then, this site is getting to be a joke in regards to Macintosh rumors.

Upcoming articles we will surely see here:
  • broken vending machines at Apple headquarters
  • schedule of restroom maintenance at Apple
  • cars driven by Apple headquarter employees vs. retail store employees
  • Steve's weekly home trash bin "teardowns"
  • lines forming outside Apple cafeteria

The End Of An Era

Mr Serlet was the creative force that shaped their Macintosh Computer Operating System in it's various forms, until the present.

Today is a huge milestone in the history of Apple and the direction they are headed.

Thank You Mr Serlet, for your brilliant and exemplary service. You will be missed.

Adieu

Expected. He's been systematically selling off his stock for the past year or two, and he was one of the largest individual shareholders. Obviously he was going to retire or leave. Just check the records.

While I'd love to see more Mac related articles, it's not like MR is holding them back. The site has always been about Apple and Apple news. Apple has more than one product line now.

I know...but this place is called Mac Rumors...not Apple Rumors...and not Mac (and other stuff) Rumors. The site states "MacRumors.com is a website focused on Apple news and rumors. " but I would agree with a lot of other people that so much of this news is 8 degrees from truly Apple news. Firefox news? Come on. Lines forming at select Apple stores? Sheeez. Don't litter this site with QUANTITY...fill it with QUALITY.

Where is the Mac news that you're missing? Give us an example of a quality story that's been missed.

You know, I don't have an iPhone or an iPad. I'm mainly interested in Mac Pro news... but MacRumors isn't going to pay the bills by catering just to me. Those interested in iPhone and iPad news have a home here too, noisy crowd that they are. Be good to get many of them interested in Macs and other parts of the site, but that's another topic.

I like stories like this, by the way. May not comment on them that often, but still read them, nonetheless.

Probably saw the writing on the wall with Apple's recent 'Post-PC' direction, even more so with iOS's impending infiltration of Mac OS.

That's because, One) All the people you hear about are department heads, and when you're in charge of a segment of a large corporation you're typically a Vice President, and Two) Apple doesn't just throw people into a position as a filler. When you are put in charge of a division of Apple, you're there because you've done good things in the past and they expect you to be there for the long haul.

Yeah, but you hardly hear of a "President" of some department. It's like the two levels are VP and Senior VP. If there is a Vice, there should be a President, no? :)

The guy is the father of Mac OS

May i suggest Appleinsider

Serlet, is a pure (if you will) technical computer engineer... He get enjoyment about scientific computation, advanced algorithms, multi-threaded efficiency. The guy was nicknamed the "mad scientist" by Jobs himself, not because of his appearance, but because of he advanced studies in engineering and scientific computation.

He's like the man in the tech French community.

I can understand why he may want to leave, he's been gradually selling off his stock of Apple in recent years as well, so this makes sense.

Apple is more iOS then OS X and since Forstall heads the iOS development, there was no viable way Bertrand could have stayed on when Apple decided to merge the OS's.

I say it's a big loss for Apple. Though Craig should be a pleasant transition, and maybe a more frequent keynote speaker, since he's more understandable to the public.

Serlet will be missed. He's pretty much one of the Core brains behind OS X

Now if this guy is not leaving to retire. Then RIP Apple.

Good grief, here comes the "Sky is falling!" crowd

Seriously, if Apple thinks I want my computer to resemble an overgrown iPad then they can loose my money and I'll be buying an Alienware.

Have fun with that.

Words are not sufficient to respond to this gem.

IMO you don't leave a massively successful company after 22 years without a reason unless your retiring.

Everyone likes to try new things. 22 years is a long time. Most of us would like to drop what we're doing and try something new. Unfortunately, unlike Bertrand, most of us don't have the money to do it.

Its funny how every position at Apple is either a Vice President or Senior Vice President of something... hehe..

You only hear about VP or Sr VP leaving/going in the media because, well everybody below is not important.. You will understand what it means when you start working...

Maybe Apple was a bank in a previous life. :D

It's sad to see an "old timer" leave Apple, but I'm guessing that Serlet's financially set and wants to do some "pure" research at a university before he retires. Not everyone has that luxury.

It seems that OS X will be left in good hands, though.

I read somewhere he's perhaps not happy that iOS is gaining more influence over OS X. Certainly possible imo.

Craig was the main man behind Enterprise Object Frameworks 2.0 at NeXT. The Cloud has nothing to do with this succession. Craig is just the perfect person to take Bertrand's position. Bertrand will be missed and they couldn't have given the role to a more deserving person.

Have fun with your Alienware, be sure to have a backup generator on hand for the 12,000 LED's that thing has.

I hear battery life is 20 minutes.

PS: Why do people get their panties in a bunch when I say that certain articles are boring*?

because chiming in like that to an article others find interesting is a juvenile waste of time and bandwidth. its like... i think your mom's boring. relevance? none. nobody cares what random people on the internet think is boring.
