Lately, my MacBook Air from 2012 has begun crashing/freezing when watching videos from YouTube. Sometimes the computer becomes unresponsive (the screen freezes, but sound keeps playing), other times the screen shows weird artifacts - both forces me to do a hard restart.

Last time, the computer restarted by itself and gave me this report - can somebody help me figure out what causes the crashing/freezing? Is someone else experincing this problem? I'm afraid the crashing/freezing will begin occuring outside of YouTube as well which will leave me with a useless MacBook! This MacBook is my first and only Mac, so I don't have too much experience with them.

Here is the report that showed up open restarting:

I really hope someone can help me figure this out.

The report (Kernel Extensions in backtrace) shows that the graphics acceleration driver caused the crash. As you mentioned screen freezing and artifacts, it looks like your Graphics chip has a problem. As this chip is soldered on the logic board, it's time to contact Apple for a logic board replacement...

Uninstall Flash and try watching YouTube in HTML5. Maybe that will help?

Does it do this for other video streaming sites, such as Netflix, Hulu, etc.?

Thanks for the answers!

It only happens when watching YouTube videos. Netflix and Twitch is fine, haven't tried other streaming sites. But I will try your advice to see if it solves the freezing and crashing, thanks.

Uh, that does not sound good. I will try the advice mentioned above, and if the issue persists I will contact Apple.

I've uninstalled Flash, but it did not help at all I'm afraid. I tried using both Safari and Firefox as well without Flash, but that did not matter either.

I am not sure if it really is a GPU problem, since the problem only occurs when watching YouTube videos. I can use Netflix and I can watch movies using VLC with no problems at all. Very strange situation!

I've had weird freezing issues with my Mac too. I have a mid-2014 MacBook Pro. Though I don't have the artifacts you're talking about, I do get freezing on YouTube videos. When it happens, the entire Mac literally freezes over except for my mouse cursor. It's usuall after I clicked on a link from an email where someone had posted a reply to a video I had commented on. Then after it goes to the video, the video plays. I post a reply. Sometimes it freezes right then and there after I click "Reply" to post it, sometimes it freezes after I close the browser windows after I hit reply. But definitely only on YouTube. Nothing else causes the Mac to freeze like this.

Also, the freezing happens for about 30-40 seconds. Eventually it unfreezes, but refreezes at varying intervals. Only a hard reboot helps at that point. Also, started happening after upgrading to El "Crapitan".

Are you using Safari? I use Chrome on my 2015 MBP and have no issues at all with YT videos.

I am using Safari, but I also have Chrome installed and had Firefox installed as well (not anymore). I had problems with the system freezing in all three browsers. That said, Safari is my default browser and I had been using the others on occasion. So I may have assumed the issue to be with the other browsers as well where in reality it might have been Safari anyway. Who knows? This is extremely hard to pin down. I have since recovered by Mac from a Time Machine backup. The problem is still there. This happens a few more times, and I will resort to going back to Yosemite and using standard file copy. Problem then is, I'm going to have to redo all of my settings, apps, the iTunes Library (if that's even possible) and the Photos library. Yuck!

I've been working on this issue for a very long time. My latest thread is here on Apple Discussions. I've put a ton of detail over many posts there, so I won't list all the info here as well.

Chrome has not had this issue for me. Strictly Safari. I do not have Flash installed. I'm on a clean OS install.

After redoing my Mac and doing a TimeMachine backup and restoring form that backup, I essentially had the issue back on my Mac. And so I decided to use Chrome as my default browser and never touch Safari again. So far, I have not had any crashes anymore. It's definitely Safari, and I believe Apple needs to fix this ASAP.

HI. New member here. The evening I installed El Capitan 10.11.1 everything started going wrong. I haven't had a crash on my Mac Book Pro (2012) for years, but suddenly, nothing worked, the screen froze in the middle of a YouTube video and I had to do a restart. From then on, things got worse. I started having multiple crashes while steaming vids, then artefacts appeared jiggling all over the desktop - sometimes in black and white, other times in changing colours; these disappeared when I moved my cursor over them - IF my Air Mouse was still operable - which it was not at all times. I couldn't do anything except restart again. I was using Firefox. But it's the same with Safari. The change in reliability when streaming is like night and day, and it's all down to Apple not doing sufficient testing of their "El Crapitan".

I used to be co-owner of one of the UK's top interactive media developers, by the way, so I'm not whingeing about nothing. We tested every piece of software we created many, many times on all different platforms/browsers - even old ones with marginal public use. I am surprised that so many of your here sound so understanding of the mess Apple have made. I don't think these bugs are acceptable. AS someone who has been using Apples since the IIe, back in ancient history, I must say that I am flatly disappointed and depressed by how complacent the once adventurous, innovative and generally excellent Apple has become. I think more of us should be expressing that - and real anger - to Apple. They are are now world corporate fat cats, with multiple revenue streams, and maybe they have stopped caring about "the little guys" who were their champions and mainstays in the past.

Chrome for me was garbage! I installed it on my 2013 MBA. Eat tons of resources, but the worst part it installed Admalware to my MBA! Took me months to find an app to permanently remove the Admalware.

This is a Google thing. They bought YT, loaded it with ads up the wazoo, and decided a while back to drop support for systems older than a couple of years. I've got El Capitan on one of my systems and I hate it. Buggy, with great former features missing, dumbed down, counter productive changes, etc. That's why I keep my personal system on Mountain Lion. YT provides the message that my browser (Safari) is outdated and must be upgraded (same thing for the current version of FF, for some unknown reason) but you can't upgrade Safari without upgrading the entire system. Google wants to hose customers? That's what they do with just about everything, and they leave you no support other that FAQs. I have no love for Google.

(BTW — "macrumors newbie"? I've been a member since 2008.)

I have a MBA 13" mid2013. I had trouble with Flash on YT. Deleted Flash and I have no issues with YT or other streaming services.

I guess I don't have Flash on my mac, where can I find it exactly?

I really hope someone can help me figure this out.
[doublepost=1464797001][/doublepost]Hi. I had the exact same problem, and it is quite common with this vintage of laptop, apparently. I took mine to an SApple approved repairer in Coimbra, Portugal and the tests revealed that the graphics card had failed. Since the graphics card is wedded to the motherboard, the only remedy is to replace the whole motherboard at a cost nearly equal to the cost of a new computer. Apple made a big mistake doing this and now customers like us are paying. Naturally, it happened out of the original warranty period, so we are basically screwed. And you will find Apple very silent on this matter.

Hi C.N. Nope. No fan noise, no ventilation problem, just lots of artefacts, problems streaming videos, sometimes audio stays OK. I spoke at length to the repairers (Apple authorised) who said it is a very common fault and lies with the graphics card itself. Had it not been wedded to the motherboard, the repair would have cost a fraction of what they quoted. My laptop now sits in the spare bedroom unused, while my husband says, "It wouldn't have happened if you'd bought a PC, it wouldn't have happened if you'd bought a PC," like some demented parrot!

I mean, he's not wrong. MacBook Pro's have had this issue since 2011. Really shows you how ignorant Apple really is when it comes to issues like this.

It seems you're not the only one with problems with a Macbook Air 2012. I also sometimes experience crashes with videos from youtube as well where the audio stutters. I even get this weird screen distortion if i upgrade to El Capitan after waking it from sleep. Weird thing is that this doesn't happen in Yosemite but I still get system crashes from watching videos online sometimes. Apple Store couldn't figure out whats wrong but offered to repair the machine for $350, but was told its not a guarantee it would be fixed. I might as well sell my machine somewhere later and get a 2016 Macbook Pro with skylake.

I am surprised the last post on the subject is from early 2016. I just bought a macbook pro, top configuration (16GB RAM, i7), a mid 2015 model. Had this a few times, and today twice. How on earth can Apple afford to have such lingering issues? Should I have stayed with the PC?????
Very disappointing. No dissent system software, the PC has its own problems that caused me to switch.
Mediocracy everywhere... (From Amadeus :)
[doublepost=1468715577][/doublepost]I saw a flood of posts on the same problem, running up until recently. Everybody is frustrated. I think that a class action should be considered.

Hi Amadeus. I am not sure whether "dissent software" is something I've never heard of (my ignorance of such things constantly amazes me), or you meant "decent software"??? It is definitely "mediocrity" you need in the last sentence, but I'll say this: if the word "Mediocracy" doesn't exist, it should. Perhaps you've just invented it! We have all heard of "democracy" - which even at its beginning did not represent the will of all the people, and still does not. We've had "meritocracy", where capable people are allowed to rise to the top of the heap (has this ever happened?) and now the whole world faces having "Mediocracies" run by empty-headed, self-serving, bland non-entities who open their mouths and insert both feet. It isn't only Apple that is in trouble, my friend.
