Sorry if I'm a little late in posting here. I switched from AT&T to Verizon when I got the iPhone5. Never used 1 GB in any month on AT&T with a 3Gs. Used 2 GB in two days with the new iPhone on Verizon. After the first day, I thought maybe it switched to cell data when updating all the apps, but the second day was just the same and I was careful not to update apps... I just spoke with Verizon and they actually said it was likely a Verizon data reporting issue, not an iPhone issue. The detailed data report on MyVerizon adds up to far less than 2 GB...more like 1.3 GB (still high imho). Though the iPhone clearly has issues too, as it has me having received 4.1 GB....which is impossible. Otherwise, I love the phone.

Turn off iCloud backups. That was causing the issue for me. Seems at night iOS 6 drops wifi but still lets the backups run if phone is locked and plugged in.

I am an Engineer for a company that provides the back bone for verizon. I am not a genius and do not claim to know everything about apple, but I do know for a fact that verizon rate limits the hell out of unlimited plans. Verizon has sais this publicly. In other words they slow down the data. That is why a lot of people like my self who dont want the unlimited plan and don't mind paying a little more lte, but this is nuts. I am pretty sure this issue has to do with cloud back ups or with the lte having a higher priority over the wifi in certain situations. I am calling verizon and apple support today and will make sure they escalate my issue. I suggest u do the same and make sure u get a ticket number. I will be calling both companies several times a day untill my issue is resolved. Thats the only way this will get fixed. We will get this done, good luck guys.

Just call Apple. They don't read threads on macrumors.

I called Apple after seeing a similar discrepancy between the way iOS was reporting cellular data usage and the way Verizon was reporting cellular data usage. The tech initially chalked the discrepancy up to the fact that Verizon reports estimated data usage while iOS reports real-time data usage, but admitted that they had had several other reports of data discrepancies and that the engineer were looking into issues on their end.

On a side note iOS was reporting tethered data usage even though I've never use this phone as a hotspot. The tethered data usage showed up earlier this week but has since disappeared.

Forgot to add - The Apple tech did say it seemed to be affecting Verizon iPhones more than the other carriers

thanks what you call LTE! i can easily get 2gigs in 30 mins via my S3 on verizon.

I feel like the iOS data useage system is tracking wifi as well, at least part of the time... It says I've used 982MB while AT&T is saying I've used only 392.7MB as of 40 minutes ago (and I've been on wifi since that time, so that should be 100% accurate). That's a huge discrepancy. I don't feel like I spelled that correctly but my phone's not telling me it's wrong :p

I called Verizon, they confirmed I used over a gig in 3 days, before the iPhone 5, my average usage was 1 gig a month for the past 2 years. I turned off the cellular data on my phone for a day and Verizon recorded .24 gig usage. Verizon is now monitoring my phone to try and figure this out. This is affecting a lot of people if u check other forums. Per my conversation with Verizon, they are blaming the iPhone 5 at this point. This is affecting AT&T and Verizon uses thus far.
