Agreed. this is why i think this whole thread is dumb. If you are in AV, how in the world is your top priority "computer noise level" when picking a workstation.

gtfo.
By that logic: Why would it be a problem if your Studio display was delivered with 5 dead pixels out of the box if you work with audio?

I know it sounds crazy, but there’s currently no desktop Mac that meets my need as an audio/video producer.

Mac Mini (M1): Not powerful enough
Mac Studio (M1 Max/Ultra): Noise issues as per reported by multiple users
Mac Pro (Intel): Too old and too expensive

One option is to go with a Macbook Pro, but I don’t need/want to pay for the screen when I already have a 30” pro monitor on my desk.

So, the waiting game is on…

Edit: I should clarify that the M1 Max Studio would fit my needs perfectly, but the reported noise/whine issue is what makes me hesitant on the purchase. And I’m not talking about the (expected) sound from the fan.
2019 mac pro here, has been perfect

My very new (arrived a couple of days ago) Studio Ultra 64 is dead silent (40cm distant, under my monitor)... I hear more the mini fan of my Raspberry Pi that stays UNDER THE thick DESK to manage Home Assistant...
Very happy, as of now...

Sounds promising! Please let us know if things stay that way :)

Thought it was appropriate to do a short follow-up!

The just-released new Mac mini with an M2 Pro CPU is the absolutely perfect fit for my needs (primarily music production as well as web development and some occasional video production). Hopefully, Apple has simply built it on the same "old" tried and tested hardware design, so no unpleasant surprises emerge over time. Will buy!

Yep, it's a desktop I can finally replace my 2012 quad-core i7 Mac Mini with. Said older Mini already has the RAM maxed out to 16 GB and a 1 TB SSD (replacing the original hard drive), and I already have an M1 MacBook Air, so this M2 Pro Mini is the next logical step up; I'm gonna configure the order so it has 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD.

Studio Ultra owner (base model) here. There is fan noise but its very low. You won't hear it if its a few feet away. Also you can get sw app to lower the fan RPM. The curiosity with the studio is that the fan cooling system is so over-engineered. The thing is built like a tank.

Otherwise the front IO ports are nice and the performance is insane. From an end user perspective this computer is fantastic. I do wish the fan was less aggressive but its not something that would stop me from buying the machine.

Hey! If you don't mind me asking...Which Mac mini M2 Pro config are you going with for music production? Also, what does your music production needs/requirements consist of? I'm holding out still for a Mac Pro, but the CPU multicore on the M2 Pro is pretty good so far from what I see!

Of course :) I've been using the Mac Mini M1 for two years now (got it from work), and it's so powerful – even with 8 CPU cores and 8GB of RAM. However, it does max out frequently with Logic Pro throwing error messages, especially when I'm working on big projects with loads of tracks and plugins and then trying to do some multitasking with Word, Safari or whatever. So, I've decided to go with the base M2 Pro model (10 core CPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD). It's such a good deal. And for storage I have a 2TB external USB3 SSD. So, I figure that should cover my needs close to perfectly. Had it not been for the current inflation and crazy energy prices here in Europe, I would definitely have gone for 12 core CPU, 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD. But, on the other side, that would actually, probably, be overkill.

I've been considering the same, don't know whether its worth going up to a 1TB though. Last time I had a macbook I only had 512 and I told myself I'll definitely get a 1TB next time. But I didn't have an external SSD so I was always going to run out if installing samples etc 😬

Yeah, that would be my dream machine (given that it doesn't exhibit/develop the whistling noise) – had I had the money :)

I hear you! However, after getting my external 2TB SSD, I run all samples from that drive, and it works perfectly (I was worried about this before I tried it). I've got everything from Native Instruments Komplete (Collector's Edition) to Spectrasonics Omnisphere 2 stored on it. 6 months in and still not a single problem. And in addition, it reduces the usage on the internal SSD in the Mini, presumably making it last longer.

Is it easy to change the samples directory to a different location? I always felt it easier to stick to the default, and when trying to move things about things tend stop working.:(

Yes, it's definitely easy, in my experience. At least nowadays. The different developers have different software tools that handle this exact situation. 5-10 years ago, it was, however, much less streamlined.

Just an update in order to avoid loose ends 😊

I ended up buying the new M2 Max Mac Studio instead of the Mini. Wow! Amazing machine so far, and I simply can’t hear it from a normal working distance (it’s sitting on the desk just below the monitor in front of me). Finally the perfect Apple computer for my current needs! 😊

It’s good to hear your update. But I struggle to understand why you didn’t try a Mac Studio in store initially to hear if there was any noise issue. I’m sure some people have had genuine noise issues, but most haven’t. Don’t believe everything in MacRumors as being general issues.

I understand your question 😊 The M1 Mac Studio seemed to sometimes develop the whine over time, and the fan noise was significantly louder than the M2 equivalent. Apple seems to have fixed (most?) stuff now. Of course, it remains to be seen whether the M2 Studio can develop whine noise over time - but so far no reports that I know of.
