Are you asking which mac software to use to create your own ringtones/sms tones? Or you need a full guide?

Neither. I'd make one.

This is for Windows and the Mac one is far easier. :)
the process is the same for macs as it is on PC just download the MAc client for Redsn0w
Not talking redsn0w. I'm pretty versed in iPhone Forensics. :)

I meant making the actual ringtones via Garageband to help Mac folks. :)

If you feel up to it you could write a guide yourself :D

One step easier - use iTunes to edit and export aiff :) Not as advanced as Garageband, but easier for novice...Also, Fission and Amadeus Pro will do the job, both aren't free though..

You did a good job with this one and I didn't want to steal your thunder. :)

thank you, though i would not consider it you stealing my thunder say if we took all the guides and merged into one giant "HOW TO GUIDE" post.

cause i also have a ringtone guide but my guides never got stickied so people never see them unless i update them :p

How is it done for Mac?

just import the song you want nto garage band trim it down then click the share menu and send to itunes then in itunes create a aiff version rename to .caf and follow the ssh guide

Jailbroke my iPhone 3G for this exact reason. I find it ridiculous that you can have custom ringtones but not custom SMS ringtones.

Thanks for the guide

Awesome. I've been waiting so long to have the Metal Gear codec as my SMS ringtone.

Great guide!

How can I convert a file with the extension .m4a to use as an sms tone (mac)? I've been trying with no luck...

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm just an idiot. I got it.

Thanks for the guide. I've got a Super Mario sound thing going on. Here is the SMS sound I am using for anyone who wants it.

make sure you name it exactly as the one you are replacing, so if you are replacing sms-received6.caf the rename the file to sms-received6.caf

also try turning your phone off then on again, and also check that your mute swith isnt on :p

Your guide is simply too long and I don't want all of that software on my PC. Don't be a cheap skate and just buy the ToneFXs app from the Cydia store. You can create tones not only for SMS, but emails, voicemails, keyboard clicks, unlocking from lock screen, and calendar alerts. The sounds for each of these things can be created using any music file in your library. Simply click the song you want to use, select the start and finish times (yes you can preview what it will sound like), and then click "send to phone". The software installs the tones on your phone. You can then go into the ToneFXs app on your phone and customize your ringtones and sounds any way you like.

This is a very useful app for anyone that doesn't want to go through the hassle of downloading a bunch of software and wants full customization options. Well worth the $5 I paid.

Matt, are you able to add more than the 6 tones that you are able to load using the method described in the beginning of this thread using ToneFX?

I am very new to apple (only had them a week) and have a MBP and an iPhone 3g. Im looking to customise the SMS tones and i can see you have to jailbrake the phone. Mines still under warranty and im dubious to go through all this just for the tones. I hacked my old Nokia and it died after 5 mins. Is the process safe and warranty friendly and Mac compatible?

Very easy.

Go to iClarified and get a guide for your Mac/3G phone and whatever firmware version you are on.
