It completely freaked out my roomate and he couldn't handle it. After a few days he just grabbed the jar and violently shook it until the spider was dead. His reasoning was, "I could tell by the way that thing was looking at me that it was going to escape and bite me in my sleep."
This is EXACTLY the way I would feel, and what I would do :p

When I lived in Tennessee I went out one day to take out the trash. The garbage can was turned over where the trash man had left it upside down after emptying it. I nonchalantly reach down, grab the handle, flip it over, and set it down. To my surprise there was a huge spider web spun the entire span of the trash can about a foot down from the top. Sitting proudly and without fear in the middle of the web was a plump Black Widow spider. That was the first and only time I've ever seen one in person. My relationship with creepy crawlies ranges from fascination, to fear, to apathetic avoidance depending on the circumstances. Well, seeing this poisonous spider up close was just too cool.I went back inside the house and found an empty jar. I poked some holes in the top, went back outside, and captured the little bugger. We put some flora down inside and actually killed some flies that we stuck in the jar as food. It completely freaked out my roomate and he couldn't handle it. It was a cool experiene. :)

Umm..why didn't you guys just let the spider go? That all seems a bit weird and morbid. "Hey dude! I killed a spider in a jar!" "Cool!" No- not so cool.

I wanted to keep it for a while and then let it go. My roomate was the one with the phobia who freaked out and killed it without me knowing. He confessed after I found it dead in the jar. While I wouldn't have done the same thing I kind of understand in that I do see how it's not wise to have a "pet" that can kill you. The "cool" part was getting the experience of seeing such an interesting insect up close and personal. Don't worry Lee, there was no enjoyment gained by the murder of the arachnid. I'm sorry I wasn't more clear, but my feelings are hurt that you would think such about me. :( ;)
