Wow, that was good resale on the 16" MBP!
I can't seem to let my 1 year old base i7 6 core 16" MBP - it's quoting $1260 on Apple trade in !

Can't do that low after spending $2500 including AppleCare+ ! :(
yeah with AppleCare+ you definitely want to sell privately. The added value of AC+ to any trade-in is exactly $0. I think if you can get anywhere close to $1600 I would pull the trigger.

Apple made e-waste inevitable when they effectively made the battery a non-serviceable part by consumers. For phones it made sense, but there’s not much justification for it in a laptop even if you need a screwdriver to do so. Probably does help sell new units and professional change services though.
It's up to the consumer with every purchase.

Blaming it on the company is self-effacing, but that's my perspective.

If you have enough wealth to buy an Apple machine, you have enough wealth to be environmentally consious.

The choice is always yours, not the companies.

M1 killed the re-sale value of the Intel Macs...hard to take it in if you just purchased (within a year or so) one and now are considering the M1.

I thought something like this would happen so I traded in my 2016 15” 2.7GHz i7 / 512GB / 16GB for $710 on Day One of M1 sales. Figuring that config has plummeted now as well

I'd sell it on craigslist ASAP. Not everyone will be hip to the m1 changes yet. I never understood why people do trade-ins instead of privately selling unless they don't live near a populated area or don't want the extra time investment. You'll get nearly double what Apple will offer you.

I've sold my last 3 Macs on CL and it has been a total breeze. Local only, cash only, meet at a coffee shop and done.

Good luck, it's worth it.

Yeah, but that attitude does result in a lot of eWaste, which I try to avoid.

I understand that everyone else won't have this as a priority, but I, and my family, will.
Or... upgrading and trading/reselling the used device enables others with less financial means to obtain and enjoy a Mac when they might otherwise be unable to do so.

I kinda doubt very many here would throw a functioning MacBook into the trash.

It was my post he quoted, my way, as you indicated, literally ensures a new device isn’t created. But, I’m not going to change his mind, he already passed judgment on me, and those folks are usually immune to others ideas.

My argument is that you're personally responsible for twice the eCO2 as you bought two new machines.

The trash argument is a logical fallacy.

I'm not passing judgement and even if I were would it matter. You're acting somewhat defensive, so perhaps it would?

Regardless, I don't know you and I'm just evaluating your post as I would evaluate my own behaviour. Notice that I didn't slander you but am simply offering my opinion.

I'm simply stating my interpretation of your actions. If that's causing burden on you, you might not want to post them publicly.

Not buying it. You're the preacher type. You took one look at my innocuous comment and decided to pounce with your agenda. I've been around on forums since the BBS dial up days. I know your type. And easy enough to put in the ignore file.

That's cool. No skin of my back. You're only upset because you know I'm correct and refuse to engage in a reasonable discourse. BBS for me was via a C64 and a separate phone line. My uncle worked at DEC on VAX and got me set-up.

You wrote "eWaste" in the post I replied to - not "eCO2" - and thereby brought trash into the thread.

Maybe don't commit a "moving the goalpost" fallacy while fallaciously accusing someone else of a logical fallacy? :p

Apple today, more so than in the past, is a maker of devices. Buy what you need for today, don’t overspend on “future proofing” unless you have excess cash that you want to burn.
this seems to be the case but is an M1 or M2 can do everything your heart desires, whats the point of upgrading. if its eating through 8k raw easily, why upgrade unless you really need the videos to output a few minutes faster? we have reached that point it seems and in 3 years any used Mac will be a great one. I got the M1 and am debating on keeping it because ill kick the wall if apple released better, larger panels in 6 months. After all thats what we look at.

Wow. Applied for a trade in last night and locked in the $700 price. Lucky. Hopefully they honor that.

Edit: Actually, the price is still the same for me: $710 for a late 2016 MBP 2.7ghz 16gb RAM 512gb HDD. Just checked.

That is fair enough, I seem to have derailed this conversation inadvertently, and incorrectly, in tandem.

Too many things going on in parallel.

13 or 16?

that makes sense since it's the larger model. I ordered the M1 tonight wit 16GB Ram. Doesn't deliver until the 23rd of December so gives me time to think about it and keep the trade price locked in. If i could find a viable charging brick I might consider it, I am literally getting about 3-4 hours from full charge to empty on web surf, air pods, mail open, youtube, which is ridiculous.

I don’t mind the drop value of my 2018 mbp because I can get a significant speed upgrade even with a $999 base m1 air.

Especially now the m1 air has a better wide gamut screen like the mbp so I can do design work even with the air.

I just flipped my base 16” for $2000 CAD.

Just remember that AC+supposedly can be canceled with prorated refund.
