Maybe they are fans of Speed 2 and wanted keep the sister ship as memorabilia.

Speed 2 was the stupidest movie ever. I saw about 1/2 of it on TV and it looked really stupid. "Hey! Lets go swim under the propeller of the cruise ship and try to stop it with a rope while trying not to get sucked into it"

"We have a pirate on our team?" ~Dodge Ball
"Gar, I'll be on the stair master" ~Dodge Ball

Actually, I really wish my initial response to this thread was "Garrrr. :("

These pirates are a real plague. I have a friend who has a boat and travel around the world. Pirates are very frequent and attack small boat everyday. And no, its no fun, they generaly dont kill people because it would bring too much attention on them. Insted, they rape the crew (female that is) and steal everything on board and sometime they even get the ship and leave the passenger in a life ratf.

So no, pirates arent fun...

Unfortunately, it's probably cheaper to have an occasional load of cargo jacked, than it is to outfit a fleet of ships with anti-piracy equipment.

Why won't you license Fair-Play, Apple? WHY? Please dont leave the high seas up to Microsoft to defend. They cant even code a proper operating system. :D

A couple I know are on that very ship, it'll be interesting to hear the story first hand when (if) they get back.

I agree.

The water canon idea is an excellent one, especially if it's a small boat like the one pictured above and it's in a shark infested sea.

Feeding the sharks would probably be the only useful thing that these miscreants would end up doing.

No, like this:

From today's Dagbladet (Norwegian paper), which reports that the pirates were repelled by using a sonic gun, an LRAD, which "shoots" sounds of up to 150 db at an attacker.

What did they intend on doing by attacking a cruise ship 10000x bigger than their boat.

These pirates look like amateurs. I've lost what little respect I had for them. Of course, if pirates looked like Johnny Depp, then I might go willingly. :p

(pirate voice) Gar me maties. They call themselves pirates. Jelly fish's tentacles!

Now this is a real pirate ship

Well, you come a long way with (what seems like) an AK-47 and a rocket launcher, so if they'd managed to get aboard they might have caused some mayhem among the tourists... but I would guess the crew would have blown them out of the water if the sound gun hadn't repelled them. I wouldn't operate a cruise ship anywhere without a heavily armed crew, just in case of these situations... ;)

I'm sure even a lightly armed crew (semi-auto or bolt-action rifles and handguns) would be enough to scare off a few pirates. I doubt they'd want to risk bodily harm to themselves when there's easier prey nearby.

I especially enjoyed this part of the article:

"One of the rockets certainly hit the ship - it went through the side of the liner into a passenger's suite. The couple were in there at the time so it was a bit of an unpleasant experience."

A bit of an unpleasant experience? I think it would be quite an unpleasant experience to have a rocket grenade shot into my room while I'm in there!

Proof is definitely required with this outrageous claim...:D

You'll be pleased to hear they made it back OK.

They said as far a defenses go the ship had a couple of security guards that were (former I assume) Gurkas. One of them took a shot in the shoulder but nothing too serious.

The main defensive action appeared to be the captain puting the cruise ship very hard about and gunning the engines which sent a wash from the ship that the pirates little boat seemingly couldn't handle.
