Trains here aren't like trains there.

At the busiest, he would have 20 minutes to get the phone.

(10 February 2004, New York) Exactly three weeks later, 18-year-old Lina, of Queens, jumped onto the subway tracks to retrieve her new cell phone just as the V train was rounding the corner into the Grand Avenue station. She apparently expected to hop right back up onto the platform, five feet above the tracks, but after two attempts, she was still stuck. As the lights of the oncoming train shone in the tunnel, two men tried to pull her up, but she was knocked out of their hands as the train rushed into the station, emergency brakes squealing. She died along with her cell phone.

Sorry to hear about what happened. At least you didn't make a bad situation worse, by trying to go after it. Hopefully you will get it replaced soon.

Ok, so I just got home from the SoHo store and got my new iPhone 4. Same as my last one and I had no choice but to pay full pricing ($599+tax). Thank you to everyone who helped me figure that out! :D

Anyone suggesting that you should hop down on the tracks to grab a phone clearly doesn't live in a city. Even if you don't die you're more than likely to be arrested.

Small price to pay to be among the living here. :)

Not sure how it would have played out in NYC or even here in DC.. just wonder given that lag time between some trains - could we use the emergency call boxes on the platforms to request retrieval of our dropped cellphones on the tracks? Or is the 20 minute delay during non-rush hour timing between trains that critical to system timing? Hell non-rush hour I would have paid $50 to $100 blood money to the DC Metro to save upwards of $500!

Take the pieces to an apple store and claim that the phone malfunctioned.

.. to pieces.

Ouch, what a heavy penalty just for a slight slip. Step back from near the platform edge next time?

But won't you get shocked if you touch a train track?

On the LIRR line there are 3 rails to a track. Two of them will not shock you when touched its just for the wheels to ride and be guided on but the 3rd rail will kill any living thing if touched. The third rail is a method of providing electric power to a train.

Man... if I were the engineer on a subway... it'd be so rad watching all that darkness and... stuff.

I'd always get to pretend I'm Bruce Wayne taking the hidden route to the bat cave, it just never shows up =\ But the rumbling would sure simulate my ROCKET POWERED BATMOBILE! Vreeeeeeeeeeeee schwoooooom!!!
