Oh please. Every time iMessage is used it communicates with Apple's servers to exchange some keys. The key in question is most likely provided by the server anyway. The only difference would be that today the key provided by the server is not the same as yesterday.

The FBI figured out that the same person did something highly suspicious, and then made an entirely harmless purchase on iTunes. They asked Apple for the address, with a search warrant obviously, and Apple provided the FBI with the address of that purchaser. And Apple knows who you are when you purchase on iTunes - for example, Apple always sends me an email with my recent iTunes purchases, so obviously they have my email address.
