At the glass factory.
(sorry I couldn't resist)

I meant where does Apple manufacture glass. Steve made this statement according to the article: " We've used our experience making retail buildings all over the world now, and we know how to make the biggest pieces of glass in the world for architectural use. And, we want to make the glass specifically for this building here. We can make it curve all the way around the building... It's pretty cool."

Or does he mean that Apple engineers are glass experts and know how to design and manufacture glass? He's implying that no one else knows how to make pieces of glass as big as Apple does for architectural use.

Oh OK. So the shareholders are happy to fork over billions every year for the right to say "Designed by Apple in California?" Does anyone care where their computer was designed? If they do then they are buying for the wrong reasons. The only thing that matters is 1. Does the product work 2. Does it work well 3. Do I need/want it. 4. Am I willing to pay the asking price. I fail to see how the geographical origin of the design fits into this equation.

Bottom line, in time, when Apple is experiencing another dip in demand (this will happen again someday ppl) and California taxes are even higher the shareholders will start clamoring for a move to another state or overseas. This will likely be the last building in California that Apple will call home.

p.s. who in the world cares where Steve Jobs grew up or went to school? Do the shareholders care? Does Steve Jobs own 100% of the stock?

This will likely be the last building Apple calls home period, this is their mothership, they will be in this location for at least the rest of the 21st century. Unlike many corporations, Apple actually cares about their company's heritage and culture, and their roots are in Cupertino. I doubt there will be a dip in demand any time soon, they are the ultimate business turnaround story of the century. This building won't be done until 2015, Apple ain't going anywhere anytime soon, face it. And as for Steve, he IS apple. Apple is his baby, he founded it and made it what it is today, and people do care about that. The shareholders don't call all the shots (if any when it comes to Apple). So no, Apple headquarters won't be coming to your local trailer park any time soon, sorry.

A temporary smudge on the planet's crust to celebrate our throw-away culture. Throw away some more indentured workers Apple, as they piece together more useless crap under slave conditions. Wow, look at the share price! The height of human achievement!

....you done? You should read that one at poetry night at your local coffee house and then go home to your shiny new MacBook Air.

It's not sorry to me pal, I don't own Apple stock. And that was a beautiful little story, BTW.

I love to be one of the chefs there in the cafeteria feeling all those Apple employees. That would just be one of the most awesome jobs ever. I'm make sure they all ate the best food ever.

looks like they're going to build some extra features against earthquakes, at least for the ring-building (-> foundation)

This could easily be the next wonder of the world. I would love to see this building in person!

Yeah..... right.
Great Pyramid of Giza
Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Statue of Zeus at Olympia
Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus
Colossus of Rhodes
Lighthouse of Alexandria
Apple's spaceship campus.

Yeah that fits right in

.....I sure hope something to get out of this life sucking job...
As someone that went to school to be a teacher (later making the move to medicine) I say you need to quit your job right now so your "life sucking job" doesn't interfere with the lives of the unfortunate children that are placed in your class. The profession you have chosen is a big responsibility and it sounds like you're not up to the task.

Compare this design with Microsoft's campus. Their campuses reflect their individual personalities... and a reflection of their products/style.
Microsoft - big, boring, typical, etc.
Apple - innovative, unique, wow factor, etc.
fanboyism at it's finest!

Ok, this is freaking apple here, with the most awesome modern building in the world, with no straight edges... Do yo really think that they will have straight edge furniture against that beautiful glass, to obstruct the view of that beautiful landscape?
Most awesome modern building in the world? You don't get out much do you? Here are a few examples to broaden your architectural horizons:

I know none of these examples are "round" but all as spectacular as the "spaceship" will be.

Best post on this thread IMHO! Honest and not reeking of apple fanboy lust for all things apple.

I think it looks nice and will bring some media attention to apple when it's done. I just giggle at all the folks coming in here ejaculating over this thing...... It's just a building built by men with modern tools and engineering. You want true awesomeness? Explore the buildings/monuments that were built by HAND then you will really see some awesome achievements.

Could have guessed it was a Foster & Partners. A very eccentric team, meant to be very hard to work with but implement extordinary architecture. I also guess it's time I apply to ARUP America....

I agree, it's pretty cool. :)

But Apple is really just about Form Over Function

The problem with round buildings is you can't simply put a rectangular shaped object flat against the wall, thus wasting a lot of space. Also what if I need to get to the opposite end of the building but it is raining out so I can't walk through the court yard? I have to walk all the way around the building!

While it sure does look wonderful I would say it is very much form over function.

Why would Apple not treat their office building the same way they do their products. All their products are built for form first & then they try to do the function after that. Sometimes they really lack in function because of the restrictions of the form.

weird logic ahoy
I have no idea if you are serious or just a troll, you seems to be really really immature "ooooee no someone prefer Apple´s new campus over Microsoft, better call him a fanboy", "fanboy fanboy fanboy", come on, i usually think people that call other people for "fanbois" are the lowest life form on earth but you take the cake. It is soooooooo horrible that people like Apple products and ooooh the poor humanity if someone actually like Apple´s new campus....................................

With Apple, form IS function.

But I really love the design of this building.

& LOL @ the people criticizing it for what it is. If you tree huggers actually watched the town meeting with Steve Jobs, you'd see that they have plans to restore wild life around the campus.

What did that site look like when hp or whoever had it?

Most awesome modern building in the world?

My favorite modern architecture structure is the Aqua Tower in Chicago.

Are there Apple employees currently working in the buildings on this property?

Where will they go when the bulldozers come... and for the next 4 years until the spaceship finally gets completed?

How do they keep the sun out of this building? Curved blinds? Even more special glass that blocks the sun with the click of a button/app?

Are there Apple employees currently working in the buildings on this property?

No, it is a largely empty old HP campus now.
What many folks here are quite gripping is that there is lots of empty commerical real estate in Silicon Valley right now. Tons. This building is really more about putting people closer together than it is "there is no place to house them".

There is lots of space for Apple to expand into, it just isn't all withing short walking distance from each one. Apple will probably close out the older, more expensive leases first and move many of those folks into the "space ship" along with the execs (who will all probably get newer, fancier offices). Some more mainstream infinite loop folks will move over too (and again the more distance, expensive leased space will collapse into emptied infinite loop space).

Also what if I need to get to the opposite end of the building but it is raining out so I can't walk through the court yard?

Easy .... basement tunnels. Only need a 4 spoke hub to make doing diameter moves from certain locations go faster.

the design doesn't show paths through the inner courtyard either .... which there probably will be for when it isn't raining. However, that inner surface isn't going to be paved... even outside it isn't going to be a "straight line" walk across the diameter.

Making the building taller has seismic implications. Also not going to blend into surroundings as much. This isn't a "in your face" design. won't be suprising if can't see bulk of the building from I-280 once the trees have grown into place.

...look the box that crawled out of is labeled "Massengill"!!!

Yeah..... right.

Thanks for the info.

After some digging... I found that there are 2,500 Apple employees working at 1 Infinite Loop... but Apple has 12,000 more employees spread out all over the Bay Area.

It looks like the spaceship will finally have most employees under one roof. That's gonna be very efficient.

A tiny bit over the top. From the purple prose it-was-a-dark-and-stormy-night school. ;)

I'm not criticizing content. I respect your beliefs even if I don't agree with their intensity.

Just a little too much heavy breathing...

Apple employee efficiency slows to a halt as the employees realise spaceship windows and glossy Apple displays don't mix.
