Ideally, I'd like to be able to get all notifications on the watch and only on the watch whether the phone is on or not, except when I'm not wearing the watch. Then then can go to the phone. I only take off the watch at night when I'm sleeping, so normally the second part isn't an issue, except I prefer to be able to receive phone calls at night in case there is an emergency or for when I'm on call for work.

Yes that is exactly what I would love as well. My exact situation too.

Yes phone calls. And I thought it did it with text messages too before but I could be mistaken about that, as now thinking back my phone has been sitting next to me all day at work but hasn't vibrated with texts. But that could be because I am on my mac getting them through Messages. And if I don't switch to messages right away after a minute or so my watch taps me but phone doesn't vibrate.

My phone rings with any incoming calls, as well as the taptic notification on the watch, so that makes sense.

I believe message notifications only go to the active device, and that's the experience I've been having.

I tried one day with sound on, but quickly realised it was unnecessary. The real joy for me has been being able to have my phone silent too. I always worried about missing a message beep in the past and had the sound cranked right up - but no more!

I really wish there's a way to silent when I get to work and then un-silence when I leave. Right now it's a routine I have to do twice a day :(

V1.0 of course.

I silenced it for the first time tonight to watch my girls School concert and yes it told me to get up and move and yes I wish I could have but it was a great concert nonetheless :)

Had it on silent for the first few days. Then forgot to turnn on mute one day and realized that I actually quite love how the alert tones they use matches the product (especially on the stainless steel casing, sounds like someone's striking the metal, lol). So have been leaving it on now except in meetings.

So the sounds are different for an aluminium watch? I wonder what gold sounds like.

I had the sounds on for the first two days — they were nice, but I've kept it muted since. There are different sounds for turning left and right when it gives directions (just as there are different tap patterns).

Yeah, I'm particularly into that. The tap on the wrist coinciding with the ring makes it like the thing was a bell for a moment that somebody struck.. to slip into Jony Ive mode for a moment... visceral :D

Just curious as to whether anyone else keeps their watch on silent. I've had mine on silent since I first set it up, because I prefer not to have it make noises throughout my workday, etc., and the taptic notification works well for me. From the posts I've been reading, it seems like I'm in a minority here and I'm wondering how everyone else deals with the notification sounds? Does it interrupt meetings, etc?

I quite like the audio of apple watch. It's not so loud that you can hear it 2 rooms away, and it doesn't blow your ear off when it rings and it's only 2 feet from you. It all seems a bit more subtle in volume than other Apple products. Even at its loudest.

I keep the volume on unless it needs to be off I.e. Meeting or such.

Mine has been on silent since I set it up, since I can't have anything making noise in meetings at work. I just realized I have no idea what kinds of sounds it makes. I love the haptic feedback.

Sounds are off for me. I go by taptic only.

Keep mine on silent too. Hate the tone on the watch. A lot of people in the office have the same tone set on their phones, shame the watch doesn't have a unique tone. Being able to use the custom tones from your phone would be nice too!

Ideally I would still have my phone still make a noise but unfortunately that's not currently possible.

I've got mine on silent, and frankly being able to get notifications without sound effects (or indeed anything audible at all, since taptic notifications are silent) is one of the big draws for me. In fact, I hadn't realized until just now that I no longer get audible email notifications on my phone either while I'm wearing the watch, which I'm perfectly fine with.

I did try out the sounds for a bit, and thought the sounds for the left and right turns during navigation were kind of cute.

No the sounds are the same no matter the model. But from an visceral experience point of view as iamasmith also mentioned, the high pitched bell tone paired with the tap just seemed to have been designed to fit the stainless steel look of the watch perfectly.

It's silly to be honest, but I had the aluminium for a week and didn't think much of it, and it wasn't until I wore the stainless steel that I understood what I presumed is the design thought process behind the tones.

I would only turn off silent when at home, the sound and the taptic kind of go well together. I don't want to disturb people with all the notification sounds so everything on silent when I'm not home. And with the taptic feedback I'm not worried about missing a call anymore.
