64bit on iMac and Macbook Pro.

The 2Ghz c2d Mac Mini I got unfortunately doesn't support 64bit even tho it's got the hardware. Felt so ripped off.

In fact, the only big advantage of booting into a 64-bit kernel would be the ability to use more than 32 gigabytes of RAM.

4 GB, not 32 right?
2^32 - 1 = 4294967295 the last time I checked.

Or did I miss something?

64 bit on the MacPro (I have some little program that boots in 64 bit automaticly) and 32 bit on the Air  and no problems on either machine.

Maybe you should read more about OWC's testing. In their testing the System recognized the 64GB of ram, but due to a couple of technical issues such as the intel chipset which cannot utilize more than 32GB, and by their own results the system never used andy ram beyond 32GB, and OS X will cannot access ram beyond 32GB also. So sure they crammed it in there and yes the firmware counted it and reported that number to OS X, but is it useable no. So I guess you guys are right Apple doesn't know what they are talking about and you guys do. So you might check out Intel's, OWC's, and Apple's technical documentation in the future. And you are right it does work just fine just as fine as 32BG.

In OWC's testing, they state that the issue you described occurs only when booted into the 32-bit kernel and that 64GB can be used when in the 64-bit kernel.

All I have to say is show me the link, the report I read did not say that but even if it did OWC could be mistaken, I'll still defer to the facts from Intel and Apple about the hardware and software they designed and what it is capable of. All I can say is wow just wow two guys on the internet and a ram vendor know more about Apple Hardware and Software than Apple and Intel. And also the point of the original post was about 32bit vs 64bit not the hardware capability of $13,899.00 fully loaded Mac.

To utilize over 32GB of memory in your Mac Pro under 10.6.x or greater, you must boot into 64 bit mode. In 32 bit mode, all installed memory will show in system profiler but only up to 32GB will be actively used by the computer.

You should really go back to elementary school...

If you boot into 32 bit mode, 64GB will be shoen but only 32GB can be utilized (=used). When booted into 64 bit mode all 64GB WILL BE UTILIZED AND CAN BE USED!

64-bit kernel on Hackintosh

I'm running 64-bit on my Hackintosh. And it screams. It is by far the fastest Mac I have ever owned and built it for $600. Not the best mac I have ever owned as that prize goes to my 27" iMac (running in 32-bit mode, I believe).

You got me I miss read it.

But I'm going to quit this discussion you and OWC are apparently far more knowledgeable than Apple and Intel and I do have some kindergarden to get to.

We are never going to agree it's obvious you have your side which hasn't changed and I have my side that hasn't changed. You have your facts which haven't changed and I have mine.

I have enjoyed the discussion, and the readers of these post will have to decide for themselves as to weather OWC or Apple is correct we have made our points we have nothing more to offer as the tone indicates. And in my eager attempt to use your own words against you I misread and I am quite mad at myself for that.

The fact that you nor I can actually perform our own tests to see for ourselves makes me think we might not be the ones for this fight.

I have sent an e-mail to OWC asking them for proof in the form of independent verification, and or photographic evidence if they get back to me I will post the photos no matter what they show and if they send me a document from a third party I will post it regardless of the outcome. If they do not respond at all I will take that as proof that their claim cannot be supported not necessarily false just unsupported. I don't expect a reply.

So I will leave it here OWC says you can install 64GB of RAM in the MacPro, Apple and Intel say you can only install 32GB in the MacPro. Which is right I leave that to the reader.

If you have more to add I welcome it, your move and my last unless I find more to add that actually adds something.

*64bit* rocks!

I think its much faster than 32bit mode. I really see a difference in VMs I use. VMware supports 64bit and so does VirtualBox. I'm sure Parallels does as well but I haven't used it in a long time.

Yes. 32 bit Kernel means that the Kernel itself can only use 4 GB of address space for its own operation. But the Kernel has no problems detecting that there are 32 GB of RAM, and assigning say 20 GB of address space to a 64 bit application wanting 20 GB of address space. Just like a 32 bit operating system has no problems supporting hard drives that are bigger than 4 GB, and supporting files greater than 4 GB.

It's like going to the bank and asking for a million dollar loan to buy a house, and the bank manager can give you that loan, even though he doesn't make a fraction of that money himself. Just like a bank manager can give you a loan that is ten times more than his own salary, a 32 bit Kernel can handle much more than 4 GB of memory.

I'd love to, but the only problem I still have is Cisco VPN Client. Anyone have any suggestions?

You are a man, you admit your "loss", that's what I appreciate. I read it wrong in the beginning too but the reread it. I still doubt anyone is buying 64GB for almost 4000$.. Good that you send the email, maybe they have proof of it (would be page 2 news at least).

Cheers
