Hey guys,

So I've been a happy iPhone X owner since launch, love the phone. On launch day impulse made me purchase the 256gb version over the 64gb. Now, I've made some changes on my phone today (deleted loads of messages, activated iCloud Photo Library etc) and I'm now only using 35gb of storage.

Do you think it would be worth swapping out for the 64gb? Money isn't the issue here, it just feels that having 256gb of storage is a bit excessive.

What do you guys think?

With Apple Music and google photo I didn’t felt like I could ever use more then 30 gb. In fact I’m actually using 12. Anyway it’s about u: if u gonna be a crazy hoarder of junk files like meme and photos in multiple copies I will probably need 256. If U care about ur phone and delete the trash u won’t never need 256 probably.

Your just using 35 Gb right now.
I don't know for what period of time you normally use your iPhones, but images, videos and other stuff will accumulate quickly, I suppose.
Furthermore, please take the picture I've added into your consideration.

I am someone that deletes stupid pictures or vid I took for whatever reason. On my iPhone 7, which I had for an entire year, I only used 45 of the alloted 128GB. I used Google Photos to back up photos. I don’t have many apps. I don’t record much video. I mainly use my phone to text, web browse and view content. So I did download a lot of content onto my phone on Netflix and YouTube but after I watched it, it was deleted. I downloaded a lot of music onto my phone as well for offline listening from Apple Music. Apple Music was actually the highest storage user with 21GB.

Also keep in mind that iCloud is 0.99 a month for 50GB of storage. $12 a year. Chump change if I did record a lot of video. But you already have the 256GB so don’t go through the hassle of exchanging it honestly especially if you have to pay a restocking fee.

If you care for your phone? Use the memory available Anyway you want. Using 12gb out of 256gb is absurd in my personal opinion

I have a similar problem but I am just at about 64gb of space, so the 256 was an easy choice for me, but I can see how not so easy for you. Something I realized on my last phone is that pics, videos, and downloaded Netflix ate space quickly.

The question may be how long you go between downloading your pics and videos onto your computer and if you get on planes a lot (or other off grid places). If these are not issues, 64gb should be plenty.

I agree it’s a stupid waste to get excessively more than you need. I’m mildly bitter that there is no 128 option, but extra space buys me flexibility in the future. Returning and setting up a new phone is also a PIA so there’s that too.

i went from the 128gb 7 plus to a 256gb X... i never went above 40GB.. but i rather have the extra than to one day needing the extra space and not having it. If money is no issue then just keep it. 4K videos and downloading movies for offline viewing will add up

If you plan to upgrade in the next 2-3 years, 64GB should be enough.

App sizes may balloon, but it's the personal data that takes the most space. You know best how many photos or videos you expect to take.

So now you can disable storage optimization for iCloud Photo Library, and download full-size versions of everything. Much better than seeing all of the blurry versions and waiting for them to load.

You can also download all of your Apple Music library.

As for messages, I never delete them, as I like having the history. Mine go back to 2012 I think.

After all that, I think I’m at about 70 GB.

I average around 40gb storage on my 7+ 128. That being said, I’ve gone on vacation or had other times where I downloaded a good bit of movies and shows. The extra space was nice to have in those circumstances.

I’d keep the 256gb. My 7 was 128gb and I used about 70-80gb, but really I probably could have deleted some apps that I don’t use and taken it below 64gb but my outlook was if I’m going to be paying around £1000 for a phone I might as well just get the bigger size and not worry about having to delete anything

I vote to Keep because you more than likely will start to fill it up with new photos and videos. Also if you go to sell it later, the 256GB version will go for more than the 64GB. Plus if money’s not an issue why go through the hassle of returning, backing up, finding in store stock, restoring. Just seems like a hassle that’s not worth it.

Borntrouble’s post nails it. You will use more storage over time for a variety of reasons. I’m currently using about 40 GB out of 64 on my iPhone 6, but the better camera capability of the X is just one reason why I will go for the 256 GB model. The higher resolution camera sensor and 4K video means individual photos and videos will take up more storage. The improved cameras also mean that I will probably shoot a lot more with the iPhone X than I do with my iPhone 6. I frequently carry a small dedicated camera kit, but I will probably leave it at home more often. Even with iCloud Photo Library set to optimize iPhone storage, I will expect to use much more iPhone storage for photo and video.

Then consider what we will see in terms of new apps and app upgrades as developers take advantage of the faster hardware and, if Apple ever allows it, the dot projector. As they have done in the past, installed apps will become larger and will cache more data. 64 GB was great for the era of the iPhone 6 and 7. It might get you a year into iPhone X ownership, but after that I bet it would feel like too little.

I currently have 256 GB model, but I'm only utilizing 18 GB so far. I could be fine with the 64 GB. But I'd rather have the highest capacity. If apple did 128 GB as their low tier for the X, I might have just gone with that one instead of the 256 GB.

i would get the 64gb variant!i have 128gb iphone 7 plus and 92gb available,im trying to get the 64gb X when the sim free will be out.$165 difference is too much for me when i get 64gb sandisk iexpand for $50.im going to updrage every year though so saving $165 no brainer for me

Apple wants you to use more of the storage by taking more 4k videos which will eat up your iCloud storage then force you to upgrade your iCloud storage. Simple as that.

I was hoping for a 128gb. No need for 256gb for me. I went with the 64 gb model because I was using 40gb on my JB iPhone 7 Plus 128gb. With cloud storage I figured I’ll be fine. I buy the new iPhone every year.
