Who are these kids that are too young for a phone but old enough for a banking app?
My question is, who are these kids that are too young for a phone but old enough for an iPod Touch?
You know that they both can do the exact same things, visit the exact same websites, you’re still handing your kids the internet.
If anything I would think the iPhone would be more secure because, since it has Cellular data and gps, if your kid goes missing you can attempt to track them.
With an iPod, if they’re not connected to Wi-Fi, it’s just useless.
I don’t even think the iPod has the ultra band find my network or anything

"iTunes" music app on my iPhone is horrendous, uninviting, a twilight-zone wtf experience. Apple is clueless to those who collect music against the wishes of the streaming overlords.
This is my main argument, for those who stream they have no issue listening to the basics, but I who collects music and was glad Apple let us access our HI res lossless collection, ios devices suck big time for playback. Plus ios can only handle one audio stream at a time so if you want to use safari or other apps your music gets paused no matter what, Therefore I’m fighting to unpause my music.

This day and age has hilarious brought up back the need for a standalone PMP device because iphones and ipads are just focused on playing anything else but music Because the itunes app and music app from ios are the worst at the moment.

All i see is iPod classics get the modern update with bigger flash drives but I want to buy a new one and me thinking how they pulled off the click wheel feature on the apple tv hd remote recently It would had been a killer feature!!!

You know you could just… buy an iPhone XR and just not put a Sim card in it, and it’s going to be about the same price as if Apple were to update the iPod touch, around $300

Or I could buy an iPhone X for much less... That is beside points. If Apple wants to update iPod Touch, they need something attractive. Not just half ass attempt like current gen iPod Touch.

Many years ago I worked at Target for Christmas and they used ipod touch for the inventory, product lookup, etc. It worked pretty well and I thought it was a clever use. I worked this last Christmas again and they had switched to Android devices, they were total trash. The thing crashed on me over and over again, disaster.

there is no need for a new model because 1) you can get a low end iPhone pretty cheap these days and 2) most parents whose kids want an iPod touch could be easily convinced to buy themselves a new iPhone and give their kids their old one hence being more profitable for Apple. That is assuming that you don't already have an old iPhone in a drawer somewhere anyway. My kids have an iPhone 5C for my youngest and 8 for my oldest, I had a 6S I gave away to someone else because I really don't need that many old devices sitting around. The 5C doesn't have much storage but since it isn't a gaming device it is fine for her to listen to some music, especially streaming, or take a few photos.

I think it’s clear that Apple doesn’t care about the iPod touch at all.
It’s been removed from their main website, it hasn’t had a design change in over nine years, The only reason they keep it around is so the iOS support list can still say “iPod touch” on it, and because they probably have just enough laying around to justify keeping it there.

I found this update disappointing and it pushed me to buy an iPhone SE (2016) instead.

This chassis is limiting too. The battery on my 6th gen got so bad that it has to be plugged in or it turns off within seconds.

i think they will scrap it and it will be sad to see the iPod disappear.

i'd love a redesigned iPod. forget about having a web browser or games and ditch the cameras. make its focus entirely on music.

i'm thinking something like an iPod nano x iPhone. imagine a ~3-4" all display touch device with no cameras. not even a front one so there's no notch. the closest would be the 7th gen nano but with no home button. have it run a barebones version of iOS that only installs music apps. it would come with Apple Music but you could download Spotify too.

of course that won't happen. it doesn't make any real sense to do it. i just don't want to see the ipod go

I wonder if the current Touch could replace an iPhone if paired with an Apple Watch. The Watch could carry the cellular connection. If it could, I'd actually consider that option down the road, especially if Apple ditches the iPhone mini.

Keep in mind the previous 6th gen iPod was over 1,400 days old before the 7th gen was introduced. People still buy them as gifts for kids and Apple promotes it as a gateway to the App Store.

This is the way.

ah yes - the ipod shuffle used to be a well worn and trusted friend during working out

It’s about price. I think the cheapest iPhone is around $600 in this thing is around $200. It’s a lot easier to give your four year old a $200 device that he can smash versus a $600 device.

If we are going by that market that’s the reason why it doesn’t get frequent updates. Why does it need to have the latest processor or go super fast if it’s just for a kid or maybe something people bring on a jog for music. The most important thing is low price so in order to keep the price low it gets less frequent updates. I suspect that’s probably the worst selling device that Apple has. It’s primary market is gone so Apple is just keeping it around for the niche market and nostalgia. Don’t be surprised if it gets discontinued within a few years.

I didn't even realize they still sold this. Weird.

It would be interesting to see what the iPod Classic would've looked like today if they kept it going with regular hardware design and UI updates. I've got some slick concepts rolling around in my head.

It's funny, this isn't even the most outdated hardware on Apple's Store. The Apple TV HD is a $149 device that can't do 4K and is powered by an A8 chip for crying out loud. Isn't that insane? The A8 first debuted in 2014, the same year as my second grader.

The seventh-generation iPod touch is 1,000 days old as of today, with no apparent sign of a new model on the way.

In May 2019, Apple unveiled the seventh-generation iPod touch. With 32 months having now passed since the seventh-generation iPod touch's launch, it is now the oldest device in Apple's lineup. Apple's next-oldest device still on sale is the AirPods Pro, which were released in October 2019 and hit 847 days old today.
I remember looking at a $199 iPod touch awhile back but a $399 5th gen iPad mini was just way more useful as a media playback device that was small. It just didn't make sense also compared to getting a discounted 4" iPhone SE that also was at least a phone. Neither the wifi only iPod touch and the iPhone SE are very usable for reading news on their 4" screens IMHO.

Why is the iPod Touch still even a thing?? Get rid of it! It's old. It's time to move on with our lives. Stop putting money into an product like that.

You are better off to buy a locked Straight Talk iPhone SE from Walmart for $249 for 64GB with A13 and use it as an iPod.

Unless you give it to a small child and don't want to worry about them intentionally or unintentionally calling 911 (or whatever emergency number your country has).

Let's be honest the iPod is now pretty much a dead product, everyone either has an iPhone that has plenty of local storage or even streams most of the content. Easy enough to convert an old iPhone into an Wifi only iPod.

Surprised Apple hasn't killed of the last the of the iPods yet.
