I believe you do lose it all if the cable goes out, because it's supplied through the same system (or cable?) the TV cable goes through. The best possible option would probably be a fast DSL connection like the one you have. Too bad they don't supply it in my area.

You might not lose everything if the TV goes out. While they all come through the same cable to your house, the TV is sent from a different source than the internet or voice service. I have had TV go out and still had internet. If your internet goes out, then you will lose voice as well.

I didn't want to create a new thread for this, but...

Is it possible that routers can be slow, but not lose connection? My internet seems to be slower than it normally is, and I'm wondering if it's the router or what. Are routers either connected or not connected, or can they be slow?

But, again, I'm not really sure why someone would want to pay more for cable internet, considering the new modem, bandwidth limit, slightly higher chance of your privacy leaking to others in your area, etc. I am on the internet about 4-5 hours a day for entertainment (when I was taking school online, it was even more), and have really found no need to upgrade. I just figured that if cable internet was the same price as DSL or maybe slightly higher I would go for it, but it's actually double what I'm paying for right now!

Well, I want to pay more because I get a pretty consistent 22.0Mb/s down and 6Mb/s up speed. Compared to your 2.0Mb/s...I wouldn't even consider that kind of speed. If my math is correct, that's a MAX of 250KB/sec.

How much did Comcast quote you? As part of my cable package, I pay $43 a month for internet plus $5 for the modem. According to the bill, I have a max 15Mb/s speed, but I definitely get more than that, at least according to speedtest.net. I work from home, and do a lot of computer hobby stuff outside of that, so I'm on my computer about 10-12 hours a day. I have never hit any supposed cap or been charged extra.

It's the cable portion of my bill that is psychotic. Oh, and as for losing internet when the cable goes out....that's happened twice in five years to me. And one time was after a huge storm that knocked a tree down at the end of the street and took out the entire pole and lines...with thousands of people out of power and roofs missing. Cable was the least of the worries!

I compared Comcast's quote with what I'm already paying for internet, and it was more. I have phone+DSL from AT&T, so they gave me a really good deal for internet (in the $25-30 range). I lost motivation when I heard that with my current Comcast cable, the internet would be more (like around $40) for the one I want (performance - up to 15mbps), plus the hassle of the installation and modem, etc. The only negative about my current service is that the downloads take way too long (like if you're downloading an Adobe trial or something). I don't see how you would want the web pages to load any faster, though. The only value I see in a faster service is for downloading things, which I do once every blue moon.

... I was looking into Comcast to see if I could get a good deal. I called, and the prices are outrageous after the first 12 months compared to what I have now. I didn't realize I would have to purchase a modem with it either until you pointed it out. Right now, I don't really have a DSL "modem", but rather this tiny beige box on the wall that connects right to my router through ethernet. It's actually pretty good visually, as far as clutter is concerned.

If you are content with your current service, don't really care about more speed, and are getting enough bandwidth now, then I'd say stick with DSL. I have Comcast and their service in my area has been pretty good. We had some problems a couple of years ago with some frequent outages, but it seems they have taken care of whatever hiccups. I have friends who just recently switched from AT&T DSL to Comcast and they are much happier with the increased bandwidth. But it is more expensive. On the flip side, you don't need a contract with Comcast, so you can cancel whenever you like.

As for the first year introductory package prices, just call Comcast up as you near the end of that year and tell them you want a better deal. You have to be firm (but polite) and they will give it to you. At least that has been my experience.

Yeah if you want to be hit with their just enforced 250GB data cap. (That may see like a lot but think about Netflix, iTunes downloads, etc.)

I just switched to the Comcast Triple Play. Speeds are incredible.

I am paying $61.99/month for cox's fastest internet. I get "up to" 20mb DL and 2mb UL. My friend pays the same amount about 15 miles away and when you have the highest internet in his area it is uncapped so whatever comes in is what you get. He sent me an MMS of around 69mb per second DL and 6mb UL. Sucks because we pay the same price. I guess it just depends on your area.

I see you switched. Good on ya! I switched about 4 months ago and never looked back. Faster all around and it saved me $200 a month to boot.:)
