What's the app for jailbreaking to change SMS tones?

It's not really an app - you have to SSH into your iPhone (using Cyberduck or something similar) and replace the sms sound files with your own sound files.

There's a bunch of decent youtube videos showing you how to do it step-by-step, it's really easy. Here's one. I love having custom tones for texts and such.

I can't imagine adding this feature (or at least upgrading some of the stock sounds - bell and horn, really? awful) would be that time intensive for Apple's programmers.

Anyway. Venting about this has actually been rather cathartic. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who is very WTF over this in general.

There is an app but I forget the name...I did the jailbreak on my 3G a while back but reverted later. Google around and it will come up.

There is just not enough processing power capable of handling this level of customization. I'm hoping they have it figured out by iphone 7.

I'd love to see Steve Jobs response to this question. There is no legitimate excuse, so it would have to be something completely obnoxious, yet at the same time, brilliant, like..

Stay tuned. Everything comes in it's time.

It is a bit tedious when you hear *ding ding* in a crowd and 15 people check their phones, BUT it's also nice to only have SMS ring tones to complain about at this point :) . Apple has come a long way with the iPhone. If this is all we have left to majorly complain about, I'll take it! Lol

Thanks for the information, guys, much appreciated.

And ARGH! Seriously? I can't even come up with a logical explanation for why they'd keep leaving this out. FFS it's 2010 - every piece of crap prepaid phone on the planet can change sms tones.

Guess I'll be JB'ing once again - and making sure I take advantage of the free apps.

Yeah shame about this and i too will look into a jailbreak for my own ringtones if it's not an option Granted, Apple are dealing with alot of the legitamate reasons to JB and adding lots of features. But the reason they won't allow us to use songs as ringtones is because they have a service where we have to pay to convert a song into a ringtone. So yeah we can do it just we have to pay through iTunes.
We buy the phones at a real expensive price and then to get any major function or personalisation, we (not that we are forced to) give more money to Apple for doing so.

It's called sarcasm.

Ive made a bunch of free ring-tones by saving audio as (AAC) M4a then renaming to M4r (then open in iTunes), but no joy in the text alert dept. ACCESS DENIED!
Quite surprised and dismayed like the rest of you.

Why are you surprised? Not to sound harsh but this thread itself is a start reminder that apple has locked the phone down, in such a way so that you cannot have custom ringtones, unless you jailbreak the phone.

I'm just wondering if there's another way that someone hadn't tried...

Like those wizards of the Dev-Team with PwnageTool that basically rebuild the IPSW file... can't they just create a similar program that won't jailbreak the firmware, but squeeze in customized SMS and E-Mail tones that will be recompiled in a "legit" IPSW file that you can restore with iTunes?

UPDATE: I fired off a message to the Dev-Team... hopefully I'll get a response and post it here.

I would point out that you can do your own custom ringtones without jailbreaking, hence the lack of custom text tones being a continued surprise.

Custom ringtones, but given that this topic has been raised many times - custom txt notification tones. It really shouldn't be a complete surprise to many people.
