I really wish they would add the capability to have custom Text tones. The others are getting old.

Another user here who is on the verge of jailbreaking due to this. I mean really. No custom sms tones? How many times i've been in a room with a bunch of people with iphones and EVERYONE looks at their phones once a message tone is heard.

Like seriously apple, whats the issue here?

I'm not about to jailbreak mine, but I do wish I could use a custom tone for SMS/mail. I have no idea why Apple has never gotten to implement it for the iPhone.

That is the ABSOLUTE truth! Tonight I was with a small group of people all of whom have iPhones. One of us got a text message and ALL 7 of us reached for our phones to see if it was us! It was like a Saturday Night Live skit! It's one of the most frustrating and ridiculous things about owning an iPhone and one that would be incredibly simple for Apple to remedy.

3 minute jailbreak, install tonefx from cydia then change every sound on the iPhone to your hearts content, no SSH necessary simples!

When iOS4.2 arrives i'll be jailbreaking both my iPhone and iPad

For iPhone to get custom SMS alerts
For iPad to (hopefully) get a mod to set the switch back to orientation lock

Its really ridiculous that i have to go to lengths to do something so trivial

there's a possible tell tale sign we MIGHT be getting custom SMS tones in 4.2..... in beta 3 they added a bunch of new tones and then underneath the new ones are the original ones and underneath the original ones there is a box that says non..... could be a sign of Apple allowing custom ringtones at some point perhaps?

EDIT: also in 4.2 you can now assign a sms and ringtone per contact

Well since the beta of iOS 4.2 allows you to assign different SMS tones to different contacts, could be the full 4.2 will allow custom SMS tones as well and they just kept it out of beta as a surprise....

Yeah, no custom or new SMS tones. Pretty sad really. How hard can it be to add this feature?

This is Apple were talking about, basic features like multitasking, copy and paste, MMS, tethering and so on take an eternity for Apple to decide what the customer wants.

I hope you are right. This is an annoyance to me and many others. One can only hope that our friends in Cupertino get that at this point.

Exactly....it's that easy.

Why some refuse to jailbreak is beyond me. Meanwhile android users are rooting their asses off.

it's easy why people don't want to jailbreak, they choose not to for their own reasons. it's their choice. just cos people can, doesn't mean they have to or should. plus if its really something small like custom SMS tones, why go to that effort if it really doesn't matter that much, risking voiding warranty to do so.

Why? It's easy, minimal to no issues, opens up your phone to complete customization and brings it to another level of functionality. I cant see anyone at this day and age not wanting to jailbreak.

Plenty of people don't care about all that stuff. They want the phone to work right, straight from the box, and in spite of any "upgrades" Apple may throw at it. I'm married to someone like that--thinks all the changes to my phone are cool, even useful, but won't even consider doing the same to his. It fits his needs for the most part, and where it doesn't, he doesn't get fussed about it. I think more people tend to think more that way than want to fuss with their firmware.

Me, I did jailbreak mine primarily for this function. BiteSMS is now my single most used app on the iPhone, and I love that I can use any ringtone in my library as a custom SMS tone set to a specific contact. Plus I gained Quick Reply and Quick Compose for texts from any screen, including the lockscreen. No regrets at all, it's a huge improvement over the built in app.
