But they don't "make you pay."

The offer paid ringtones, yes. They also let you make ringtones in garage band using any audio you have (such as audio you got from a CD). So Apple makes it pretty darned easy to make ringtones from copyrighted material.

This is an actual feature of the software I'm talking about here...not a hack.

I don't think you can say they make you buy anything.

And even on Windows you can use iTunes to make free ringtones out of music on your system (not as nice and easy as garage band, but it's there)

Yes I'm serious, in terms of the reasoning given for wanting "custom" tones. A "custom" tone would be, well, custom. I'm not coming up with problems to a simple plan. You want custom tones, then compose a custom tone. Semantics? Maybe ;)

Since it looks like you're talking about wanting to add snippets of copyrighted material as an SMS tone, then surely Apple will make you pay for it just like they make you pay for ringtones through iTunes (as I said in C).

And ahh, stealthy edit before my quote/post.

Speak for yourself, I've never paid for a ringtone from Apple and can make more that I ever need off my existing music.

What's to NOT be in favor of in this regard? If you want to use stock sounds, you can.
If on the other hand you want to customize, you do it!

It's a feature found on many phones going way back and it has been ridiculous that the iPhone doesn't allow it.

On previous phones, I have used custom SMS tones which are shortened versions of my custom ring tones. That allows me to know who has texted me without needing to look at the phone which gives me flexibility in prioritizing when to immediately look at an incoming text message (say if I am in a meeting or something) and which messages can be responded to at a later time.

I didn't say that I paid for ringtones, just that Apple has them via iTunes. I personally don't really care one way or another whether or not Apple lets users have custom SMS tones. I was just stating why I believe from Apple's perspective they likely won't do it. I'd think there's a gazillion other tweaks Apple could make to the iPhone instead that would likely satisfy a larger portion of their consumer base.

Besides, I'm not a 12 year old girl, so I don't use songs as ringtones (whether paid for or created by me).

Every time I watch The Office and one of their iPhone's get a text, I check my phone.

I was at the store the other day, received a text, and 2 people behind me in line whipped out their iPhone's to check for a message.

If Apple doesn't want to implement custom SMS tones, they should at least give us the option of some decent text tones.

I love the enthusiasm, but external petitions are more or less worthless. If you really want to petition Apple why not send your custom SMS request directly to them?

Select "Enhancement Request" and ask Apple to let you use "custom SMS tones".

Most people don't want to use songs as SMS tones; however, it would be nice to use some nondescript beeps or alerts instead of the standard Tri-tone.

But you'd have to agree that direct feedback hasn't worked so far? So why not try sending a consolidated message? Anyway...

I think you're right about most people not wanting songs as ringtones, some nice electronic bleeps and what not would be good. I reckon that Tri Tone is the only suitable SMS alert in the existing stock sounds

Well it's tough to say. If you're of the persuasion that Apple plans to revamp the notification system - as I am - then it is quite possible that Apple would hold off implementing a custom notification system until such time.

I guess what I'm saying is 1) submit feedback, and 2) sign the petition, because sending direct feedback always helps, but I suppose only as much as the public in general demonstrates to Apple that we're not satisfied by the current SMS tone offerings.

And you're right, tri-tone is the only acceptable SMS tone.

How about they just let the SMS app use the ringtone sounds?

And how is it you're coming up with problems to a plan that's so simple I can describe it in one sentence? Just do that. Problem solved.
People know how to make and add ringtones. I'm sure they can figure out how to make 2 second ringtones.

This would be cool, The only SMS tone on the iPhone I like is the tri tone but bit bored of it now. I can't understand how we are allowed to make our own ringtones but not our own SMS tones?.
Come on Apple, make it a feature of the next update, please!!

Yeah, I had a Nokia N95 for a long time, and my new iPhone trumps it in pretty much every respect. But I think it's ridiculous that the SMS noise is the same as the noise it would make if I were to be tagged in a tweet, or a photo in Facebook.

On the flip-side, email gets its own noise :S

quick update on this, there are now 600 signatures, but some more would be good!

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/custom-sms-alert-sounds-for-iphone/

I don't mean to hurt your cause here but 600 hundred signatures is a joke. I'd love to get custom sms tones just as much as the rest of you but you realize that 600 signatures is .001% of the AT&T preorders for the iPhone 4 and an even smaller percent of the total iphone population. I'm not saying that these 600 are the only ones calling it for but a business makes a a decision based on sales. This thing is selling as fast as apple can make it. They clearly don't have to do anything. Good luck though. I'd love to see this feature come around sooner rather than later.

^ That's why I recommended submitting requests directly to Apple. Those requests go to the engineers. And that's really the only hope of feature requests getting up the ladder.
