Lol no. It was internet spam and pop ups that would scare the computer illiterate into downloading it and paying for it. Making them think they were protecting their computer, when in actuality did more harm.
Thank the Gods for AdBlock (and Web Of Trust)! Those two extensions I always have enabled on Safari, so that's one big reason why I never heard of this MacKeeper.
What I've always liked about this concept is that you can carry the product anywhere, but still feel good that you're using locally sourced ingredients.
Wow, that came out of nowhere. I hate MacKeeper with a passion. Feels like if it was gone for real I could disable adblock and not get angry at the ads.
For those saying this only pops up on p**n sites or torrent sites or black market sites, the only site I saw pushing this regularly was speedtest.net
And this occurs with AdBlockPlus and DNT (aka albine aka Blur) installed.
Just checked and although the specific MacKeeper logo has been removed, they've replaced it with a new link to what appears to be the same crap renamed as "MacReviver".
So, this PUP is NOT dead yet.
NEW:........................................OLD:
LATE EDIT: I'm not interested in trying to compare the two downloads, so I can't say the ARE the same thing. An archive.org search shows MacReviver has been running since at least August 2013.
LATE LATE EDIT: I have it on good authority that whilst MacReviver "does not appear to be in any way related to MacKeeper" it certainly fits the bill as yet another PUP.
