Sliding a card, chip and pin, Apple Pay, Samsung pay, CVS pay. The entire payment system is a nightmare.

It's hard enough to pull out a card and swipe now. I don't have time to see what payment method works. It's easier to shop online.

That's an interesting point, these mega retailers in an effort to protect their fiefdoms are only accelerating their demise by inconveniencing their customers. Over the longterm Amazon et al are going to eat their lunch.

Why? They never supported Apple Pay in the first place. The only thing that's new is their pathetic attempt to create something similar.
Actually CVS used to have the NFC terminals turned on. I used my Wells Fargo tap-to-pay on then. They turned them off when Apple released Apple Pay. I hoped they'd see the light once CurrentC failed, but it seems they still haven't learned.

I think there is some credit due to the fact this will integrate loyalty, prescription pickup, and payment, so will be a decent option for CVS loyalists. At least they are trying - better then Walmart Pay which does nothing.

That said, why does each chain think they should have their own app? And why use old technology for it, that is harder to use.

To those who say ApplePay is a fail, I wouldn't quite say that - it's still gaining ground, and there are quite a few more places that accept it/NFC then say, a year or two ago. Still not as ubiquitous as it should be. In Canada, for example, I feel like I really could leave home without my wallet and still be able to buy basically anything with just my phone on me. Definitely not even close to that level in the US. Would love it if we could get there.

How is this different from CurrentC or Walmart Pay?

AFAIK, in the former case, it seems there is the ability to use debit and credit cards instead of ACH, but it seems quite like the latter.

It's as if CurrentC went into zombie mode and splintered into local home grown solutions.

In any case, if it's not:
- NFC based
- avoiding code scanning usage
- able to go in my wallet
- payable via credit card
- leveraging TouchID,

then it's not for me!

In some ways, the USA is woefully behind the rest of the world.

So pretty much this?

It's really not that hard. If they have an NFC enabled terminal chances are that they accept NFC payments. Clerks tend to tell you if they don't accept C&P and stuff like CVS Pay are entirely optional

Can I double tap my home button to bring up this payment option? No. Then no thanks CVS.

Pretty much this. Stores refusing Apple Pay are obviously being run by old school Boomer JerkWads who are hell bent on driving customers away, whether they realize it or not.

A few years from now, when all these companies are crashing and burning, they still won't know what happened.

Sears and Kmart used to be relevant lol.

A few years from now the companies refusing Apple Pay and driving customer loyalty into the dumpster will be shuttering stores just like Kmart and Sears have been doing.

Huh. Now that you mention it, I wonder if this is all just a convoluted plan from Amazon to completely shut down every brick and mortar store.

I've been going to CVS for so long, I figured I'd give them the benefit of the doubt that they'd turn on Apple Pay once the CurrentC fiasco played out.

But this is just consumer hostile. They have NFC terminals, they actually used to work until Apple Pay was first released, and now they still refuse to turn NFC back on.

Count me in as another switching to Walgreens. It's closer to my new house anyway.

I use Walgreen's as well and lately when I use Apple Pay, about 40% of the time, it will still ask for a PIN. I think this is just a technical snafu but yeah Walgreen's it is.

I remember too the glory days of the first iPhone when we all discovered that the screen resolution was so good, scanners could easily resolve the bar code on screen. Again, my own experience with this has been 50/50. I can't believe these clueless retailers want you to stand there and fumble around trying to get the scanner to read your bar code while a line of six people stand behind you waiting impatiently to buy enough Sudafed to make this week's batch of meth.

Do people shop at CVS enough that they would want to configure yet another Pay App? I know I don't.

There might be a few, but this is just an attempt to lock people into CVS's echo system. Depending on where most of CVS's business is generated will determine if this is a success for them.

They obviously aren't interested in the customer that stops in once in a while for something quick and likes to use their phone to pay since most people still use credit cards.

IMHO it is just easier to use Walgreens since they have all the same items anyway.
