I was recently telling a store clerk (at another store which doesn't offer Apple or Android Pay) about the back history on stores which do and do not offer this service, especially with CVS which tried to use CurrentC (w/o too much success) or how other stores (such as Walmart) are trying to control the whole experience so they can get as much customer data as possible. Now if CVS could stop with the mile long receipts (which is the main reason I didn't bother with the CVS card).

This is good news. Now CVS needs to let us add their ExtraCare Card to Apple Wallet. Walgreens has had it available for years.

The pharmacy in my local Target is run by CVS. I'm guessing the CVS stores inside Target aren't switching?

I believe all of the Target pharmacies were taken over by CVS. For some places which don't have CVS, the only "CVS" locations are the pharmacies in Target.

Same. Although I hate CVS. I can’t count the times I go to pay for something and they’re short handed. They’re always restocking and have no cashiers. If they do have an attendant, there’s a long line. They’ll wait for most of the line to dissipate THEN call someone over for assistance. It’s one of the worst retail companies in existence, yet somehow it’s always filled with customers. I don’t understand.
I hear you. The last time I gave CVS a shot it was like that. Slowwww cashier and a big line. I left. Haven't been back.

I really wish gas stations would start accepting NFC/Apple Pay at the pump (Shell in particular). This is an area that needs contactless payment because so many thief's use credit card skimmers around here.

Exxon Mobil actually has a decent setup with their app. You open the app, select the pump number, and hit Apple Pay and it takes it. This way they don’t have to put NFC reader upgrades on every pump which would cost millions whil still enabling users to activate via Apple Pay.

That is great but I am wondering if they traded one risk for another. I don't know if I like the idea of remotely turning on gas pumps via the internet.

EDIT: Who am I kidding. I would so use this.

I'd like a list of the ~1000 most common retailers and see who supports it everywhere, who supports it only on the web, who supports it only in store, and who doesn't support it period.

Does such a chart exist anywhere? Seems like a good thing for MacRumors to put in the Apple Pay roundup, but I don't see anything there. Maybe just a crowdsourced chart on Wikipedia or Google Sheets or something?

How about this thread? https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/major-retailers-that-support-nfc-payments.1806254/

Speedway's new pumps in my city have a contactless terminal that says "Coming Soon"

I remember buying something at CVS using Apple Pay years ago. Then they shut it off for no good reason. Then I stopped going there. Surely these companies must realize this is inevitable, right? Stop being anti-consumer and let them pay how they want to pay.

Coming from a country where tap to pay (and hence nearly unrestricted adoption of Apple Pay) has been the norm for years, it’s bizarre that this is a newsworthy item. Especially in a first world country.

Sad to say when it comes to credit card, internet, wireless networks, the US Not a First World Country. Actually far behind Most of the World’s so called Third World Countries. Reason, business greed not technology. :(

Agreed. I use the Shell app currently to be able to do it. You just get out and enter a code that your phone generates on the pump and start pumping.

I used it in Oregon with full service gas, it is a god send. Some stations otherwise would make you get out of the car to run the card so they can pump the gas (Arco stations)

Nope. I use my Capital One Debit card with no issues.
Well thats new then for me, I will reinstall the app, before the app only supported Chase Pay. Who the hell uses that crap?

Why that's so big news in US? In EU we can use ApplePay literally everywhere, where the contactless terminal is, so just about everywhere, even it the smallest grocery stories.

Because of totally different regulatory environments. EU regulates cards and interchange fees etc. extensively. The US does not. The greater regulation means it's easier to adopt newer technologies. On the other hand, the increased regulation means that things like rewards credit cards are much stingier in Europe.

Another downside is that merchants here dislike cards a lot more than in Europe (mainly due to interchange, though there are other factors too). I suspect that a lot of reluctance to contactless is because it might encourage more use of cards for smaller purchases vs. the majority of such transactions being cash as they are now.

i agree that retailers dislike cards due to their processing fees, but I can't remember the last time I saw anyone pay with cash a major retailer. Cash is the outlier now in my experience.
