The fact that MCX is being so dictatorial about NFC, proves to me anyway, that their product is inferior. If it wasn't inferior, they would open it to all types of payments including NFC.

Whenever I see very stringent terms for licensing, I tent to think that 1) the product is not that good, 2) someone is over extended in investment, or 3) the license issuer has been taken over by a control freak that knows little about the product operation.

To the 3 posters below.... if Apple chooses not to support MCX in their retail stores next year, will you show this much rage as well? Or would you say: Hey, it's Apple's prerogative (not..it's their DAMN RIGHT!) to use whatever payment system they want.

Just wondering why you guys think a business can't make its own rules on what they support or don't? Or are you just typical fanatics that want to bash anything anti-Apple because CVS somehow inflicted harm on you?

It is Apple's prerogative to not support MCX if that's the route they choose to go, and it is every consumer's right to not shop at the Apple Store if they have a problem with the lack of MCX support.

Much like the situation with merchants removing support for Apple Pay.

Exactly. Banning NFC shows insecurity and fear on the part of MCX.

Exclusinary practivess and slow roll out on the part of MCX will cause these stores (who are really commoditized businesses) to bleed iphone carrying customers to their Apple Pay accepting competitors (Apple Pay will be a USP drawing point opportunity for retailers supporting it.)

will never use whatever they try to push

I will NEVER use whatever they try to push not because of Apple, simply I don't want anything link to my personal checking account other then paying my bills for CC. Credit cards at least I don't have to worry about hacking then I will lose my money, I monitor my CC statements every 2 days. Once I find some illegal activities I call and cancel my CC right away. Can they guarantee if their system get hacked and my hard earned money is gone, they will reimburse me??? And the bank will issue me a new bank account right away? Also they will need cooperation from banks, if banks refuse to let them link the checking accounts to their accounts, then it's DOA.

PR RELEASE from Rite Aid & CVS...

"While we cannot accept Apple Pay at this time, we are currently working on a new payment system for 2015, so please don't die just yet." LOL

I realize the business aspect. They've already signed onto another system, but what bad PR for companies related to medicine and health.

This is worse than when Ebay blocked most payments outside of Paypal.

Result? TONS OF EBAY COMPETITORS NOW! Good move penny counters! NOT!

Additional downside of MCX being a glorified debit card is that customers will have to maintain adequate funds in their account for 30-days each month in order to secure payment. Via Apple Pay and a credit card, customers need only have enough money in their account to pay the card issuer once per month.

This extremely reduces the management overhead for individuals who don't keep a lot of money in their checking accounts.

There is no learning curve. It's point and shoot.

You seem not to understand infrastructure and (re)training of staff on what they know about new technologies and payment methods. I constantly ask the shops local to us (CO-OP, UK) "Do you sell 360money vouchers?" (prepaid mastercard vouchers) - "NO", they say. Next, ask for the manager, and suddenly he says "Of course we do".

Naive customer walks in with iPhone 6, asks "do you accept Mapple pay?" - if staff aren't aware they do, that could mean lost sales.

Staff need training, no matter how little that training is. Poor (or no) training = lost sales. :)

I live in the UK and work in London, Nearly every supermarket / coffee shop / general shop has NFC and my Barclays card works with all of them.

I really hope that when Apple Pay comes to the UK, none of our retailers will pull this move!

I don't think they would, we're too British and accept anything/anyone foreign!

If you're willing to back-up everything you own to iCloud, and everything about yourself on Facebook. what's an SSN here and there?

We're comparing Apple Pay to MCX as far as security. A world of difference. Icloud has nothing to with Apple Pay.

Have Apple confiscated all your cash and credit cards... or just your common sense, individuality and rational thought? :p

Oh, again confirming you past purchase by talking here, want me to go on about your post about that Moto... Hmmm. Feels reassurring to laugh at people doesn't it. Tell us all about it. We won't judge.

If I were Walgreens, I'd release a PR statement that they've decided to ban all cigarette sales too just like CVS, but will allow you to pay for your health needs and prescriptions via Apple Pay and ANY other payment system that is as secure as Apple Pay! We won't make you wait until 2015 for you to be able to easily pay for your needed prescriptions.

BAMM! CVS high ground GONE! :D

Nope. If they had NFC enabled already there is no training. I just say credit and then point my phone. Whether I swipe or point my phone matters not to the cashier.

LOL way to go apple. Now we have less nfc payment locations. CVS and Riteaid has little control over their electronic payment processing system. MCX has control of a lot more and much better retail than apple pay. Heres a list of some retail stores that we will not see accepting apple pay because they are run by MCX.

Walmart
Publix
Best Buy
Target
Lowes
Dillards
Kohls
Bed bath beyond
Kmart
Micheals
meijer
Sears
Gap
Old navy
Banana republic
Shell gas
76
exxonmobil
circle k
7-11
Dunkin donuts
Rite aid
CVS

You can use Apple Pay through the Target app.

Great. This is Google Wallet vs US carriers scenario all over again. I started using Google Wallet in 2012, then AT&T blocked it (along with Verizon and TMo ) in favor of their own crappy system that wasn't going to be functional until 2014! Had to root my S3 and alter some code to get Google Wallet functioning (ironically paid with it at CVS for over a year with it, no problem).

Now, Apple gets in the game and the retailers think they will win over customers by forcing them to use their system instead of Apple Pay or Google Wallet? Doubtful. All I know is, I won't use CVS any more. Walgreen's it is.

It was always comes down to money.

I'm sure this is a negotiating tactic to get some sort of cut from Apple or Google and be eventually sorted out. How long that takes is anyone's guess.

Or the credit card companies or banks can just say they won't process anything going through those stores till they get NFC going and then those stores will really be in trouble. Anyone can play hardball. Wait till everyone has to pay cash and see how they'll like that!

So does that mean you won't be shopping or eating at places that doesn't accept NFC payments from now? its impossible to avoid traditional POS. This is nothing different.. CVS was just more vocal through actions on this. Other retailers opted out silently behind the scenes... are you now gonna boycott every store that chose not to use apple pay?

1st world problems I guess.

No, I'm going to boycott stores that HAVE the technology available already in their stores and are disabling it to attempt to force consumers to give up their checking account numbers and let all their purchases be tracked.

Unfortunately for the US insecure magnetic payments are still the widespread norm and we're stuck with them for the time being. There are more and more merchants who are starting to adopt new technologies like EMV and NFC, but I understand every store won't have this right away.

However, when there is a store that has the technology already and has been using it then actively makes a decision to prevent me from using the more secure payment method, they're saying they don't care about my payment security, so I'll shop elsewhere.

I think a LOT of people could maybe read the book of Revelation, and see what they make of "The mark of the beast" and how a unified payment system correlates to what was foretold, and now the signs are coming to pass.

Only the spiritually blind could not see these signs.

I hope a bunch of people, upon learning that CVS is doing this, walk away from a register counter full of would-be purchases.

I hope that many of them will be buying ice cream.

Great, even more needless conflict in the world. Taking something offline that works, sounds like it is an insider deal padding the pockets of some team seeking power over something they have no business interfering with.

Loved using google wallet at CVS, I won't wait until 2015 to continue NFC payments, I will buy my snacks, batteries, print my photos, and do other such shopong at places like target and Walgreen's.

Sent a longer version of the same to CVS, they lost a previously happy customer.

There is no learning curve. It's point and shoot.

You're wrong. I've seen people at stores take a long time to check out while fumbling with their new checkout method

False analogy. It does not apply to banning NFC, when you can still use credit cards though at the same store.

Oh stop already. Keep moving the goalpost - I'm not playing the game.

Excuse me, spoiled brat?..... because I see the dangers of MCX and I refuse to my banking information in the hand of hackers? all because I am not smart enough to "trust" someone else to guard the "cloud".. This has the Fappening 2.0 written all over without the naked pictures..

No one is forcing you to use MCX. Problem solved.
