syncing is an essential feature which makes free tier pointless IMO.

i don't mind paying $36 or even $70 for this software every year. this app is really well done. but i'm already juggling 50+ subscriptions and prefer to pay for software on my own time. this is especially true for apps that can totally use Apple's CloudKit instead of paying for their own servers (this also applies to Bear notes).
Wow. 50 subscriptions. If that’s not a warning for the rest of us, I don’t know what is.

I have two subscriptions. And at least one of those will be expunged when my extended Apple TV+ freebie expires next month. Yay, no dumb arcade or Apple Music for me. I’ve got plenty of music. Wifey pays for Netflix. It’s a sub-free life for me!

By "that crap" you mean creating, maintaining, supporting, and releasing new features for a great product?

Yeah, who would support such a thing??
I’m happy to support it by paying for it once, as has been the standard model for purchasing software—and most other transactions in which one obtains ownership of a discrete, standalone product.

If the developer releases a newer version of the product, I might consider buying it too—once. To force a subscription denies me that choice of which upgrades are actually worth money and which ones aren’t.

Software developers have done very well by the fairer pricing model for years. Many still continue to do so. The subware pricing model has nothing to do with sustainability, and everything to do with greed. And that is what I, and many others in this community, refuse to support.

Now I'm journalling on Notes. It's not perfect and it's not pretty but it will be with me as long as I use iPhone. Apple should make a journaling app (iPad is a perfect platform for journalling - with or without Pencil), but then again they might get sued for it.
Out of curiosity, how do you organize your journal entries with all the other notes, do you start a new note for each entry? I’ve been using Notes for some time now, however, I only have a note where I keep adding entries (with their dates) on the same note.

Congrats to the D1-Team, with almost 11.000 journal entries dating back to 2010 I hope that the App will stay alive, independent, safe and developes in the right direction. Always a bit frightening when a subscription app needs an acquisition to survive. Despite some glitches and ideas that never quite panned out like the printed journals or online-publishing, the core app is the finest digital journaling app there is.
This is the positivity we need.
Sure it might be concerning, but at least it looks like they’re keeping staff so maybe it will stay the same and/or be enhanced.

Love the app. Understand how devs want/need to make $ with subscriptions. I much prefer paying once and upgrading down the line, but it is what it is.
Good for the D1 staff. I hope they made some good retirement money from the deal.
I’m exciting for its figure and will keep using it.

You can start a new note for each entry with "Create a new note with the current date as its title" shortcut but I just manually create it and use each note for a day. I rarely edit it so it works well.

One thing I do like about Day One are the reminders of "you have an entry from four years ago" and it was a great pic from a ski trip, or Disneyland, etc. It's made for some nice memory reminders. At one point I was going to quit Day One because of the subscription, and exported all my data, but I realized that the $30-ish a year it costs for me to keep those memories as happy little reminders is worth it as long as I'm still actively using the service. Shoot - I pay twice that for a new release video game and barely blink an eye.

I hope things don't change too much. Although a WordPress plugin to publish to web might actually get me to use my vanity domain again. :D

Hopefully they can rescue it. I stopped using it when they turned to a ridiculous subscription model where you needed to pay monthly to use something as basic as the Notes app.

I’m glad to see so many people see Dat One and their immediate response is distaste. Well earned.

For anyone considering the app go look at DEVONthink. Far more flexible with many more features. No subscription and a support team that replies faster than any software I’ve ever seen.

As someone who only uses Day One, not sure what to think about this other than Day One is an app I've used for many many many years. I don't like the idea of my data (encrypted or not) being on yet another cloud service... but Day One has done it really well. I've got 2,554 entries, 3,177 photos, 19 videos, etc... About 7GB+. I can't wait for the day they integrate Photos app into Day One so I don't have to duplicate photos...

While I don't use Wordpress - the part that makes it so I don't worry is that Paul will continue to run the company (for now) with the staff.

Great app! I can't say enough good about it. I've used this every day for years and years. Works beautifully. Love reading entries in X years prior on the day I'm doing my entry. Finding data is easy as well.

All I hope for is that at least now they give some real love to the Mac app and listen to customer feedback regarding obvious issues. It does not look nearly as polished as the iOS one. Something so small as creating an entry with a template needs to be done using the menu bar (with a separate option!) and still hasn’t been integrated into the + button at the far right corner.

I just hope the software now gets out of the slumber the subscription model afforded it.

I emailed the developer a year ago about the sync icon on the Mac being too small and some other things that do not remain clear in light mode. No response. None. So I can only hope that now the developer team works on the Mac app like they should have.

There's no versioning for notes. Be careful or get OneNote.

I used to love this app. Till they started adding too many 'features' - ended up ruining the simplicity and usability. Too many apps go down this route of trying to include the kitchen sink - if for no other reason they need to justify their subscription pricing model. Just keep it simple. Now I have a few Day One databases I need to figure out how to get the writing out of. I'm surprised this app managed to survive so long. Irrelevant for most.

Not a fan of subscription model either. I like just to pay for an app once and be done with it.

But...have to admit I do like Day One's features. For what I do, it has been great for me. Hope nothing changes for the worst after the acquisition.

Hi, What did you do with your DayOne data? Did you move them to Notes? Also, do you password protect per Note?

This was one of my favorite apps right up until they removed the ability to sync to Dropbox. I’ve still got the old version with Dropbox sync and no subscription but I do miss all the new features/enhancements that come out.

Would love for Automattic to bring back the iCloud/Dropbox sync!

Feels like eventually, everyone is going to flee back to Apple's stock apps as every other app they know goes subscription. 😕
