So they obviously have a problem with the manufacturing/ quality of this product. Unfortunate for a new and pricey accessory.

It’s quite normal if this is a quality control problem. Few product defect doesn’t make the whole product line a failure.
And what’s important is Apple willing to replace this defected products.

I fear that the same thing will soon happen to my keyboard as I start to leave the house more with the iPad. While I don’t expect the durability of an aluminum MacBook I do expect it to be higher quality than my 1990 Trapper Keeper from school.

Question... is this ”defect” a manufacturing issue or a design issue? Is the covering too thin for the metal/plastic substructure?

Good question but either way it is a problem.

You can tell it’s a fragile product. The softish plastic with sharp corners would probably fray if even scraped along a painted drywall with minimal force. A drop would probably result in significant scuffs.

Im getting a soft iPad sleeve for when I place it in my backpack as I’m sure the texture of the pack would also eventually scuff the MK.

When I back pack it, I use a 10 year old Waterfield sleeve from my long retired 11” MBA. Its a snug fit and seems almost perfect.

You will not find these for sale anymore.

A quick update on this thread:

5 Months later, this replacement Magic Keyboard is like brand new. That problem is not there.

This leads me to believe that that was a defect unique to that one keyboard.

I treat it the same as I treated that one. With absolute care.

Thanks for the update. I’m curious on where and how you use your keyboard? Is it mostly at home? Do you throw it in a bag or backpack often?

Mine doesn’t go anywhere, yet. I have a decal over mine, from decalgirl.com (amazing btw) so it looks new. But the corners are of course not protected and that’s the spot I am worried would get frayed sticking it in a backpack.

I go to my local coffee shop a lot to do work, and my iPad is always going in and out of my backpack. No damage. I would still be careful, just don’t jam it into your backpack.

I have a dbrand skin on mine, so everything is protected but the edges, likewise to yours. I think it’s fine, as long as you be careful.

Waterfield will make a case to fit your new iPad Pro. No problem. I just bought one that holds my 2020 12.9 and Magic Keyboard. Every sleeve I've ordered from them is a nice snug fit.

Oh looks great that seems to do its job. Hope to find something like this for my 11-inch magic keyboard. I had issues on the edges now after 6 months of use and could be placing it in the backpack caused this.
