I never wanted/needed one until the iPad 2 came out. I bought it thinking I had a few weeks to mess around with it and if I didn't like it, I would return it.

A year later, it is positively frightening how much I love this thing more every day. It follows me everywhere I go :)

Thanks for your delightful love letter... reading it began my day with a smile!

Excellent read OP. I shared similar feelings with you about the iPad. I never really saw the point of having a tablet. I had my tower and I had my laptop so I thought I had everything covered. To be honest i was a bit of iPad hater (and apple products in general). I hadnt touched an iPad once since it had been released until about a month ago.
I broke down and decided to see what all the commotion was about. I went to my local apple store and just tried one out.
I was in love as soon as i picked it up. Now Im a bit of nervous wreck because i want to buy one and have it NOW lol, but with all this talk of three coming very soon, I cant bring myself to sling out that much money for a older model. I figure if this will be my first I better get the best one available because ill need to keep it for a bit.
I even eventually plan on swapping the android for the next iPhone released... The integration between apple products sounds amazing. But most of all im switching becaue of THIS
Android requires you to devote hours and hours to following "devs" and their threads in order to get the most from your device. Apple does all that FOR us and THEN sells us a product!

Matt

I'm looking forward to my new toys in the future :D

..just jumping in on the conversation here but can someone please explain to me why apple doesn't put a USB connection or an SD slot on the iPad???.

My guess is adding an SD slot will make the iPad thicker, and we all know how Apple loves to make devices as thin as possible As for USB connection, iPads do transfer data through USB in a way, you just have to go through iTunes. But so many apps now provide ways to transfer files over wifi, I hardly use the USB anymore. It's so much more convenient not having to dig up a cable, walk over to the computer and hook up. Like right now, I'm in the bed room, and my computer is in the living room. Using an app called FileBrowser, I can hook up to my computer, browse its hard drive, and transfer files to the iPad without getting up. Much better than USB cable!

I don't think I've connected my iPad to the computer since iOS 5 came out.

As far as SD/USB, there is an adapter for use with cameras, but AFAIK you can't use it for general file access. There's no concept of file system access in iOS so it wouldn't make sense to put USB or SD slots on it for general use.

Well dont you sound like a delight... furious at £500 gift.

I think we all know where this relationship is heading... Poor guy

I shouldn't dignify this with a response, but...

Dude, I'd be furious if my husband bought me an extremely expensive gift without checking that it was something I wanted first. If you're trying to plan a future together, both people should be in on most buying decisions of that scale (unless you're very wealthy). And having spent much of our relationship long distance, I know how it feels to choose between a plane ticket and some other luxury.

I'm glad the OP did decide the iPad is worth it, but just because someone spends a lot of money on something doesn't mean you're obligated to fall all over yourself with appreciation if the gift was expensive but thoughtless. (In this case, it sounds like her boyfriend did correctly figure out that the iPad was a good match for her - if he'd instead spent that money on, say, a musical instrument she had no interest in learning would you still defend him?)

This. We've been together for six years and since it's a very serious relationship, I've got a financial stake in our future. So when we're scraping money together to pay bills, I prefer to spend the money wisely. I don't think he spent more than a couple hundred all in, but if he had shown up with a $700 violin when what I really need is to pay the heating...

What ended up happening, however, is that he knew me better than I knew myself. His reasoning was that it would make work much easier and he was absolutely right. Let's not get it twisted--my point was that I was unfairly ungrateful and first because I didn't understand. He works with iPads every day, he knew I'd love it in the end. No worries gentleman, he was...thanked ;)

I've played with the iPad at the Apple store and it seems pretty cool but I can't imagine it replacing a notebook...way too limiting especially with the complete lack of connectivity to storage media.

To answer your question about the USB port and SD reader, it's because apple is much too proprietary. (please excuse me for blasphemy, but it's true :D)

Regarding the OP, that was definitely a great read and I'm glad it's turned out so well. :):apple:

OP, 2 things...

1/ Bristol? - urghh, good luck!

2/ On your iPad, go to BBC.co.uk and look at all those video stories and features, now imagine having a tablet that can actually watch them all.

...you aren't holding it......

...you aren't holding it......
True, but there's either an App for that, or there will be. And it will be far more 'efficient' than burning up battery life on flash. :)

As for the SD Card, USB, etc. limitations - one word for you - dropbox. Done with that, and the whole CD drive thing - dead as the cassette tape.

I wouldn't go so far as to call the iPad "magical" - but it's pretty close, mainly because you can start to visualize a day where a "PC" is no longer needed at home and for the vast majority of people. And THAT is why it's a game changer IMHO.

1) What's that supposed to mean? I've been here for years...

2) Wow, one website that I don't care about that I can't watch. Not bothered. Not to mention the BBC News AND iPlayer apps...now you just kind of sound like a champion under informed troll.

Dropbox is fantastic; so far I've been using that and iDisk storage to access things. No problems thus far. Certainly not magical but it's an aesthetic experience unmatched by other manufacturers.

Hehe, I'm in a similar situation. Long distance relationship with a guy from the US. :)

I'm very glad you're enjoying your iPad. While I don't assume that an iPad will be useful for everyone there's two things in your situation that the iPad is just infinitely useful for: PDFs and traveling. Those were the first two reasons that made me want one when they came out. :)

I have to read a lot of articles as part of my job and I couldnt agree with you more. This may have been one of the most valuable purchases I've made in a long time.

Maybe if you actually went on the BBC website on an iPad you would see that the BBC has made all videos HTML (like most websites, or if there is still flash in there you can just use iSwifter app). And they also have an app so your point is completely irellivent.

Road tested it today flying back to the UK. I've been reading PDFs and using Pages all day (interspersed with the occasional game of course) and I'm sitting pretty at 64%. I don't think I could ever go back lol.

I am really glad you are happy with it. Now, only a few more weeks till the IPad 3 will be available...:)

Haha believe me I'm already discussing how much I think I can get for this v. iPad 3 cost...

Come to think of it, neither have I...Only require docking when the IOS upgrade hits the servers. Same goes for my phone. I will have to connect my old 4 today to upgrade to IOS 5 and the erase my content prior to sale. Having said that, wifi doesn't work well for everyone. I guess the absence of a SD or USB port won't be a deal breaker for me either.

BBC is currently in the process of moving all their videos to HTML5.

Oh and that was way off-topic.

I felt the same way as the OP when the iPad was first announced. Like many people, I dismissed it as simply a "big iPod touch". But it's soooo much more. :p

I stopped reading after that. The fact that someone could be furious about a 500 dollar gift for a holiday as lame as valentines day is unbelievably obnoxious.

Why go to a web address when you can go to the apps (BBC News, BBC iPlayer)

And I see you're having a belated dig at flash so i'm assuming you haven't seen any news articles about Adobe stopping support and development on Mobile flash right?? Oh and just for your records Android have released Chrome browser that doesn't support flash.

There was/is a very good reason Apple don't allow it.

Seriously? Then too bad. If you'd read the entire thread, you'd have come upon the OP''s explanation of why she was initially upset. Although, even without the later clarification, the reason was kind of implicit in the OP, too. You shouldn't judge something unless you've read the whole thing.
