Not a smoker anymore, quit way back in 1999.

$1400 - Wow, that's crazy, basically the base price of a NEW Mac..glad it worked out. I'm glad I did get the AppleCare. My friend said "warranties" are crap, useless..just an item to get your money - "Don't bother getting AppleCare". But there was no way I was buying a pricy item like this without coverage.

I just do hope they wont give me a hard time - claim "environment issues" and they won't cover it. That would be a load of BS.

Wish Apple would acknowledge this LCD, overheating issue, whatever the flaw is and fix it. I'll see what happens..

Well I'll be honest about one thing, I was about to go and and plunk down about $2200 +/- for a 27" i7 iMac. I figured it would be best to check in here and see what the latest buzz has been about them.

Now I am not so ready to go and plunk down all that $$$$$$.

I know my Apple Care is up on this old 24" unit ... but so long as it is doing its job, albeit a bit slow at times, the urgency to buy is gone!

I hope it works out for your issue.

Same here Aswell :(

I Have 2 iMacs and both of them have this very problem, 1 is less than 8 months old. 1 is used in the living room & the other is in an office but both are affected.

I signed this petition :

It's dust getting in between the LCD & Backlighting - Not Sealed Well :(

I think apple need to come clean about this Defect and offer there customers new screens until they cure it for good as anybody trying to sell there old machine has to take less than it's worth.

VERY BAD APPLE !

RE: Dark Spots

It has been well over a year since I first posted about the dark spots. I did bring this to the Apple store outside Philadelphia. LCD screen was replaced, resealed. Apple (also AppleCare) did take care of this "known issue" - according to one of the employees - Invoice stated this could have been $800+ dollars!

Dropped off on 12/15/10, I picked it up on Dec 20th. It was a minor inconvenience..only 5 days without the computer, a good turnaround. Probably the biggest hassle about this, was dealing with insane Holiday traffic, shoppers.

I am now heading into Feb 2012, I haven't had an issue since.
**Knock on wood**

I strongly recommend getting the AppleCare no matter what, it definitely paid off. BUT still the key here is, it is a "known issue." with older Macs. perhaps newer ones as well.

I've had this problem before and continue having the problem.

I first noticed these dark spots maybe in the summer of 2010. I brought it to a local reseller, they didn't ask too many questions, just replaced the LCD. I think it was about 2-3 days turn around time.

Then late last year, I started noticing the issue again. My warranty isn't up until November this year so I might bring it in again this summer. I do play games but I don't do it heavily. I don't do any video/photo editting.

So just a caution, you may see the problem again even if you get it fixed.
