Well done to Mr. Becks. And he can even take his Spanish lessons with him.

Let's face it. If someone telephoned and offered you that amount out of the blue, you would be at the airport before they even finished the call.

Your right, I'd play for the best side on mersey-side for that amount of money... Yes, I'd play for Accrington Stanley any day for £128 Mill

He is being vastly overpaid, to be sure. It might turn out to be a costly mistake for US Soccer.I hope not.

The real irony would be if he gets a lot of media attention and ends up hating California.

The article does say "reportedly" worth £128 million, and it can't believe it's anywhere near that in terms of salary. American soccer players make very little money (relatively speaking) simply because Americans don't watch soccer. Soccer is only like the sixth or seventh most popular spectator sport in America, after football (American), baseball, basketball, hockey, and golf. Not sure how it stacks up against tennis, however (and I don't count NASCAR racing!).

I'm not saying this to attack the sport itself, but I have never seen a professional soccer game broadcast by any major network (not including Olympics). I suppose this probably varies state to state, but I do have a pro team in my state and they get less publicity than non-collegiate sports do.

lol £128 million for a has been... I don't like the man, but David Beckham has it sussed. Earn all that to play out the last few years of his career in a (Sorry, but its true... and you know it) piss poor league but in America. Good move for him.

While it's not up to the top European leagues, I wouldn't call it piss poor. Let's put it this way, MLS is a hundred times better than England's attempts to play, well, almost any other sport except soccer.

Having said that, US soccer has a tough challenge ahead of it even with Beckham plugging it. The soccer-loving countries of the world don't have nearly as many competing superstar sports as the US does. American football, baseball, basketball, NASCAR (like it or not) and even hockey still all have more TV exposure, star power, and stronger fan support than soccer here. (And this even though the NHL practically committed suicide a couple years ago.) It would be like trying to grow a pro baseball league in the UK. Pretty slow going.

And I say this as a soccer fan, who's been to Galaxy games, watches games on TV, and has spent entirely too much time wondering how long Robbie Keane's injury is going to hurt Tottenham.

In Socal MLS games are televised on Fox Sports Net, and the ESPN channels have shown quite a few games over the years. But then, soccer is a lot bigger here than in most of the US, if only because of all the Latino immigrants. I mean, a couple years ago we got a second LA team named after a Mexican team.

Accrington Stanley – who are they?! ;)

I'd play for anyone for circa £500,000 a week – to hell with it, I'd even play for Sc*nthorpe. Still, I hope it goes well for him. If people are daft enough to pay wages as high as they do, you can't blame him for snapping their hand off. And if winding down your career playing in the States is good enough for the likes of Messrs Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Moore and Pele then I'm sure it's more than good enough for Beckham.

I suppose though that's the last nail in the coffin of his international career...

Religious Conversion

How long before the Bekhams become Scientologists? I figure, they will make the move when the initial popularity fades because Scientology alone will get them in the press at least once a week.

Exxacctly ;)
Just drink your milk up, there's a good lad. :p

On the subject of TV, it wouldn't surprise me if a British broadcaster snaps up the rights to show MLS matches over the next week or two – Channel Five or one of the sateliite channels. :D

AFAIK, Fox Sports Net and Sky are both divisions of News Corp. Premiership games are shown here on Fox Soccer Channel. It wouldn't surprise me if Murdoch's people already had an inside track on MLS rights.

I wonder if this is the start of something bigger though. I'll assume that Beckham won't instantly be the best player in MLS, but he'll be uber-wealthy, fewer papparazzi, a bigger fish in a smaller pond. If he's reasonably good and lights up the highlights a few teams, then other past-their-prime stars might consider a similar move. I know there has been gossip linking MLS to Ronaldo and Figo. Put it this way, how many other footballers have wannabe-actress wives/girlfriends?

He just wants to play in an inferior league so he can kick ass on the pitch once again.

I wouldn't, knowing full well that I'm going to get paid a LOT of money no matter who I play for. If I were him, I'd also be rich already, so the extra money coming out of LA wouldn't be a big deal.

The amount of hostility from the UK about this is hilarious to me. You built him up, tore him down, and then wonder why he'd want to go elsewhere. Since he can't win no matter what he does, he might as well go where they'll pay him a lot and he's a big fish in a small pond.

Then where would Bolton get all their players from?

Anyway, the Beckham Effect is already taking hold. Apparently, Toronto FC have been inundated with requests for tickets for their upcoming game against LA Galaxy – even before the fixture list has been announced.

Pretty good for a team that hasn't played a game yet.

The MLS season runs from April to November and he wouldn't join the team until August. Each team plays the other conference twice at home, twice on the road, so there might be only one Toronto vs. LA game in the last few months.
