theory? it came straight from apple. no need to test.

Straight from Apple: "Get directions to wherever from wherever. View turn-by-turn directions or watch your progress with live GPS tracking."

Is it live GPS tracking or delayed GPS tracking. Nothing I've read says that the iPhones tracking is delayed...

If the tracking is live and knows where you are at any given second, then someone can write a live voice-assisted turn-by-turn application.

Also, if the iPhone’s GPS antenna is much too small to emulate the turn-by-turn navigation then it's much too small to provide live GPS tracking.

I don't see this as an issue but only time will tell.

One thing I hope they have either as a 3rd party app or a software update.. I would like to see how fast one is going! lol I loved it on the Blackberry.. but miss it now :(

Mossberg wouldn't bite about GPS in the iPhone - he said to ask Pogue about the GPS problems that Pogue had. I'll see if he'll give away any more than that. I'm not sure if Pogue will respond either. Till then, other reviews = it isn't the hardest thing in the world to test.

are you one of those people who still think there is a front facing camera on the phone, despite those who actually used it say no front camera?

read the entire thread, i already addressed it:

"yeah, turn by turn via visual text directions and watch your progress as a blue dot like Jobs showed at WWDC. the marketing verbiage is misleading, just like the slogan "half the price, twice as fast" they keep using."

you can say what you want......but it came straight from apple about the gps.

Here's my take on the GPS situation--
I believe the writer is mistaken. The GPS is capable of turn by turn directions. The software (Google Maps) is not. Google maps can give you turn by turn directions in a list, but it wont display and tell you the next turn as you come up to it. Instead, you have to watch your dot move along the purple route line to see when to turn, or just read the directions in advance. This is the case on the Google Maps software on Windows Mobile devices, so it probably applies here as well.

Sophisticated GPS software similar to that available on a dedicated GPS device should be able to be ported to iPhone (as TomTom announced they did), the problem is getting Apple to approve it for the App Store. There is some confusion over Apple's SDK rules on whether or not it will permit applications to give real time route guidance--does that mean Apps cant use Google Maps for that purpose (liability reasons?), or does it mean all apps are prohibited. We will have to wait and see...some developer or company is bound to try and submit a GPS driving application to the App Store.

have you contacted them?

i dont care if it does it without voice, thats fine by me, turn by turn live via visual text :)

Care to show us that web page from Apple or the document? It would help this discussion immensely...

Not all of us were expecting that. I have a real GPS; I didn't expect the iPhone to do much, and would never try to use it for real GPS considering the impact it would have on battery life to keep that screen lit for an extended period of while to actually using it for navigation (assuming it's not plugged into a car cord). I hope there's a way to just turn off the GPS to save battery.

Steve said in the keynote (or some other video I've seen online) that the GPS module stays off until you launch Google Maps and try to get your location. i.e., it only turns it on when it's needed, otherwise it's off.

Yes. Mossberg just said to ask Pogue about his problems. To be honest, Mossberg has like 5 words on the GPS - no idea how much he actually tested that feature - he seemed to be more about 3G battery usage, call quality, and the APp store for example.

Edit: Mossberg didn't actually test the iPhone 3G in a car. His words (as it doesn't have the software to fully emulate a dedicated in-car device). Guess that leaves waiting for a reply from Pogue hehe.

i agree, but you and I both know, i don't have it.

however, if the gentleman who wrote the review, who had a working version of the 3G, made a claim/quote about gps from apple in his article...and it turned out to be false, wouldn't that be construed partly as slander....and apple could sue?

I trust the reviewer more than i trust you....nothing personal my friend.

No offence taken. I just find it strange that the reviewer mentions it offhandedly, without giving any more detail -

"According to Apple, the iPhone’s G.P.S. antenna is much too small to emulate the turn-by-turn navigation of a G.P.S. unit for a vehicle, for example."

Who's the source at Apple? Why didn't Mossberg mention this? Did Apple tell al the reviewers?

Just seems a little strange. Is probably legitimate.

Yes, that's what Apple says. There are turn by turn directions. They are text-based, they require manually advancing each step, they are not audible and they are the same as the 1st generation iPhone's directions.

And yes, you can watch your progress as a blue dot.

My point is: If you can watch your progress with live GPS tracking, then there is no deficiency in the GPS antenna. All that needs to happen is Apple or Tom Tom or whoever take that tracking information and as you approach the intersection give you verbal directions and step forward to the next direction. It's a lack of software - remember Google doesn't allow using it's maps for live turn-by-turn directions. Therefore someone will need to create an application with the live turn by turn features and include maps stored onboard, otherwise you have no maps when out of coverage.

From USA Today:
I was pretty impressed by the accuracy on the new device as I drove along in my car, searched for nearby pizza places, and requested directions.

Alas, the feature begs for the audible turn-by-turn directions found on Samsung's Instinct and others. (Again, I'm hoping a third-party developer will fill the void.)

And for those who keep throwing out the half price complaint, do you realize just how illogical you are? Let see, iPhone 3G at half price: Device $199, Voice: $20, Data and Text: $10 - obviously that wasn't going to happen, so why are you including AT&T's pricing with Apple's?

Apple can influence the cost of the phone and they got it down to half price under certain conditions. The rest is up to AT&T and has nothing to do with Apple.

thinking about it a bit more, it appears to be a pretty good strategy apple/att have going on to mislead the public.

it begins with hyping up a feature or features of the new phone (in this case the GPS). how you can track your movement and get turn/by/turn. when the truth is, you track your movement by a blue dot and READ the turn/by/turn. So this misleads the average consumer to believe the iphone gps is going to be like a TOM-TOM version and get's them to commit to buying the iphone.

then you got the misleading sales tag "twice as fast. half the price". this sort of misleads the consumer to think the cost of the phone went way down and now they're even more convinced to get the iphone. only though, to find out later in the sales process or after they tally their bills for the entire life of the phone that it cost MORE.

i'm a little upset about all the misleading. really, let's say it like it is Apple....you just want to suck people into a 2 year contract and the real profits will come from an App Store....while providing really, not much value to the 3G refresh.

oh well, since i didn't get the first iphone, i'll get this one regardless.

we would like ...

Why do so many people on this site assume they are speaking for everyone on the site, and start their statements with "we want", "we think", and my favorite, "Do we know yet", etc?

I'd agree - put the iPhone onto a charging dock in the car, and put the route you want in. Presumably Google Maps can both show a blue dot and also the route at the same time. As long as the route is simple, you should be ok. Worst comes to the worst, you pull over, and just check over the route. If you're not driving alone, you could get the passenger to tell you whilst driving. They could just have an audio beep to tell you a turn is coming up, then flash the text in larger writing up. Plenty of software solutions for this. You could precache the route map data also - isn't like Google hasn't looked at offline apps...

why do you assume that i assume i am speaking for everyone on the site? my post began with "we would like" because someone has not understood a number of posts from a number of different members about directions; i merely offered a explanation of those posts to be helpful.

Engadget said Pouge's comment about the GPS chip in the iphone being too small for turn by turn made zero sense. I trust Engadget over any of those reviewers any day...Plus Tom Tom already publicly announced they had developed turn by turn software for the iphone, but were awaiting approval from Apple before releasing it.

Like other people have said, if the GPS gives you live location, than it can give you turn by turn.
Turn-by-turn has NOTHING to do with the GPS itself, it's all software based.

Sounds like Pogue just took the "no turn-by-turn" part of the Google Maps terms and distorted it into what he wanted to believe.
