Thanks for the great second impressions post. I got my hands on one today. I will just say to those who haven't had a chance yet that it was (to me) a vastly more persuasive piece of hardware in person than I would have guessed. I was having serious second thoughts (doubts, really) and was prepared to sit this round out. I am back to thinking that I will buy one of these.

Yes, the lack of palm/wrist area on my 11" was something I had to get used to. On the 12" it's the same issue.

This was a big issue for me with the 11" Air and something I love about the 13" rMBP.

But yeah, everyone seems impressed with the speakers. Even reviews from places like Engadget and ArsTechnica noted this. I love that, because like you I'll be watching tons of movies on this thing.

I haven't been able to get to an Apple store yet, unfortunately.

Re: photo: Wow, that's kinda ugly. Is it really that dark? Now I'm wishing I ordered the silver one. Thanks for the photo regardless.

You are going to be very happy, I think. Far more impressive in person than in videos or pics.

Oh. That looks even better than the Apple site images. So stealthy.

Space Gray looks better than the Apple images and Gold looks worse.

Gonna stick with my Gold order though. It's not that serious. Oh and the trackpad doesn't even make sense. That thing is AWESOME. Keyboard, however, meehhhh.

I didn't like the SG in the pics and I certainly didn't like it in person. Its too dark, the keys blend in too much IMO but I love the way the black keys stand out on the gold. Glad I got the gold, its more of a copper look, not really GOLD.

Haha, you dislike it for the reasons I like it. I don't think the keys blend in that much, I just think it's a very uniform look. It looks stealthy and sleek. Gold, much like the iPhones, really only stuns in certain lighting conditions. It didn't show great in the Apple Store to me.

That's exactly what I like about the space gray.

You've got to bear in mind the lighting conditions in the photo. I'm sure the Space Gray is not really that dark - unless Apple's own website is completely wrong. I keep seeing very conflicting images regarding the gold too.

The photo is accurate. I was there, I took it. It's very dark at certain angles, damn near black.

Space Gray is not that dark at all, I just saw it earlier today, bad lighting.

This is ridiculous. That's the whole point. You look at a gold iPhone at the right angle and it looks silver. You turn it away and it's bronze/gold. You tilt that space gray unit like I did in the photo and that's how it appears. The darkness of the paint job is kind of irrelevant, it's about how it appears to the eye. That's an accurate depiction of what I saw.

Here's another shot.

Yea, thats an accurate representation. The last pic you posted where its a charcoal color is not what it looks like really.

My only real takeaway was "Why the hell didn't I trust my gut and buy the Space Gray one?" WAY BETTER LOOKING THAN GOLD. WOW.

WOW looks guuudddd! Happy with my choice. I was never going to go with silver...again.

It does look black even on Apple's page from this angle:

It can look quite dark, take a look at the Engaget and TechCrunch reviews. They show a good variation in color appearance. Same with the Cnet & Mashable review for the Gold model.

Geez I don't like the way the gold looks on CNET, it looks so brassy and loud. Can't see me sticking with that. :( I really wanted a subtle, muted colour. Anyway I'll wait for it to arrive then decide.

Apple needs to hurry up and get more display units in their stores so at least folks can make a more informed decision!

MacBooks are like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're gonna get. Each of these photos looks different. The nearest Apple Store is 100 miles away. Sigh. I hope I like space gray when it arrives. Too late now. :)

It's darker than I'd like it to be, but I agree that one has to see it live. Online pics, whether the promotional ones from Apple or the ones from real life reviewers, show too much variation. I took a few pictures myself in the store, and none of them came out right. I don't know what they did to it but it sure doesn't like pictures. I found the same phenomenon for the gold one, to a lesser degree.

I think maybe videos would work better.

So again, it's all about the lighting and the angle. I could barely tell it was Gold under the Apple store lighting lol.

Finally Demoed One

I've got one on order. So I thought I'd better see one in person.

Frankly, I'm am wowed this was the base model and I played a 4k you-tube video over and over. It only stuttered once. I don't know if it was the wifi or the CPU. I felt the bottom case and there was a warm spot towards the back in the middle. But it never got hot. I suppose running a full length movie would be a better test.

The screen was fantastic! I was worried whether I'd need to mess with the screen resolution for these old eyes. The native resolution was just fine

Physically, it's small size and thinness, it is impressive too. I kept on picking it up just to feel the lack of weight. The keyboard and track pad gave me no trouble, and I am old school touch typist.

So, the only downsides for some will be the price/performance ratio. If you can deal with that then this new laptop is very compelling IMHO.

I've watched a few videos and the Space Gray is very gray, not dark at all. Still a very nice colour though.
